Once again apologies for not posting the last two weeks. In case I missed anyone when I sent out the email,I had made arrangments to post while I was on vacation, but the grandson fried his computer. Needless to say I am back home now and I've posted two chapters for you. The archivist may have a fit but that's on me.
Thanks for continuing to read.
Before I left the building,I texted Karl.
"Mission accomplished skin intact."
I got to the mail room and the story was all over the place already.
"Dennis,what the hell man?"
"What the hell what Alan?"
"Bob just frog stepped one of the secrataries out of here and he told me to get the details from you."
I proceeded to tell him,in the broadest terms possible,of the plan that Mr Bellows had,and that he used me because I was new to the company and couldn't possibly have been in on anything. I carefully left out any referenece to my owning the place.
"So major brownie points with the head guy. Guess you'll be going places."
"Don't hold your breath on that one Alan. Hey did they make any promises to you when you were hired that they haven't kept?"
"Nah I'm happy being a cog in the machine, less bullshit that way."
"I heard that. See you tomorrow."
I collected my things and was headed towards my car when I heard a car accelerate heavily. There it was a sedan bearing down on me. I managed to get out of the way and get the license number of the car. I had little doubt in my mind that it would turn out to be Janice's.
I called the police to make a report and waited there for the black and white to arrive. I gave them a full report and the license number. The officer did ask why I thought it might be Janice and I told him about my getting her fired and that they could check with Mr Bellows for confirmation if need be.
Soon enough I was home and was asked how my day went. When I told them all about it,Pete looked at me.
"You just can't live a normal boring life can you?"
"Guess not. That would be so....boring wouldn't it?"
That's what life ended up doing after everything had settled down. January wore on into Febuary and Febuary into March.
Karl came home for spring break and we spent as much time together as we possibly could. Roland contiued to jog with us in the mornings and when Karl went back to college we were up to 4 miles each morning.
Peter went back to work after a couple of weeks. Millie passed her course with flying colors and found herself a job,and she and Pete had moved out to an apartment of their own. Both she and Pete now had their drivers license.
It was found that it was indeed Janice who tried to run me down. I didn't press charges and the last anybody heard Janice had left the state.
Life settled into a routine. Right up until the end of March.
"There's mail for you boyo. Looks like it be from the college."
I found the letter and opened it.
"Looks like I'll be going off to college in the fall Mrs Ohanlon."
"College is it now? And I suppose you won't be needing me around here anymore then?"
"Far from it. The house will still need to be looked after, the mail sorted and what not. Your not going anywhere until you're ready to go Mrs Ohanlon."
Before she could answer there was a pounding on the front door.
"What the hell?"
I went and opened the door and Pete was standing there with a letter in his hand.
"What the hell did you do!?!?"
"Well if I knew what you were talking about I might be able to answer that question."
Pete thrust the letter into my hands.
"Dear Mr Pershing, This is to inform you that your application for State College has been accepted and the awarding of the Clayman Memorial Scholarship will cover all college expenses.
We hope to see you in August. Reporting date is...."
"Well damn what makes you think I had anything to do with this?"
"This has got your fingerprints all over it Dennis. I've never heard of nor did I apply for any Clayman scholarship."
"Don't look at me I don't know where it came from."
I did have a pretty good idea though. Clayman was my mothers maiden name.
"All I know is that we will be freshman together."
I showed him my letter of acceptance.
"Damn, think they can handle the two of us at once?"
"Two hell. Don't forget that Karl will be there as well."
"Oh lordy they just ain't ready."
"So time to start thinking about what you're going to need and get it together."
"It's only March Den."
"And before you know it August will be here. Make the list and get it together gradually. Trying to do it all at once will see you forgetting things that you will need."
"I suppose you're right. Damn Den I never dreamt that I'd be able to make it to college."
"This will teach you not to stop dreaming dude."
"I was saving for a car,but now I think there are other priorities."
"You will be riding with me my friend, at least to get there in August."
"In your car? Get real. It'll never hold all of our stuff."
"Then we take the Benz, otherwise it will just sit there and the tires will dryrot away."
"And that car will make you a target for every sleazeball and mooch on campus."
"Well I'll have you there to keep them away won't I?"
"Nope you'll be on your own for that. I'm going to be to busy making sure I pass my courses."
"Good attitude. What does your mom think of all this?"
"She's more blown away than I am. Good thing she got that job that she did. She can keep the apartment on what she will be making."
"That's good to know. So are we going out and partying tonight?"
"Damn right we are. Where are we going?"
"I don't know. Where do the straight boys hang out?"
"Even though Mannies lost it's liquor license alot of the guys and their girls still hangout over there."
"Than Mannies it will be,if you're not to embarrassed to be seen there with me?"
"The option would be to go to that place Aaron took you and I'm not quite ready for that I don't think."
