Of all people, it was Mr Adams who was speaking to Mrs Armbruster.
I suppose it could have been innocent enough, but my stomach didn't think so. Especially when he turned and saw me coming, and he got a rather smug look on his face.
I didn't say anything and just stepped into class and took my seat.
Mrs Armbruster stepped in a few moments later and started the class. I tried not to let the fact she had been talking to Adams bother me. When it was time to leave I got up to do so.
"Mr. Sawyer, if you please"
All I could think of was "Here it comes".
"Mr Sawyer, I couldn't help but notice the look that passed between you and Mr Adams. Let me just say that I am aware of last semester's events, or at the very least a version of them. I dare say the entire faculty is aware. Even should Mr Adams try to influence my perception of you I assure you it will not influence how you do in this course. When I saw your name on my class roster I did some checking of my own with several of the other professors. I am quite satisfied as to your character."
"Thank you, Mrs Armbruster. That is a relief to hear."
"Yes, I'm sure it is. Mr Adams has been a friend of my family for many years, so it isn't something for you to worry about should you see me talking to him. Now, I don't know about you, but I have another class to get to."
"Then I shall see you on Wednesday."
I went and checked the car and then headed back to the apartment. It would be a while before Karl got home so I hit the books for a bit before starting supper.
The fact that Adams was on campus must have been weighing on me as just as soon as Karl walked through the door he knew something was up.
"Damn, not a month into classes. What's up now Den?"
"Found out for sure that Adams is on campus. I saw him talking to one of my instructors. She says that he is just a friend of the family and will have no effect on my class."
"Then I'd say forget about it."
"That's just one teacher Karl. I've got what 4 others the first half of the year and another 3 or 4 the second half. He only needs to get to one to screw me out of my degree."
"Den, there can't be any of the instructors that haven't heard about last year. I doubt like hell that he will find a sympathetic ear anywhere."
"Mrs Armbruster thinks so as well. Hope you're both right lover. Supper in 5."
We sat down and had our meal and after things were cleaned up we hit the books again until we crashed for the night.
Tuesday and we were at it again. Gordon was the one who caught me this morning.
"Ok Dennis, what the hell is up now?"
"I saw Mr Adams speaking to one of my instructors yesterday."
"And you're afraid he's going to bad mouth you to all of them and try to screw you again this year?"
"That about sums it up Aiden."
"Mr Adams? We've got him for Intro to Business."
"Well for your own good don't let on that you know me, Eddie."
"Why not?"
"Long story short, he had dealings with my father that turned into an all-out fight. Adams lost and when he took over one of my classes last year decided he was going to flunk me because he wouldn't take my word for something. Push came to shove and he lost that argument as well. I just don't want to see him take it out on you guys just because you know me."
"Guy sounds like a real jerk."
"You'll get no argument from me, Steve."
After that, it was a quiet run. Karl and I got back to the apartment and got ready for the day.
It was into Creative Writing and a few stories were read and critiqued and we got our next assignment. A mystery story. That was the only directive given.
As usual, I went over to the student union for my lunch and bench time. Pete and Susan stopped by.
"We heard Adams is still on campus."
"Yeah he is, but I think the word has already gone out that he's pushing sour grapes to a new level, so I'm not too worried for myself."
"Who are you worried for?"
"People like Steve and Eddie who might wind up guilty by association."
"Anything you can do about it?"
"Not that I know of except to have a word with Dean Evans if it does happen."
"Which will likely make matters worse this time."
"Always a possibility, but I'm thinking much more trash from Adams and he will be getting the boot tenure or not."
"OK, Later Den. We've got a couple of things to take care of before our next class."
"Later guys."
Soon enough it was time to get over to Psych. Today's subject was behavioral analysis. It droned on for the full 90 minutes.
Finally, I was on my way over to the rec center and a workout in the apparatus room. I was changed up and stretching out when the two guys who were going to start as our alternates came towards me.
"Dennis, can we talk to you for a second?"
"Sure, is there a problem?"
"We just wanted to make sure we heard you right the other day. You said you were back here this year because of your husband."
"That's right Bob."
"So... you're gay?"
"Yes I am and everybody knows it. If it's a problem for you just tell Coach and he'll be sure not to room us up on the away meets."
"It was a bit of a concern."
"Well don't let it worry you, Irwin. Like I said the other day I'm here with my husband and I'm not about to screw that up by trying to hook up with anybody. Beyond that, is it going to be a problem if I should have to 'spot' you?"
"I don't think I can honestly answer that until it happens Dennis."
"Fair enough Bob. Looks like Eddie wants us to get to it."
So that's what we did. This wasn't a scheduled practice, so I just worked my floor and rings today and only did the triples on the floor. I was still holding the rings in reserve. Then as usual it was into the pool for a few laps.
I was a bit surprised when Eddie and Steve joined me a bit later.
"This more of what's good for the goose Eddie?"
"Yeah, I guess you could say that Den. This does work the muscles in a different way after all."
"And I suppose you'll hit the hot tub after as well?"
"Hell, that's a given Den."
"Just so you know, you're opening yourselves up to being painted gay if you hang around with me too much more."
"We did think about that Den, and we'll cross that bridge if we come to it."
"Don't say you weren't warned."
I did a couple of more laps and then headed for the tub. Not long after Eddie and Steve showed up as well.
A couple of guys who had just been working out, looked like they were going to hit the tub as well. When they saw me in there they stopped. I had a decent idea of what was going through their minds as it was certainly no secret that I was gay. One guy just nudged the other without saying anything and they moved on.
"Does that happen often Den?"
"You noticed then. No not usually. I mean any of the sports guys don't have a problem after something I did."
"Do we want to know?"
"One of the guys on the football team didn't think it took a lot to do gymnastics, so I challenged him. He tried working the pommel horse and found out it wasn't that easy. I had to go over and survive a football warm-up and a couple of plays. The footballers I guess, were impressed until he let it slip that I'm gay. Only one guy took umbrage at that. Ever since though it hasn't been a problem if I'm here they just go about it like I was just one of the guys."
"So you don't think it's going to be a real problem?"
"No, I don't Steve, except maybe with the freshmen. After that whole rigamarole with the lawsuits and everything last year, I'm thinking it may well be a non-issue with any of the upperclassmen."
I was soon after that out of the tub and hit the showers. I gave Karl a call to let him know I was on my way.
"So what kind of a day Den?"
"Not bad. Steve and Eddie have taken to swimming laps with me now as well."
Karl thought about that one for a minute.
"They're going to get a reputation aren't they?"
"Always a possibility, and I did warn them."
"Think there's going to be another problem this year?"
"I'm doubting it after the examples that were set last year."
"But it is possible?"
"Hell Karl, anything is possible."
