"Yes it is Mr Chambers. You are hereby served with a restraining order requireing you to remain at least 50 yards from this house,Mr Sawyer and his place of business until further notice. Your son has already been served his notice. Now unless you'd like a ride downtown at our expense,I suggest you leave.....NOW!"
I heard a car door slam and a slight squeal of tires as Mr Chambers pulled out. I opened the door. It wasn't Dana standing there but some other officer.
"Looks like it was a good thing I was already on my way here. Mr Sawyer here is your copy if the restraining orders as required by law."
"Thank you officer. Is there anything else I can do for you?"
"Just have a good day sir."
"Same to you officer."
I closed the door and made sure it was locked.
The rest of Saturday and Sunday would pass uneventfully. Monday morning and the regular routine of jogging, breakfast and off to work went without any problems.
I had to take the Benz until the police were done with my car and that got a few raised eyebrows when I drove it onto the company lot.
I went straight to Mr Bellows office and told him what had happened over the weekend and had him check to see if the company had any dealings with the Chambers family. It just so happned that we didn't.
I punched in and went to my new job in Asset Retention. A fancy way of saying the place we kept all of the tangible securities that we held for clients. It was going to be a few weeks here before moving on to some other department. My new boss was Angela Morrisy,a forty something woman with an eye for detail.
"Little late this morning Dennis."
"Sorry Mrs Morrisy. I had a bit of a problem that I had to stop and see Mr Bellows about."
"Nothing...work related I hope?"
"Not in the way you mean, though it may well affect the company in the short run,and there is nothing to be done for it but to ride it out."
"Well there are a few files that have to be verified and logged into the system so you should get to it."
"You bet."
There were reciepts of asset files that I needed to process. Basically and physical shares that had to be registered with the system with all of the client information attached.
There were maybe a dozen or so files to work through and to do each one properly took about a half hour.
I had started the fifth file and was checking the shares and something didn't feel right. The stocks themselves felt funny.
"Angela, could you come over here for a second please?"
"What's got you going Dennis?"
"Is it just me or do these certificate feel wrong?"
I handed her the certificates and she went through them.
"You're right they do feel wrong. Its the paper,it isn't the usual stock that shares are printed on and the embossing is off as well. Good catch Dennis. Let me have the whole file please."
I handed her the whole thing, made a note in the system that everything had been turned over to Angela. She headed off to somewhere else in the building. I didn't give it much more thought at the time and went back to work on the other files.
Lunchtime came and went and I finished recording all of the securities and other assets and had started to pull those items that had been sold off over the day for mailing to their new owners,if they weren't clients.
Angela came to me just before quitting time.
"Dennis, you saved the company a really big headache. Those stocks you brought to my attention were forgeries. If you had logged them into the system we would have been liable for their value."
"Damn there had to be about what $300,000 worth of stock there?"
"Exactly. You get a "that a boy" on your permanent file."
"So what happens now?"
"We charge them back to the seller and then let the clients lawyers hash it out. As well as report the other broker to the FCC and the New York Stock Exchange. That puts all the other trade houses like ours on the alert. Likely that particular companies stock goes on hold until all shares can be verified. We lucked out none of our other clients have any holdings in that company,at least none recorded with us. Keep this up and they'll put you in the apprentice program in no time."
"Actually I didn't put in for it. I'm headed to college this fall so I didn't see the sense in applying for it."
"To bad I think you would be a natural for it. Well finish up what you're working and get on out of here."
"You bet I will."
I was on my way out when I was stopped by Mr Bellows.
"Good eye Dennis. Those were actually pretty good forgeries."
"Just lucky I guess."
"Well let's hope your luck keeps running strong in that case. Good night Dennis."
"Night Mr Bellows."
The drive home was uneventful and when I pulled into the driveway there was a van parked along the far side. It was for a pool service. I pulled into the garage and closed the door and went into the house.
"Mrs Ohanlon, whats with the pool guy?"
"He showed up just a bit ago and said he has a standing contract for pool service and that it was to be made ready for the summer now. I called the lawyers and they verified the contract so I let the boyo go to work."
"Well I suppose it will be nice to have the pool ready to use."
I looked out the window and caught sight of slim blond,a very familiar slim blond.