"Ok as long as you promise me that we're out of there at the first sign of trouble."
"I'm not afraid of a little trouble."
"You should be. That shcolarship could dissappear as easily as it came to be."
"I didn't think of that. Still I reserve the right to play it by ear."
"Fine. Go home get dressed and I'll see you in a couple of hours."
chap36
Supper consummed, showered and changed, I drove over to Pete and his mothers new apartment and Pete was waiting outside for me.
"I guess it'll be this years seniors and last years that didn't go to college over there tonight. That going to bring any problems?"
"Like I should actually remember? I need directions even to get there."
Pete gave himself a head slap and started calling out directions for me. We passed a group of buildings and Pete remarked that it was the high school we had attended. It did nothing for my memory. I was beginning to think that I would have to live without it.
Soon enough we arrived at Mannies and found a place to park. The place looked fairly busy. We headed inside and were able to snag a booth. Some of the faces were familiar from my birthday party, but many were not. A good many of them came over to say hi to Pete and most acknowledged me as an after thought. That was fine as I didn't really know any of them. There were a few who came over to say hi to me and to ask what we were doing there. The good news was spread and the night lightened up considerably.
Pete and I both danced with a few of the girls that were there. The guys didn't seem to mind as they were generally engaged in sports talk or some such. It was along about 10:30 when of all people Dirk walked in.
"Oh hell that's just what I need tonight."
"Den?"
"Dirk,he's a homophobic asshole. Last time I ran into him we got into a fight. Good thing Karl was there or I probably would have killed him. Maybe he won't notice us."
No such luck.
"Well if it isn't the faggot. New boy friend?"
I could feel Pete getting ready to act. I put a hand on his shoulder.
"Scholarship."
He gave me a look that told me he wasn't going to take much lip from Dirk.
"Just s friend Dirk and nothing more. We are celebrating getting accepted to college, something you would know nothing about."
"I don't need no fucking college,I've got a job."
"Yes I'm sure daddy can always find something for you to do around the garage, even if it is only oil changes."
We had caught someones attention by this time.
"Dirk you know you're not welcome in here despite who your daddy is."
"Since when asshole?"
"Since right now moron."
The guy,who made Pete look small, took Dirk by the arm and forceibly removed him from the building.
"I swear Dennis I was about ready to pop him one."
"Which would have gotten us thrown out as well. Dirk isn't worth the aggrevation."
We stayed for another hour or so just hanging out and talking with people. When we finally got back to my car I damn near had a hemmorage.
All four tires were flat the body had been keyed in several places and the headlights smashed. It didn't take much imagination to surmise who did it.
I was on my phone to the police department in a flash. soon enough a black and white pulled up and it would be Dana that stepped out.
"Damn Dennis who did you piss off?"
"I can't prove it but I'd bet good money that it was Dirk Chambers."
"Him again. This is the third report I've taken this week where his name has been mentioned. Guess he's taking the news pretty hard."
"What news?"
"You haven't heard? His father was just diagnosed with brain cancer. There's not much they can do about it,and it appears to be hereditary."
"Which means he's likely to contract it as well. Damn I wouldn't wish that on anybody, not even Dirk."
"Well let me get some pictures and a full statement from you and Pete, which reminds me. On that other matter concerning Pete, there isn't going to be any trial. Higgins confessed to everything. We've had to keep him in solitary. Too many people would like a piece of him. Now if you still wish to press charges against Higgins or the city Peter you have a very strong case to be made. You should be getting offical notification in the mail in the next couple of days. Does anyone else have any pertinent information about this?"
"Yeah I do officer."
It was the bouncer who had thrown Dirk out,and he had a video cassette in hand.
"This should pretty well make the case against Dirk and good riddance. Soon as I heard what happened I went in and pulled this for you officer. It pretty plainly shows Dirk destroying this car."
"Ok Dennis your call. If this tape is as damning as Chuck says do you want to press charges?"
"Damn right I do. I don't care who his father is. He can't be allowed to get away with this kind of shit."
I gave Dana a full report as did Pete and Chuck.
"Are you going to want to take her to the police garage for forensics officer? There should only be mine and Petes prints on her and I know you have our 10 cards already."
"I don't suppose it will hurt to have them if there's any to be had."
"Then take her. I don't want Daddy buying Dirk out of this one regardless of the circumstances."
A taxi ride later Pete and I were at the station to make a formal report and sign a complaint. We were told that the police would get in touch with us when we would be needed.
I was about to call for a taxi home when I noticed my message icon flashing. I didn't even have to look to see who it was. It was well after midnight and there was only one person it could be. I checked and it had been my usual 11 text from Karl. I was about to send him a reply when the phone started ringing and it was Karl.
"Hey lover sorry I missed your call. It's been a hell of a night."
