Once again 5:45 rolled around and my phone went off. I rolled out of bed and pulled my jogging stuff on and headed out. Aiden and Gordon were right there, but they both looked a little ragged.
"You guys ok this morning?"
"Yeah we just stayed up a little later than we thought....just talking."
We were downstairs and outside to another bright morning and we started out and picked up Karl when we passed his dorm. There were a few others out this morning Luckily we were all going in the same direction or there could have been trouble. Aiden kept up with us for three laps and then started to fade. He dropped out when we passed the dorm again. One more lap and we were done and Karl continued on to his his dorm.
Back upstairs showered and changed only to get downstairs and into the cafeteria for breakfast. Soon enough we were all out the door and this morning we all went our seperate ways.
I found the room for the Macro Economics class and went in and found a seat. Nobody that I knew came in but there were a few familiar faces from around the dorm.
9 am and a gentleman walked into the room. He was an older guy with a face like 3 weeks of bad weather.
"Ladies and Gentlemen this is Macro Economics. If everyone is in the right place we shall get started."
90 minutes later I was fairly dazed and headed for the next class which was thankfully just down the hall.
I went in and found a seat. 10:45 and in strolled a white haired gentleman.
"Ladies and gentleman I am Mr Carstairs and this is Historical effects on Business. If this isn't where you belong better skeedaddle."
Attendance was taken and the lecture began. It appeared that this was going to be a history course as it pertained to how it effected business. Both Major and minor historical facts would be covered from WW1 on through to the present.
This 90 minutes wasn't so confusing as the first class,or maybe it was just presented a bit better.
12:15 rolled around and I was out the door with everyone else. I stopped at the student union and grabbed a sandwich and a drink before I headed back to the dorm to wait for Karl to show up so we could go to the gym.
About 45 minutes later there was a knock on my door and it was Karl. We made our way over to the athletic center and got changed. We hit the weight machine and worked our way around the different stations and the stationary bikes as well. I then wandered back to the gymnastics room and the door was open but there was nobody in there. I had brought my bag with me fully intending to come back here.
"You can spot me right Karl?"
"I've done it before. But be damn careful love. I wouldn't want to see you break something again or strain something that ain't fully healed."
"Jeez Karl I've been out of the hospital for what almost 9 months now. If it isn't healed yet it's not going to. But I'll start easy ok?"
I moved over to the parallel bars and was just about to make my mount.
"Excuse me but this room isn't open to the public."
"I have permission from the coach to be here as long as I have a spotter."
"You that Sawyer kid?"
"That would be me. Just trying to work my way back into things a bit as I've been away from it for over a year now."
"Coach led us to believe he was impressed. Impress me."
I mounted the bars and swung through and up to a handstand and worked the bar from there for what I timed in my head as a standard presentation ending with a side somersault dismount. I stumbled a bit on that.
"And you say you've been away from it for over a year?"
"Yep."
"Man you'd never know it to watch you. What was your worst station?"
"You never could nail a good floor exercise Den."
"My memory over there. I had an accident and don't remember anything much before last Christmas."
"If you can get back into shape I bet coach would find a place for you on the team."
"Like I told the coach. I need to rebuild my stamina. Right now I couldn't hit another apparatus if my life depended on it."
"I can understand that. Some of us are having a bit of trouble getting back on target just after the summer. Well I need to get changed for practice. You guys going to hang around?"
"I think I'll hang for a bit Karl. The coach asked me to keep an eye open and see if I could spot anything that needed to be worked on."
"Suit yourself Den,I'm headed for the pool for a bit."
"See you for supper?"
"Give me a yell when you're done."
About 10 minutes later the squad started meandering out into the room. The guy I had corrected the other day came over to me.
"I wanted to thank you for spotting my hands. I've been working the last couple of session on getting them closer together and holding the hand stand is easier."
"You're more than welcome. I'm hanging today to see if I can spot anything else for others."
The coach came into the room.
"Alright guys gather round for a second. This young man over here is the one I was telling you about. Mr Sawyer has full access to the equipment as long as he has a spotter just like the rest of you guys. He is also going to be watching and hopefully will be able to spot things that I haven't. So if he says something to you remember he is only trying to help. Ok you guys know the rotation let's get started after you all stretch out."
Just to be friendly I stretched with the rest of them. I watched all of the guys as much as I could. I did notice one guy who didn't seem to be getting any of his handstands particularly straight. Much as I watched him I couldn't seem to put a finger on what it was,and it didn't matter what piece of apparatus he was working on.
The coach must have seen me watching.
"What do you see Dennis?"
"All of his handstands,no matter what piece he is working on all seem to lean. I can't see anything that he is doing wrong to cause it. It may be some inner ear thing or something."
"I've noticed it before and I can't put anything to it either and I had his ears checked just the other day and they seem to be fine."
"I'll keep watching coach but like I said I can't tell you why."
I did try to watch some of the other guys as well and for the most part they were all in pretty good shape. Yeah there was the usual missed landing but more often than not it was just a matter of more practice.
The one guy was just bothering me though. When the practice was over I went into the showers with them and that was when I saw something that had been hidden by the guys clothing. I walked over to him.
"Excuse me Gary isn't it?"
"Yeah I saw you watching me out there. What advice do you have for me?"
"First of all I want you to do something for me. Stand up straight."
"I am standing straight."
"Come with me for a minute....no don't put your shirt on."
We headed for the coaches office.
"Coach I think I've found the problem. Gary face the wall and stand up straight please."
He did as asked.
"Now am I crazy coach or is his spine ever so slightly curved?"
"Son of a bitch. No wonder I never spotted it. I never bother the guys when they are showering or changing."
"What are guys talking about my spine feels fine."
I noticed an instant print camera on the coaches filing cabinet.
"May I?"
"Yeah he has to see it for himself."
I took the picture and waited for it to develop.
"Ok Gary look at my spine and then look at the picture of yours. It's very slight but it is there."
"Son of a bitch! Now what coach?"
"Now I think you had better see a specialist. That could well require surgery, and I'm really sorry Gary but for your own safety I have to cut you from the squad. I don't know how this is going to affect your scholarship, but your health is far more important."
"You just want my spot on the squad Sawyer!"
"No such a thing. Ask the coach. I told him the other day that I was no where near ready to have a spot on the squad. That I was just trying to get back into it a little bit at a time."
"Gary,I know this has to hurt in more ways than one,but that is exactly what he told me."
"Damn it how am I ever going to afford the next 3 years?"
"I'll see what can be done Gary. I won't abandon you on this."
He stormed out of the office and the guys who were still there knew something was wrong and I got a few glares from it.
I closed the office door.
"Coach,if there is anyway I can help him stay in school,I need to know about it."
"What are you independently wealthy or something?"
"As it so happens yeah and if anything comes of this not a word to anybody please. I feel a little responsible for this."
"That's really nice of you Dennis, but none of this is your fault. Hell you may have saved his life. He missed a catch because of that or a handstand on say the high bar, hell he could have broken his back altogether."
"Yeah well from the looks I was just getting I don't think the rest of the squad sees it that way. I'm thinking I had better lay low for a while."
"They're good guys Dennis. I wouldn't worry about them. I'll explain it to them. Likely they saw it too and didn't know what to make of it either."
"I guess we'll just have to see coach. I'd better get I've got someone waiting on me."
