We had our supper and then hit the books. I started to outline my mystery story and we eventually crashed for the night.
Hump day and we were at it again. We were over for our laps with the guys. We were making our final lap around the quad when I heard it.
"Fucking faggots."
It wasn't actually directed at us, but we were the only ones around. I saw Eddie and Steve start to bristle.
"Ignore it guys. It's not worth the hassle."
"We told you we'd handle it Den and we will, in our own fashion."
"Please Eddie, just don't go beating the crap out of anybody."
"Last resort I promise."
We finished our laps and Karl and I headed back to the apartment.
"Think that was the prelude to something?"
"I'm hoping not. We had enough of that last year."
We ate and cleaned up and were off to classes again.
English was gotten through without any hassles as was Public Speaking.
My lunch and bench time today were undisturbed for whatever reason, which was fine.
When I got into Logic, Mrs Armbruster did give me a look. I wondered all class just what that look might mean. When I was on my way out she did motion me aside.
"It seems Mr Adams is out to see your name muddied Mr Sawyer. He tried to tell me a different version of what happened last year than the one which is supposed to be the "official" account."
"I can't say as I'm surprised Mrs Armbrusater. I would appreciate that wherever you can, you would refute that story and perhaps report it to Dean Evans. I don't want to make waves as it will appear that I am going after Mr Adams."
"Yes, I see what you mean Mr Sawyer. I'll see what I can do."
"Then, have a good afternoon Mrs Armbruster."
Tomorrow was a scheduled practice, as was Saturday, so I headed back to the apartment. When I got home I did some more work on my story while I was getting supper going. Karl came in and just went and collapsed on the couch.
"Long day lover?"
"Yeah long, drawn out, and boring. How was yours?"
"The usual for the most part."
"The most part? Explain."
"Mrs Armbruster was given an alternate version of last year's events, one that paints me in a rather poor light according to her."
"And did you go to the Dean?"
"Nope, but I did ask Mrs Armbruster to have a word with him. From me, it might look as if I was looking for a fight."
"Just what you don't need right now."
"Or any other time for that matter."
"True enough I suppose. Supper almost ready?"
"Yeah in 5."
We had our supper and then settled down to work on school stuff. I got what reading I had to do taken care of and then went to work on my story. By the time we crashed for the night, I was about a third of the way through my outline.
"At the rate you're going Den, that's going to be a hell of a story."
"Yeah well, it's a lot harder than I thought it would be. I need to keep it interesting while still getting the clues out there to solve that damn mystery."
"Yeah, I remember. I passed the course, but I didn't do really well with it. Guess I don't have the knack."
"Makes me appreciate folks who write full-blown novels."
We were soon to bed after that and then Thursday morning was there way too early.
So it was up and out as usual. Laps today went uncommented on by anyone. Karl and I were soon enough back to the apartment and ready to tackle the day. I did a few things around the apartment until it was time to head into Creative Writing. A few more stories were read today and the old one was handed back. I was pleased to see that I had gotten a good grade on my first story.
When class was over, I headed over to the student union and grabbed my lunch and bench time.
They didn't stop, but I saw Eddie and Steve on their way somewhere and they each had a lady on their arm. Their way of handling it I suppose.
Greg and Josh happened by as well.
"You ready for the practice Den?"
"Of course I am. Still got one class to go first though."
"Any of them giving you any trouble so far?"
"Nope. How are you guys holding up?"
"We're good so far."
"Then I'll catch you in a couple of hours."
It was time I started to make my way over to the Psych class.
A few of the write-ups from the first assignment were shared and discussed.
Finally, I headed over to the rec center for the scheduled workout. Seeing as this was a scheduled workout, the room was closed off to spectators. That meant that everybody would be throwing all of their triples today.
Everybody had at least one it seemed. As far as I could tell, I was still the only one who had four, though Josh and Greg were working hard to match me. I figured that by the time the all states rolled around again, they would have them nailed.
I just worked all of my routines today and saw a surprised look on the faces of our 4 "newbies" when I threw the triple dismount from the rings.
I finished up my routines and headed for the pool. Before I was done with my laps I had been joined not only by Eddie and Steve but Bob and Irwin as well.
"You guys going to join us for jogging in the morning as well?"
"We were thinking about it, Dennis."
"Hey, the more the merrier."
I headed for the whirlpool and there were a couple of guys in it already, not from the team.
There weren't any words spoken, but it was pretty obvious that they were uncomfortable and they left in short order. I was soon enough joined by the guys from the team. I didn't say anything to them about the guys who had just left. I didn't need to be stirring up any trouble.
We all had our soak and I hit the showers a bit before the rest of them. I gave Karl his call and then headed back to the apartment.
"Good day, lover?"
"Good enough. Don't be surprised if we have a couple more joggers with us in the morning."
"Oh?"
"Yeah Bob and Irwin, the two freshmen alternates may well be joining us."
"Think Eddie or Steve had anything to do with that?"
"Always a possibility I suppose."
"What are the odds the rest of the team will be joining us?"
"I'd guess it isn't entirely out of the question."
"That's going to be quite a group of us running together."
"Yeah, I guess they'll sure as hell make way for us."
Soon after we sat down to supper, after which we went to work on school stuff. My story was coming along fine now that I had revised my plan of attack a bit. I ended up modeling it after a tried and true format. When I was done the story could easily have been converted to an episode of "Murder, She Wrote". Not long after that, we crashed.
Which brought us to Friday. When we got to Cochran Hall this morning, Greg and Josh were out front with Paul and Cam. I could see Steve, Eddie, Bob, and Irwin coming around from the freshman dorm, and Gordon and Aiden were waiting at the junior dorm. When we all got going and made our way around the end of the quad, Jack was there at the senior dorm and joined us as well.
I wondered if Greg, as our new team captain, had something to do with this. I didn't object of course, as I had always said the more the merrier. Not everybody completed the full 5 laps today, but I had little doubt that in time they would.
Karl and I got back to the car and headed for the apartment.
"Well, that was a bit of a surprise. Think they'll all keep it up?"
"I'm thinking that our new team captain will see to it."
We got back to the apartment and got ourselves ready for the day. English and public speaking out of the way, it was lunch and bench time.
Pete and Susan stopped by.
"I was looking out my window this morning Den. That was quite a bunch running with you and Karl this morning."
"Yeah, the whole gymnastics team was there along with the usual suspects."
"Getting everybody pumped up for next weekend?"
"Could be. It isn't my idea so I can't say for certain."
"Sounds like Greg may be taking his newfound position a little too seriously."
"Always possible I suppose, but I doubt anybody is being forced."
"Maybe they've all seen your success and figured it couldn't hurt to copy you."
"Always possible Suz."
"Well, it's about that time."
Pete and Susan headed off to their class and I headed for Logic.
Once through with that I headed back to the apartment and hit the books while supper was on the stove. I knew I wouldn't be in the mood tomorrow night as it was the first all-day practice of the season.
