We had a while to wait before the plane even arrived, so we just sat there. When the plane did arrive a few people got off and then they started calling for people to board.
We waited our turn and then headed into the plane. When we got to our seats there was a mature woman seated in the middle seat with her tray table down doing some paperwork.
"Excuse me please, I'd like to get to my seat."
"Well, then you should move along to the back of the plane where you children belong."
"I can assure you ma'am that these are our seats."
"Don't be silly. Move along before I call an attendant."
This was just what I needed today, so I did her one better and pressed the call button myself.
One of the attendants was soon there, and the look on her face told me that she had already had enough of this particular passenger.
"Is there a problem here?"
"Yes, I'm afraid this passenger won't allow us to take our seats."
I handed her our tickets.
"Ma'am, these are indeed these gentlemen's seats. Please allow them to take them."
"That is unacceptable young lady. Seat them somewhere else."
"Ma'am. there isn't anywhere else. This flight is completely booked."
"Well, then they'll just have to take another flight."
"Unacceptable I'm afraid."
"Unacceptable? Just who do you think you are young man?"
"It doesn't matter who I am ma'am. I booked this flight for a reason and this is the flight I intend to be on."
"Ma'am. if you don't allow these gentlemen to take their seats, I'll have to have you removed from the flight."
"Removed!? Do you have any idea who I am young lady?"
"Who you are makes no difference Ma'am. You are disrupting the operations of this airline."
"Oh very well! But please don't disturb me."
The tray table was raised and I took my seat. Pete had the aisle seat as he needed a bit more shoulder room. We were soon in the air and the tray table was once again lowered and the woman went back to work.
We hit a bit of turbulence and as might be expected a few of the pages ended up in my lap.
I didn't intentionally look at the pages but one figure there jumped out at me.
"Damn. Sorry didn't mean to look at those."
"But you saw something nonetheless. Just what surprised you?"
"Unless whomever this is used some damned expensive equipment, or he's trying to write the depreciation off all at once. If I remember my accounting correctly, there are only a few instances that can be gotten away with, and without reading the whole packet I couldn't begin to tell you if he has met them. Not something I'd expect you to let me do."
"And you know this how?"
"It was part of the accounting and taxation courses I had to take for my broker certification."
"Then you are out of school?"
"I could have been, however, the Dean of Men convinced me that as long as I am going to be in the area this coming school year, I should take the core courses and get my associate in business."
"Well, I've heard that brokerage is a tough business to get into. I wish you luck, young man."
The rest of the trip proceeded in relative silence. When we landed Pete did offer her a hand up out of her seat. I got my case and Pete his overnight bag and we made our way to the baggage claim.
We got a cab to our hotel and got checked in. I called Karl once we were in our room.
"We made it safe and sound after a bit of a rough start."
"Rough start how Den?"
"There was a woman on the plane who was a bit of a 'Karen'. Think I impressed her when I saw something, completely by accident, that she was working on. After that, she got completely absorbed in her packet of information until we landed. Anyway, Pete and I are headed down for some lunch. I'll call you after the meeting in the morning. Love you."
"Love you more."
"A bit of a Karen? Hell Den I would have said she was the original."
"Be nice Pete. She really wasn't that bad, or else she'd still be trying to get to Chicago."
After a bit of lunch, Pete and I hit the pool for a little exercise after being on the plane for a few hours.
It was television for the rest of the afternoon and then down to supper.
After this, I got comfortable with a book while Pete watched more television.
"Think you have a shot at this Den?"
"I must have if they wanted to see me."
"I mean a real shot Den. This could just be a courtesy."
"It could be, but I don't think these folks have a lot of time to waste on curiosity or courtesy."
"Probably not. I'm sacking out."
It wasn't 11, but I sent a message to Karl anyway.
"Calling it a night, Love you always."
"Love you more. Good luck tomorrow"
I rolled over and went to sleep.
5:30 and I was awake. Pete was still crashed. I went down and got some breakfast and then it was back to the room to shower and shave.
"What do you think Pete? The dark blue or the charcoal gray?"
"The dark blue looks more business-like to me Den."
So the dark blue suit it was. I was soon dressed and buffed up the shoes a bit.
Pete had gotten dressed and pulled a sports jacket out of his bag.
"Where are you going, Pete?"
"With you dummy. I'm supposed to be watching your back remember? I can't do that if I'm not there. Don't worry, I'll stay out of the actual meeting."
"Really not necessary Pete."
"Maybe not, but I'm doing it anyway."
"Fine. Why don't you go grab some breakfast while I check things over one more time. I promise I won't leave without you."
"What time do you intend to leave here?"
"At 8. I want to be in their offices no later than 8:30. They said first thing and that means 9 to me."
"I'll be back in just a bit then."
Pete headed out and I sat down and reviewed things one more time. Pete was back in the room with 10 minutes to spare. We headed out and easily got a cab to the Bogda group offices.
I went to the front desk and told them who I was and we were taken to an elevator and rose into the building. Right at 8:30 Pete and I were shown into the reception area of the main office.
"Good morning Mr Sawyer. The officers will see you shortly. Can I get you anything?"
"No thank you."
It was about 20 minutes later that the young lady was called away from her desk and then shortly came and got me.
I was led into a conference room with several people there. They were obviously the Bogda group. I recognized Mr Adams as he stood.
"Welcome to Chicago Mr Sawyer. Please come in and have a seat. Are you bearing gifts?"
He had noticed the large sample case I had brought with me.
"Merely extra copies of the proposal if needed and copies of the building inspector report, which I hadn't yet received when last we spoke Mr Adams."
"And that inspector's report?"
"Is excellent. There are the usual cosmetic things to be addressed but they were likely to have been changed anyway."
At that point, I noticed that there was a vacant chair at the table, but didn't think much of it.
For the next hour, I answered all different kinds of questions. The population of the city, then the population by age group, and then by income. The location of the building to public transportation, traffic patterns in the area, and surrounding businesses. All things that I had answers for.
"Well Mr Sawyer you certainly have come prepared, a lot better than many other first-time presenters."
"Thank you Mr Adams, I try."
"You may have noticed an empty seat at our table today. It is our practice to have one of our members observe from a different room, so they can truly observe without being obvious about it."
It was then another door opened and who should walk in but the "Karen" from the plane.
Last week I left you folks a couple of URL's for AI renditions of Dennis and Karl. I've gotten a couple of emails saying that the folks couldn't get into the files. If this is the case for you, and you are still curious, drop me an email and I'll send you the files myself.
