"I'll dig into it Mr Sawyer and get back to you soonest."
"Thank you, Mr Benson. Have a good day."
The business day got underway and when the morning mail was delivered there was one very official-looking package. I opened it and found it to be the first rejection of my proposal. I wasn't too upset at that point. I didn't figure to get picked up first crack.
The day kept up a steady pace and eventually, the afternoon mail was delivered. It contained a couple of more packages similar to the first and as expected they were both rejections. Nicely worded to be sure but rejections nonetheless.
Stan happened to look into my office and saw the packages on my desk and the look on my face.
"The first rejections I take it?"
"Yeah from the investment banks. They say the proposal is 'interesting, but really not for them.' There's still a couple of more of the banks and the private groups to hear from."
"Well, here's hoping Dennis."
The afternoon wore on until the closing bell finally rang.
"Still nothing to get excited about that I could see Stan."
"Me neither. could be your gut is wrong this time."
"Always a possibility. Unless there's something else to discuss, I'll see you in the morning."
"Not a thing boss. Later."
I was just about to leave when I was paged to the phone.
"Ahh glad I caught Mr Sawyer. As far as the Browns are concerned there's nothing to worry about. Mr Brown senior is still serving his time and won't be eligible for parole for at least another 3 years. Joseph is still in the juvenile system as well. The therapist he is seeing says the boy is making good progress and should be a valued member of society when he does get released."
"Thank you for making the effort Mr Jenkins. Have a good night."
I got home a bit before Karl tonight and when he did come in, he could see I wasn't in the best of moods.
"Let me guess, the first rejections of the proposal came back today."
"Yeah, they did. Still a bunch of people to hear from though."
"Somebody will pick it up, lover."
"I hope so. Then again, the building inspector may find something major wrong with the building making the whole thing infeasible."
"Also a possibility, but I'm doubting it."
Mrs Ohanlon soon had supper on the table and afterward, Karl and I hit the pool. An hour in front of the TV and then it was off to bed.
The sun was up way too early on this Friday morning, and despite the brightness, I still had a feeling that something was going to happen.
Regardless, Karl and I got ourselves in gear and made it out to meet Aaron and Roland. Our laps were run without incident and Karl and I got back home.
"Just take it easy today Den, then you've got the whole weekend to relax."
"Yeah well, maybe after getting over to Edgeton and back."
"Skip a week."
"I could but that would leave Alex hanging, so not going to happen just because I'm a little stressed."
"Have it your way then Den."
We got cleaned up and had our breakfast and then headed out to work.
Stan was there when I got to the office, as usual.
"Didn't see anything in the overnights Dennis."
"Still can't shake the feeling though Stan."
"You could be wrong Dennis, and whose to say whatever it is necessarily has to be bad?"
"Always possible I suppose."
I went to my office and got myself set up for the day.
About 10:30 I noticed that Angelo was busier than a one-arm paper hanger. I went out and took the desk next to his.
"Shuffle me some."
I started answering calls for Angelo and they were all buy orders today and the majority of them were for someone called Zatarn Industries. The name sounded familiar and then I remembered. They were one of the contenders to pick up a lot of the Teramiedies commitments, and those long-term commitments were starting to come due.
Not the big happening I was expecting, but it would do. The rush kept up until just before lunch.
"Thanks for the hand, Mr Sawyer."
"Training is over. Can we get a little less formal, at least when we're not facing clients?"
"I suppose that we can Dennis."
"So, why do you think Zatarn took off today?"
"No idea really. I've not even heard rumors, and I have been listening."
While the whole thing was on my mind, I went and checked on Rastan Industries. They had been the ones to acquire a good deal of the Teramedies assets in the big sell-off.
I found that they were still holding their own very well. I decided to leave well enough alone and didn't transact any trades for myself.
The afternoon was not nearly as busy as it had been for Angelo this morning. I was back in my office by then.
The morning mail was sitting there on my desk and I decided I had better go through it. There was another package there and it too was a pass on the proposal. I did come across another official-looking envelope and when I looked at the return address, I found it was from the Commissioner's office.
Dear Mr Sawyer,
In accordance with our agreement, this letter is to inform you that our investigation into the incident involving your original testing is complete.
Details are still confidential at this time. I am at liberty to inform you that Mr Adams is no longer associated with this office or commission.
We request that should you be contacted by any media that you refrain from commenting.
Thanking you in advance,
Commissioner Harris.
So, there it was. A decision that would probably have more impact over my lifetime than anything that happened on the market. This didn't bode well for my final school year if Adams was still on campus.
Worry about that next month. I finished going through the mail and by that time the afternoon delivery came in. There was just the usual stuff there and I was quickly through it.
Stan poked his head into my office and saw the packages on my desk.
"Well, that takes care of the investment banks."
"You really didn't have high expectations there anyway Dennis."
"True enough but I can dream can't I?"
"Dennis, this is too good a deal. Somebody will pick it up I'm sure."
"Oh I have no doubt there is somebody out there that will jump on this. The question is if it is somebody I'm willing to do business with. I'm sure if Andros was still in the game he'd be on this like a hound to the fox."
"Undoubtedly, but I think I know you well enough to say that you aren't going to jump into this with just anybody."
"Damn right, I'm not. if I can get this done, It's something I intend to hold on to and not lose it to some corporation."
"I know Dennis. Guess you'll just have to hand in a bit longer."
"Not like I have a choice at this point. You see anything yet this afternoon to be concerned about?"
"Not a thing as yet. We've still got an hour to go."
"In which just about anything could happen."
I tried to keep an eye on everything for that hour, and nothing came across any of the feeds that warranted special attention. Finally, the closing bell sounded, and it being Friday, people shut down and got ready to call it a week.
"Looks like you were worried over nothing Dennis."
"So far, and I'm more than happy to be wrong."
"Usual time tomorrow boss?"
"Same as always Patrick."
Shortly after that, I was on my way home as well, hoping that nothing happened over the weekend.
Karl got home shortly after I did.
"Anything good happen today?"
"No, but then again nothing bad either."
"Guess that's about the best we can hope for."
We had our supper and once Mrs. Ohanlon was gone, adjourned to the pool for a while. Then it was to bed, but not to sleep even though I had a practice session in the morning.
A sunrise that seemed to come much too early for some reason.
Karl and I were up and out for our jogging with the guys and then back to the house to clean up and have breakfast.
We picked up Alex and were on our way to Edgeton. Normally an easy drive, but today traffic was heavy, which resulted in our running behind schedule.
We eventually got off the highway and headed into Edgeton proper. I had to pull over as fire engines came roaring up behind us.
"I hope they're in time to help whoever."
"Amen."
