Right at the top of the list was one from Jason Mouraue. I opened it.
Dennis,
I don't foresee any problems with these
alterations. Should be able to have them done by
end of May, depending on permit approval. Budget
you gave is more than adequate. Just waiting for
final go-ahead before I submit for permits.
Jason
I quickly sent back to him.
Jason,
Authorization to proceed is given. Will follow -up
with written authorization.
Dennis.
"Looks like it is a go for the building Lover."
"Well, damn. This guy thinks he can bring it in on time and on budget?"
"He sounds pretty confident as long as there isn't too much of a hold up getting the permits. It also looks like I'm going to have to hit the office here sooner than I expected."
"Why?"
"I need to send Jason a written authorization on company letterhead and signed. I could probably put it off until I get home and have them have it ready for me to sign, but I'd like to get this whole thing started sooner rather than later."
"So then, you going to hit the office tomorrow?"
"Yeah seeing as I have a mandatory on Thursday."
"And what about Saturday?"
"I'm good to go. Friday I intend to be on the road home by 2."
"Guess you'll be riding alone lover."
"Yeah, I guessed as much. Right now though I have a 3-minute speech to outline for tomorrow."
"Let me guess, the old 'hello my name is....' speech."
"That's the one, not to mention the reading I have to do."
So we both got to doing our homework and we crashed at our usual time.
Wednesday morning and we were up and at it once again. Once I got to class it was pretty much routine. Freshman English we worked our way through sentence structure.
The Public Speaking I wasn't particularly looking forward to but I got through the speech without too much of a problem. There was a little bit of a stir when I openly admitted to being married and gay, but we got past that pretty quickly.
I took the time before Logic to go over to the student union and get my lunch and bench time. It seemed everybody was too busy to stop and talk today, which was fine. I still had to compose the letter to Jason at least in my head.
Finally, it was time to get over to Logic. The theory was easy enough to understand. If A=B and B=C then A=C. The practice of it was where the meat of this course lay.
Once that was taken care of I went and inspected the car and headed out to the local office of the company. Now I wasn't dressed my best, but it wasn't torn jeans and a tank top either.
I eventually found the office and a place to park and I walked into the lobby and up to the receptionist.
"Good afternoon sir, How may I help you?"
"Yes, I'd like to see Mr Judson please."
"Mr Judson is with another client at the moment. Could one of our other traders help you?"
"I'm afraid not."
"Very well sir. May I have your name?"
"Sawyer, Dennis Sawyer."
The look on the woman's face said 'Yeah right'.
"Very good Mr Sawyer. If you'll just have a seat I'll inform Mr Judson once he is free."
Well, at least she didn't tell me to take a hike.
I took a seat and waited. Once a very well-dressed gentleman left, the receptionist got on her phone.
It was only a few moments before a middle-aged man came out to the lobby.
"Mr Sawyer, I'm Mr Judson. How can we help you today?"
"You're satisfied that I'm your boss?"
"I'd be a pretty damn sorry employee if I didn't know my boss now wouldn't I?"
"Point taken. I need to dictate a letter, to be typed on company stationery, and mailed out for overnight delivery."
"Not a problem at all. Jenny, get someone to cover the lobby for a bit."
We moved back to a vacant office.
"This will give you a little bit of privacy."
I dictated the letter that I wanted and waited for it to be typed. I then signed it and saw that it got posted for overnight delivery.
"Will we be seeing you often Mr Sawyer?"
"Only as business dictates Mr Judson. I have a rather full class schedule as well as a gymnastics season to take care of."
"Well, anytime you need us we'll be here."
"I appreciate that Mr Judson, and thank you."
The whole trip had taken about 90 minutes so I was back to the apartment well before Karl. I got our supper started and started to skim the reading for the Psych class.
Karl showed up a short time later.
"So, any problem at the office?"
"Actually, no. Apparently, Mr Judson had been expecting me to show up at some point and had made it a point to know what I looked like. I can't say the same for the receptionist."
"She give you grief?"
"No, she was just rather skeptical of me until Mr Judson spoke up."
"My guess is that won't be a problem now."
"I'm doubting it very much. Supper should be ready in 10."
Once we were done with supper, I got busy working on my first story for the Creative Writing class. This first one was to be a short fairy tale or bedtime story. Trying to find something that hadn't been done to death was the tricky part. I finally settled on a boy and monster theme. I found that once I got started on the story it wasn't that hard for me to see it through to the end. I even let Karl read it.
"Maybe you've got a future in storytelling if the whole market thing goes bust."
"Not counting on it lover. It's about that time. Let's sack out."
Thursday and we were at it once again. Once the routine was taken care of I did a few things around the apartment before I headed into Creative Writing. Now the stories were going to be read by Mr McCallister and critiqued by the students, and this was going to be done without revealing the name of the student whose story was being read. To get through all of the stories would take the better part of two classes if not more. So, writing assignments were only going to be once a week. The last part of every other class was going to be the specifics of the next story to be written.
When mine had been read to the class the opinions were rather split, which is about what I had expected. Some stories got more favorable revues, but a good many of them didn't. I counted myself lucky with the mixed bag.
After class, it was over to the student union for lunch and bench time. Once again nobody took the time to stop and talk, which was fine.
I eventually headed over to the Psych class. The first assignment was the one I had already been warned about. The choices were two same-gender persons going shopping for engagement rings, being arrested, or pretending to be gay for a week.
"Will we be allowed to use past experience, or is this something that has to be done currently?"
"Past experience will be acceptable. The crux of the exercise is to offer possible reasons for the behavior you encounter."
So, it amounted to choosing between being arrested or the shopping experience. Time for that choice later.
Class being finally over, I headed for the rec center for the mandatory practice.
We were all out on the floor and getting stretched out when Coach Warren came on out.
"Well gentlemen, I'm sure that is going to come as no surprise that for the time being Mr Baxter and Mr Clements are going to be our alternates. Having said that you gents will get your chance to compete. For today, I want to see you all in team format. Dennis, lead us off at the horse."
So, I went and did my routine and watched as others did theirs. It continued this way all afternoon. Finally, coach called us in.
"There's just one little piece of work left for us today gentlemen. We have to elect a team captain. Is there anyone who wishes to throw their hat into the ring?"
Everybody just stood there for a few seconds as nobody wanted to be the first. Josh spoke up.
"Coach, nobody here has done more for this team than Dennis. He should be our Captain even if it will only be for a year."
"I've already declined the position, Josh. You guys probably don't know it, but I've got a business deal going on at home that will likely take up any spare time I have this year."
What it came down to was Josh and Eddie Meyer going for it. Whichever way I voted, I was going to piss somebody off. Unless it was a tie, I was going to abstain.
In the end, it was Eddie who was elected. I'm sure it was his past performance at the All-State that had swung the vote.
Now it was just getting ready for our first meet of the year and it was against Kilbride in just 3 weeks.
