Saturday morning and it was drizzling out, so I wasn't faced with the decision to go jogging or not. We both rolled over and dozed for a while before I finally got up and started to get ready for the all-day practice.

When it was time, I headed into the practice. Nearly everybody was there before me this morning. I got changed up and went out to stretch with the guys.

Both coaches were there this morning and we got right to work. We ran a full meet, with everyone throwing their triples, and then broke for lunch. Which meant over to the student union for most of us.

It was pretty deserted for a Saturday and we were all quickly served. Of the few that were there, a couple of them had somewhat scowls on their faces.

The team was all pretty much sitting together and I just knew that there was something going to be said. I looked at Eddie.

"Ignore it guys."

"Ignore what?"

"Fucking faggots."

"That."

Eddie gave all of the guys a look that said to ignore it as well.

"Just some misinformed people who can't be bothered to check things out for themselves."

The guys didn't look happy, but they sat back down.

"Finish up and let's get back to work guys."

Eddie was filling the job of team captain nicely.

We all finished our meals and headed back to the rec center.

"Dennis, you have to put up with a lot of that?"

"A fair amount Irwin. Last year it was a lot worse though. There was a group trying to break up our frat."

"Yeah, I remember hearing about that. And with you being so open about it, you must have put up with a lot of shit."

"I did, which is why I can ignore it now. If nothing is said it shouldn't escalate into something worse. Having said that, I know Dean Evans won't put up with it either. He takes the no-harassment policy damned seriously."

We were soon back at it again and ran another whole meet. When we were released, I headed for the pool and was followed by everybody.

"You guys know we're not all going to fit in the whirlpool at the same time right?"

Some of the guys only did a couple of laps in the pool before they were off. I stayed a bit longer and when I did go to the whirlpool it was only Eddie and Steve that were there.

"Dennis, that bit at the student union, we going to have to put up with a lot of that?"

"Honestly, I don't know Eddie. After the whole thing last year, I would have thought folks would have gotten the idea that it wasn't going to be tolerated."

"I suppose there are always a few who don't get the message."

"Always seems that way."

I soaked for a few more minutes and then hit the showers. Once out and dressed I gave Karl his call and headed back to the apartment.

"Good workout?"

"Yeah everybody seems in good shape, even the alternates."

"So Kilbride should be a breeze right?"

"You know we can't think like that Karl. We have to believe that every meet is going to be the toughest one of the season."

"I know that Den, but look at the lineup. 4 members of the all-state all-around gold team college division, and 2 members from the high school division. You guys should mop up this season."

"I'll be the first to admit that we've got the talent Karl, but that isn't always enough and you know it."

"I know all it takes is one bad day Den, but we're not having any of those this year, not if I can help it."

"We can only hope lover."

We had our supper and parked ourselves in front of the TV tonight, as I was pretty beat. Eventually, we sacked out and Sunday morning rolled around.

The sky was clear and Karl and I were soon on our way to campus. We collected the whole group once again and did our laps without incident.

Back to the apartment and the day was pretty much spent getting schoolwork done. 6 pm finally rolled around and I heard the gate open. I checked and it was Paul and Cam.

"Time to head down Karl."

"So Dennis, first meet of the season next weekend."

"Yes sir, against Kilbride."

"As memory serves, the team has done very well against them the last couple of years."

"We have sir, and I have no doubt we will again."

"With as much talent as you have on the team, I have no doubts."

It was pretty much just small talk for the rest of dinner and Karl and I headed back up to the apartment after helping clear the table.

What little schoolwork I had to do got done, while Karl was still hard at it. Eventually, we crashed for the night.

Monday morning was bright and clear and we were over to campus and gathered the whole group once again. Our laps were run, again with no comments being heard, and Karl and I went to the apartment and got ourselves ready for the day.

English and Public speaking were seen to for the day and I was once again on my bench with my lunch.

It wasn't any of the regulars that found me today, but it was Bob Watson.

"There's a rumor going around Dennis, that Adams is trying to smear your name."

"I've heard that too. I can neither confirm nor deny that one Bob, and frankly I wish you wouldn't dig into it. Yeah I know, that's your job, to dig. Honestly, I was hoping for a quiet year. If it is happening and I can prove it beyond a doubt, you'll be my second call, maybe my third."

"Who is the first?"

"Dean Evans."

"Fair enough Den. I'm not going to stop digging, but I won't submit anything without getting your input first."

"Fair enough."

Bob got on his way. The next one to stop by was even more of a surprise.

"Well Dennis, I see you're back to cause no end of trouble."

"Hey Mr McEmbers. Actually, I'm really hoping for no trouble this year."

"We could certainly use one with no problems. Speaking of problems, has Mr Adams given you any grief yet this year?"

"Not directly, but I do have it on good authority that he did try and tell one of my instructors a different version than the official one of last year's events."

"And likely if he has done it to one he has done it to others."

"That I have no information on."

"I'll keep my ears open Dennis."

"As will I."

Mr McEmbers got on his way after that and I headed over to Logic. Once that was taken care of and with tomorrow being a mandatory practice, I headed back to the apartment and did a little work until it was time to get supper on the stove.

Karl showed up at about this usual time.

"You have a good day Den?"

"Yeah, it was completely uneventful."

"Haven't been able to say that very often."

"Let's hope for more days like this. Supper's up in 5."

Once we ate and got things cleaned up it was on to schoolwork for the evening.

Tuesday morning and we were at it again. Once our laps were run we were back to the apartment and got ready for the day. I got a few things done around the apartment before I headed in for Creative Writing. My mystery story was due today. I turned it in and a few stories were read and critiqued, and then I was off to lunch.

It was a completely undisturbed lunch today and I eventually made my way over to the Psyche class. Once that was out of the way, I headed over to the rec center for another mandatory practice.

The practice went well for everyone and then coach called us in.

"Ok, Kilbride should be here around 6, so I expect you guys to be there to meet them. Gary is hosting as usual. Take it easy until then."

I headed for the pool and was once again followed by the rest of the team. I got my time in here and then my whirlpool time as well. I showered, called Karl, and headed back to the apartment.

"Good workout?"

"Yeah, everybody is in good shape."

We had our supper soon after.

The rest of the week went along uneventfully. Finally, it was Friday afternoon and I along with the rest of the team, were waiting outside of Cochran Hall. A little after 6 the Kilbride bus pulled in.

They were a pretty happy bunch until those who had been on the team the last couple of years saw me standing there. Those folks seemed to deflate pretty quickly, which didn't go unnoticed by my team. It was their coach who spoke up.

"Well Mr Sawyer, didn't expect to see you here again this year."

Yes, well I decided that as long as circumstances had me here, that I might just as well take advantage of the time to further my education."

Gary got things moving shortly after that and Eddie gestures to have the team follow him.
