We all moved around to the front of Cochran Hall.

"Dennis, just my imagination, or were they genuinely surprised to see you?"

"They certainly appeared to be surprised, Eddie. I wouldn't let that have any bearing on us, however. It could have been a setup to lull us into thinking they were genuinely surprised and worried. I think every one of us needs to get it into our heads that every team this season is going to do everything that they can to mess with us. We're the all-state champs 2 years running. Head games against us are going to be a given. We can't let our guards down for one minute."

"I think Dennis has hit the nail right on the head. Keep it in mind for the whole season. Now go get some rest and I'll see you all at breakfast."

I got back to the apartment and Karl just about had supper ready.

"So, how did Kilbride look?"

"Surprised to see me standing in line."

"Yeah, I'm sure they thought they were done having to deal with you last year."

"Maybe lover, but it was a bit contrived to me. I told the guys that we were going to have to expect head games all season after seeing that."

"Could very well have been genuine concern lover. I doubt word has gotten around that you're back this year."

"Well, it sure will get around after this weekend, win, lose, or draw. Let's eat so I can crash."

Which was just what we did.

Saturday morning and Karl was out for the jogging and I was in the cafeteria for the team breakfast. Then it was over to the rec center to wait for our warm-up time.

We got our warm-up in and then it was back to the locker room while they let the folks into the hall. While we waited Eddie had a few words to say.

"Ok guys, first meet of the season so let's make it a good one. We've got a reputation to uphold here. Some of us are likely to be matched up with their more experienced guys. Don't let them intimidate you. We are every bit as good as any of their guys."

Shortly after that, we took the floor. The guy I was matched up with looked nervous as all hell. We just went to work. Pommel Horse was first. I just went and did my routine as best I could. The poor kid I was against was so nervous he barely had a grip on the horse when he started. The guy's routine was lackluster at best. I wasn't falling for it and I hoped the other guys weren't.

We moved on to the parallel bars and I went through and did my routine. The guy I was with saw that I wasn't letting up and when he approached the bar I saw him square his shoulders and all appearance of nervousness disappeared. The guy went on to do a damn good bar routine.

After that, we both went all out on the other pieces of equipment. I threw the triples on everything except the rings. That one was being held for emergencies. When I was done and looked at the scoreboard I saw every one of the Kilbride guys had at least one really lousy rotation. I'd be willing to bet it was the first one for each of them. Our guys hadn't fallen for it and had kept up their work throughout the meet. We had obviously won the meet and our guys swept the floor.

Karl and the guys got to me.

"Was it as obvious to you as it was to me that they were trying to head game you on the first rotations?"

"It was to me lover, and apparently to the other guys as well. From what I saw on the scoreboard not one of our guys fell for it."

The award ceremonies took place and we were all into the showers. As was now the custom we all filed over to Cochran Hall and saw the Kilbride team on their way.

It was back to the apartment and a late lunch for me and then I just kicked back for the rest of the afternoon and evening.

Sunday we were at it again with the whole crowd joining us for our laps. Once Karl and I were done with that, it was back to the apartment. After breakfast, it was hitting the books once again.

6 PM and I heard the security gate open.

"It's that time again, Karl."

"Think we'll miss this when we graduate?"

"More than likely."

It was downstairs for us and helping to get the table set.

"So, I hear that yesterday's meet went very well."

"Yes, it did. I don't think they expected to see me there this year."

"Well, I'm sure that word will be getting around very quickly on that matter."

"I have no doubt whatsoever."

we were soon enough done with supper and Karl and I were back upstairs. I checked my phone as we were in the habit of leaving them in the apartment when we went down to supper.

I had one missed message from a number I recognized.

I dialed it back.

"Hey, big brother. I hear you had a hell of a meet yesterday."

"Hey, Doug. Yeah, we took Kilbride down fairly easily. How's life been treating you guys?"

"Not too badly. Drake and I both did pretty well in our last dressage event. Senior year for me and just hoping to get through it and looking at colleges."

"Look very closely is all I can tell you. Otherwise, how is Drake doing?"

"Hold on and you can ask him yourself."

"Hi, Dennis! I see your team wiped the floor yesterday."

"Yeah, it was a good meet. so, how are you doing?"

"I'm hanging in, even found a girl who is interested in me for me."

"Good for you! I hope it lasts."

"So do I. Hold on a sec, Dad just walked in."

"Well, Dennis I understand congratulations are in order for yesterday."

"Thanks, Daniel. Yeah, we had a good meet."

"Now, what about your proposal?"

"Fully funded and waiting for the building permits to be approved."

"Do you see any problems there?"

"I don't and neither did the contractor I'm using."

"Well, should you run into any problems that I might be able to help with, be sure to call me."

"I will Daniel."

"I'm giving you back to Douglas."

"Well, I suppose I need to let you go hit the books. I probably should as well."

"Yeah, I have a little bit to get done before morning. You guys take care of yourselves."

"Yeah, you too. Say hi to Karl for us."

"Will do. Take care."

"So your little brothers are right on top of things again it sounds."

"Yeah, they are. They say hi by the way."

After that Karl and settled down to taking care of schoolwork until we crashed.

Monday morning and we were at it once again. The whole crowd was still jogging with us, thankfully uninterrupted. We were soon enough off to classes.

English and Public Speaking were soon out of the way and I was on my bench with my lunch. Pete and Susan stopped by.

"Hell of a meet Dennis."

"Yeah, we done good."

"Who is up next?"

"Olivette middle of next month and it's an away meet Suze. After them all showing up in matching blazers last year, I'm kinda looking forward to seeing their campus."

"Yeah, a fairly new school it should be something."

"You heard any more from Adams?"

"No I haven't Pete and I hope not to at all."

"Amen to that. We'll catch you later Den."

I finished my lunch and then headed over to the Logic class.

Mrs Armbruster was right there to get things going today and the class seemed to be over before it even got started today.

I headed for the apartment and when I got there, I looked to see if anything had been pulled out for supper. There hadn't been anything pulled so I thought that We'd go and hit Rons tonight.

Karl pulled in at about his usual time.

"Nothing going for supper?"

"No, I felt like Rons tonight."

"Then I guess there's no time like the present."

We went down and took Karl's car tonight and shortly we were at Ron's. The lot was rather full for a Monday night, but we found a place to park and went inside. Paul and Cam were there and they motioned us over to sit with them.

Gladys soon had our order taken and our food delivered.

"So, Dennis I heard something today."

"Do I want to know?"

"Probably not, but here goes anyway. It's going around that the whole gymnastics team is gay."

"That's bullshit and everybody should know that."

"Yeah, but they see them jogging with us in the morning and it's pretty well known by now that the original group of us are gay."

"Even if they were, it shouldn't make any difference. I'll bring it up with the guys and see how they want to handle it."

"Are any of the rest of them gay?"
