"You know how much that goes against my grain Mr Jacobs."
"I do Dennis. Nonetheless, that is the best advice I can give you right now until I have more to go on. I would advise your Dean of this new rumor and see what he has in mind to do about it."
"While your investigators are checking, have them see if there is an angle involving Mr Adams as well. There are rumors going around about him as well and the thought occurred to me that somebody might well be playing us against each other."
"That could prove to be interesting. I'll mention it to them. Anything else?"
"Not at the moment Mr Jacobs. If anything does come up you'll be one of the first to know."
"Then try and have at least a decent day."
I hung up the phone and tried to relax. It was only a few minutes later that the phone rang again and it was Stan.
"What now?"
"The rumor is going around here that I'm pushing. I thought you had better have a heads up."
"Yes, I can see where you'd think so. Well, I did talk to Tank yesterday and unless you're actually charged, he doesn't see any problem with you keeping your license."
"Well, there's that at least. Andy have anything yet?"
"Not that he's told me about, but he isn't in just yet either. I hear anything I'll get you the info."
"That's all I can ask for Stan. Keep the home fires burning."
I hung up with Stan and still had a little over an hour before I had to leave for class.
When it came time I headed into class and got through Creative Writing without any hassles. It was then over to the student union and bench time.
Pete showed up today.
"You hanging in Den?"
"So far."
"Anything I can do to help dispel the rumors?"
"Other than just standing up for me I don't think so."
"And I don't suppose you have any idea who is behind it, like Adams maybe?"
"No idea whatsoever, and I'd appreciate it if you didn't speculate like that."
I wasn't about to let anybody know we had agreed not to attack each other. That word got out and we might never find out who was actually behind it all.
"I'm just going to have to ride this out until it either stops or I find out who is behind it."
"And you have no clues or suspicions?"
"Suspicions there are a few, but nothing substantial. Phone calls have been however made."
"So, you've got Dana Pembrose on the case?"
"Actually, no not this time. I've got the lawyers digging. But they only just got the word before I came in for class, so I'm not expecting anything from them today."
"Think this is going to go on all year?"
"I hope not. I'd really like to see this taken care of before we head out to Olivette for our next meet."
"When's that?"
"Not quite a month away."
"Here's hoping. I need to get going Den, later."
"Later."
Soon after that, I was on my way over to the Psych class. Once that was taken care of I headed not to the rec center, but over to the admin building. I walked into the Dean's office.
"Mr Sawyer."
"Mrs Humboldt, if Dean Evans has a few minutes?"
"I'll let him know you're waiting."
It was about 10 minutes before Mrs Humboldt's phone buzzed.
"Yes sir. You may go in Mr Sawyer."
"Thank you."
I opened the door to the office and walked in.
"What's troubling you now Dennis?"
"I'm being accused of pushing to the point that somebody actually came up to me and asked what I had for sale, just like......"
"Just like what Dennis?"
"Just like when Karl and I were being set up to take the blame in high school. Has there been a rise in drug incidents since we got back?"
"There has. You don't think it is the same people do you?"
"Maybe not the same people, as I'm pretty sure those involved have several more years to serve, but the same tactic."
"Have you run into anyone on campus that was related to that mess?"
"Not that I know of. What I came over for was to find out if I should go ahead and refute this rumor, or if you preferred I just leave it alone?"
"You know I would prefer that you leave it alone Dennis, but I won't stop you from defending yourself. Do you have any leads that I might follow up on at this point?"
"I have nothing really to go on, other than the fact I gave Bob Watson the same file I gave you before. He did write a story, but it doesn't appear in this weeks edition of the paper. So I do do have concerns about Mr Hastings and Mr Grandise. Has Mr Adams gotten anything?"
"Not to my knowledge. Have you had any involvement from the local police yet?"
"No, but I do expect them to come asking questions at almost any point."
"I'm sure you're ready for them."
"I believe so. I've taken up enough of your time sir. Have a good evening."
"Be safe Dennis."
I went to my car and headed back to the apartment. I got there ahead of Karl, seeing as I didn't go to practice, and got supper started.
Karl got there around his usual time.
"What are you doing home this early? You didn't hurt yourself did you?"
"I'm fine. Just went to speak to the Dean instead of going to practice. I'll spend some extra time on Saturday."
"So what did you and the Dean talk about today?"
"The newest rumor, that I am pushing and that there was no story in this weeks paper. He'd prefer I not talk about it, but gave me the ok to defend myself anyway."
"So just what are you going to do?"
"Unless directly confronted I plan to keep my mouth shut."
"And when somebody does eventually get in your face?"
"Then I'll respond as calmly as I can."
"Like people are going to believe you just because you say so."
"Some will some won't. Not like there is anything I can do about it. Supper's up in 5."
We ate and then cleaned up. We both hit the books for a bit and eventually crashed for the night.
Friday morning and we were up and at it again. Once we were done with our laps, I noticed a smudge on the quarter panel that hadn't been there before. I decided to check the car over. I got down and even checked the undercarriage. Karl just looked at me as I hadn't done this in a while. I found a package taped to the inside of my wheel well.
"See if you can flag down some campus security Karl."
"What the hell?"
"There's some kind of package taped to the inside of my wheel well. I don't want to touch it just in case."
Karl finally did get one of the security guys.
"What do you think is going on here?"
"If I had to take a guess, somebody has planted some drugs on my car. I don't know who was supposed to find it, but I want it treated as evidence."
"Any ideas who might have planted it?"
"No, but we can sure as hell take a look."
I downloaded the footage for the last hour from the onboard security camera system I had installed before. It showed a male figure in sunglasses and a hoodie, which was drawn tight around his face.
"Not anyone I can identify from this footage, but it does indicate that someone did tamper with the car."
The officer did have a good idea of regular police procedures and took pictures before he got the package off of my car.
"We'll turn this over to the local police and have it analyzed and the package itself processed for prints. You try and have a safe day sir."
Karl and I got back into my car.
"Somebody is getting damn serious lover."
"Yeah, and I hope we find out who PDQ."
"You going to tell the Dean about this?"
"I'm sure he'll hear about it before we can get back on campus. Which we had better get our asses in gear if we intend to be on time."
We headed back to the apartment. We didn't get very far before a patrol car rolled up behind us and flashed its lights. I pulled over to the first safe spot and kept my hands on the steering wheel.
"Would you step out of the car and to the curb please?"
"What's the problem officer?"
