"Good afternoon Mr Adams. Is there something further the group needs?"
"Not in the least Mr Sawyer. This is a personal call. I just wanted you to know that my brother's article isn't going to have much if any, impact on our consideration of your proposal."
"I thought as much, but it is nice to have it verified. I don't suppose you can give me any hint as to what or when that decision will be?"
"Sorry, I can't."
"I understand. Thank you for the call and I do hope to hear from the Group soon."
"You're welcome Mr Sawyer and I do think it will be sooner rather than later. Have a good day."
Stan appeared at my door.
"Did I hear the Adams name?"
"You did. Oliver Adams was just calling to let me know that the article will have little if any bearing on the Group's decision."
"Which will be?"
"Delivered in their own good time, of which I have no idea."
"He didn't give you any indication which way it was going to go?"
"Not in so many words, but the fact that he called at all makes me think the odds are good."
"Good enough to go ahead and call the realtor and get a bid in?"
"I'm not ready to commit without something from the Group. I mean I could buy the building, but what good would that do without the other 5 mil to do the renovations and everything?"
"Yeah, I see your point. Well, damn near time to go home. I didn't see anything Earth-shattering going on today."
"Neither did I Stan. See you in the morning."
I made my way home and waited for Karl to show up.
"Any word Den?"
"Not really."
"Ok, that needs to be explained."
"Oliver Adams called today to say that his brother's article would have little if any bearing on the final decision of the Group. No other details were forthcoming."
"But the fact that he called means they are giving it serious consideration I should think."
"Yeah, that's the same conclusion Stan and I came to."
"So, it's sit and wait some more."
"Looks like."
At which point we were called to table. After we ate we spent about an hour in the exercise room before crashing in front of the TV for a bit and then going to bed.
Wednesday dawned cloudy but dry, so we got our jogging in with Roland and Aaron and then after cleaning up, we made our way to work.
I was feeling a bit confident that the Group was going to come through with the loan. I started a rough floor plan for the changes I was going to want done to the building. The second gymnasium was going to be the gymnastics area. I was adding whirlpools to the locker rooms, which would otherwise remain the same, and expanding the first aid section. I was intending to have someone with a sports medicine background in there. A good deal of the exercise equipment was going to be replaced and some different machines added as well.
There was a boxing ring and other equipment in a dedicated area and I was going to leave that pretty much as it was. The office areas were going to stay pretty much the same as well. Really all that was needed here was an equipment update and a coat of paint.
I did manage to keep an eye on the markets while doing this. Things seemed to stay pretty steady throughout the day. About 3 my intercom buzzed.
"There's a Mr Matthews here to see you. He doesn't have an appointment."
The only thing I could think of was that it was Coach Matthews.
"Please show him back."
It was indeed the coach.
"Coach Matthews, what can I do for you today?"
"Truth to tell, not much Dennis. I wanted to know how that proposal of yours was coming along."
"I'm waiting to hear from an investment group on whether or not I get a loan."
"How is that looking?"
"Promising. How about the Edgeton facility?"
"Going to be several weeks before they reopen. It was an electrical fire and almost all of the wiring is shot."
"Damn, and that was a fairly new building."
"It was and the guys who installed all of the electricity are under a microscope at this point."
Can I ask a favor while you're here Coach?'
"Ask away."
"Will you take a look at this rough drawing and see if there is anything I missed?"
Coach took my rough drawing and gave it a good look.
"Only thing I see missing is a balance beam and uneven bars area."
"I hadn't even given the ladies a thought, thanks Coach."
"I noticed that they were missing from Edgeton as well but they didn't seem interested in rectifying the situation."
"Their loss I'm sure. Was there anything else I can do for you, Coach?"
"Just let me know when you start taking applications for the place."
"You'll be the first Coach."
Coach left after that and Stan poked his head into my office.
"You spot anything today boss?"
"No, I haven't Stan, though I have a question for you."
"Shoot."
"I need an architect to formalize these plans for the center. Know anyone?"
"As a matter of fact I do. Mouraue Enterprises can take care of the design and any construction that will need to be done, and Jason Mouraue just happens to be a client."
"Works for me. Now all we need is for Bogda to come through."
"Doesn't look like we'll be hearing from them today."
"Nope. Hopefully tomorrow, and I can get a bid in on Friday."
"And that they accept it."
"True enough. I'll see you in the morning Stan."
Shortly after I was on my way home and got there ahead of Karl as usual. He was there shortly after.
"So from the look on your face, there was no news today."
"None."
"Going to make it difficult to get things going before we head back to school."
"I know it. I can get a lot accomplished through teleconferencing though, which means I need to get a camera for the computer."
"Not something we have to run out for tonight."
"Nope, I'll pick one up next time we go shopping."
We sat down to supper shortly after. Mrs Ohanlon was on her way and Karl and I just parked ourselves in front of the TV tonight and then crashed early.
Thursday and we were up and at it once again. I got to work and got the usual report from Stan.
"Nothing outrageous in the overnight trading and the European markets are just going along at a steady rate."
"Nothing to be kept an eye on?"
"Nothing in particular boss."
"So we just keep on keeping on I guess."
So we got down to business for the day.
I spent the morning researching some new offerings and noon finally rolled around along with my roast beef sandwich.
The afternoon looked as if it was going to be as uneventful as the morning. No such luck. My intercom buzzed.
"Mrs Hines, I have a Mr Gibson here in the lobby wishing to see Mr Sawyer. Is he available?"
Now for Mrs Daniels to call me rather than Mrs Hines was not a mistake she would make. I knew that after the recent security upgrades that all communications were handled over headsets now.
"I take it you don't think this guy is on the up and up?"
"That's correct, he doesn't have an appointment."
"The nature of his business?"
"He's recently won a substantial amount from the Lottery and wishes to invest it."
Now, I didn't play the Lottery, but I did keep a casual eye on it and I knew there hadn't been a large winner in weeks.
"Please inform him that I'm on a teleconference, but any of our traders will be happy to help him."
"He says he only deals with the head man."
"Then advise him to make an appointment."
"He says it's now or he'll take his business elsewhere."
"Apologize for my being tied up and wish him a good afternoon."
"He's rather disgusted, but he is leaving."
I got right on the line to the security office as this whole thing didn't sit well.
"Andy, there's a guy just leaving the lobby that didn't track for Mrs Daniels. Try and find out whatever you can about him."
"On it boss."
"I caught the end of that Dennis. What do you think is going on?"
"No idea Stan, but whatever it is just didn't feel right. If he's legit we missed out on an opportunity, but like I said it didn't feel right."
Andy knocked on my door a few minutes later.
"Got the license plate from his car, but I already know it's a rental. Want me to see what the rental agency can tell me?"
"Give it a shot, but I'm not holding my breath."
