I quietly opened the back door.
"Hello Jason."
Which earned me a quick look over the shoulder and a very surprised look.
"Dennis.....I had no idea this was your house. I'm almost done here. Just let me finish up and we can talk."
"OK. I'm just going to get out of my work clothes and I'll be back out."
I went inside and quickly changed into some bumming around clothes and made my way back out to the pool. Jason was just packing things up.
"So this is the day job and I'd appreciate it if you didn't say anything to your dad."
"Jace my dad and mother are gone. I own the house."
"Well damn! Listen....Aaron told me how things went down and if you'd rather have somebody else do your servicing I'll square it with my boss."
"No, I'd rather have somebody I know doing it. We can still be friends, but I don't think we'll ever get it on again."
"I think I'd like that,if your fiance isn't put out by it."
"Nope he isn't. He's taking a very wide view of the whole thing. He feels that it was something that had to take place seeing as my memory doesn't show any signs of coming back. He thinks I had to prove to myself what he and I had before the accident was real. The reaction I had the morning after pretty well did that."
"He sounds like a pretty special guy. I'd like to meet him someday."
"Most likely you will over the summer. He lives just over the fence when he isn't away at college."
"So you know how I spend my days, what about you?"
"I'm breaking into the brokerage business. I'm working at Sawyer & Associates right now."
Jason got a look on his face and then looked at his work order.
"If your dad is gone, then doesn't that mean....?"
"Yeah it does and I'd appreciate it if you would keep that to yourself. I'm trying to learn the company from the ground up. I'll be heading for State in the fall for the certification program before I can get my brokers license. Then I'll move into the corner office."
"Well, yeah I can see wanting to know the people that you're working with. If I ever have money at least I know where to go to make the most of it. So, the pool is ready to go and I'll be back in a couple of days to check things. If anything happens be sure to give us a call."
"I will Jason and I'll be waiting to see you when you get that money."
Jason just smiled at me and then went about his business.
"Boyo, there's a man here to see you."
I went back into the house and to the front door and opened it.
"Mr Dennis Sawyer?"
"Who is asking?"
"My name is Oscar Thomas,I'm with the city attorneys office. You are Mr Sawyer?"
"Yes I am."
He handed me an envelope.
"Sir you have just been served. This is a supeona to appear in court for the City vs Mr D. Chambers. The trial will be a week from tomorrow at City Hall, courtroom #2 the Honorable Judge Freeman presiding. You are requested to arrive at 9am. Have a good evening sir."
I took a quick look at my watch and saw that it was still before 5pm. I went in and dialed Mr Jacobs number and told him what had happened.
"Not totally unexpected Mr Sawyer. They will probably just ask you what happened the night of the incident."
"What if they ask me about any past occurrences? Other than the fight we had right around Christmas I don't remember anything."
"When is the trial being held?"
"A week from tomorrow at 9am courteoom 2."
"I'll be there with an affidavit from the hospital and that should be the end of that."
"Thank you Mr Jacobs I'll see you then unless something else comes up."
I then called Peter as I was relatively sure he would be getting a supeona as well.
"Yeah he was just here. Well at least this is going to get taken care of fairly quickly. I'm just glad to see it over with before we head out for college."
"Amen to that. Oh hey the pool has been serviced and it's ready to be used whenever you feel like it."
"Well that sounds good. I'll probably be over during the weekend if the weather holds."
"You know you're welcome anytime Pete."
"Yeah I know but I do have things to do afterall."
"Suit yourself Pete,later."
"Later dude."
SPLASH
"What the hell?"
I ran to the back door and outside to find Bobbie splashing around in the pool.
"What the hell Bobbie?"
"But....I'm always the first one into the pool Den."
"You might at least give a guy a little warning first. You scared the shit out of me."
"Are....are you mad at me Den?"
"Of course not Bobbie just surprised."
"Maybe next time you'll listen to your old dad Bobbie."
"Hi Stan. I didn't see you there."
"That's ok Dennis. You don't think I'd let him go in unsupervised do you?"
"I didn't know what to think Stan."
Stans cellphone began to ring at that point.
"Hey son what.......Slow down. There's a what standing at your door.? Well everybody here is just fine........Standing right in front of me.......hold on I'll ask. Any reason a state highway patrolman should be standing at Karl's dorm room door?"
"Oh hell Karl too? Probably a supeona for when we go to court for Dirk."
"Probably just a supeona son........ Yes......I'm sure Dennis has it covered. Ok we'll see you next Thursday night........ I will."
"I was going to call him to warn him. I just got mine a little bit ago as did Peter. Why do I have the feeling this is going to end up being more trouble than I thought?"
"Because 'Honest Charlie Chambers' doesn't like to loose, especially in public."
