"Guys, as pleasing an evening as that might be, I'm going to have to say no. First off we're married people now, second when all is said and done there will be comparisons made and nobody comes off well in those, and thirdly, I've got a meeting first thing in the morning that might turn into a multi-million dollar deal."
The disappointment was evident on both Gordon's and Aiden's faces.
"I guess I can understand that Den. Anything you can share on that deal?"
"I'm thinking about buying the old "Y" building and turning it into a workout center and gymnastic facility. The nearest facility is a couple of hours away."
"But aren't you giving it up after this next season?"
"Competing, yes, but I intend to stay connected to the sport. This does that for me if I can pull it off."
"What do you need to pull it off?"
"About $7.5 million."
"Damn!"
"Yeah, not something I'm going to be able to pull off alone. But I first have to find out if the building is worth having or if it's going to need a load of fixing up. So I go to look at it in the morning."
"That doesn't sound too stressful."
"Maybe not, but getting the real estate agent to take me seriously might well. How many guys my age do you think can scare up the $3 million they're asking for the building?"
"Yeah, I see your point. Have you put it to your dad?"
"Nope, though he has seen the proposal."
"Have you pitched it to my dad?"
"No, and I don't intend to Gordon. That would be taking advantage of a friend and not something I'm going to do. You lose friends that way."
"Yeah, I can appreciate that Den. Well, I suppose we ought to crash as we've got a drive to make tomorrow."
We all headed to bed but not before I left a note for Mrs Ohanlon that there'd be two more for breakfast.
Karl and I were soon to bed.
"Den, if you didn't have this thing in the morning?"
"I would still have said no and for just the reasons I stated."
"Think we'll ever get it on with other couples?"
"I'm doubting it like hell, but anything is possible. Let's get some sleep."
Monday morning and we were up with the sun, and so were Gordon and Aiden. We met the guys and got down to the track and got our laps in. We were headed back to the house when Dana pulled up to us.
"I got the BOLO canceled, but you guys please take it easy getting home."
"We will sir."
Dana took off and we got back home and Mrs Ohanlon was there with breakfast ready for the 4 of us.
"Mrs Ohanlon, I don't know if you got to meet them at the wedding, but I'm sure you've heard Karl and I speak of Gordon and Aiden."
"I 'ave, and welcome boyos."
"Thank you Mrs Ohanlon."
"They'll be heading out after breakfast so they won't be underfoot."
"Oh, not ta be worriyin aboot that."
We were soon fed and Karl and I got ready for work while Gordon and Aiden made sure they had everything.
We shared hugs with Gordon and Aiden before Karl headed out to work with his father.
"We'll see you guys in a couple of weeks. Drive safe."
"Good luck with this deal Den."
The guys headed off and I went and got my car and headed for the "Y" building.
When I got there, I saw several cars in the lot. I had thought I was getting a one-on-one tour of the place. I was making my way to the group when the realtor came forward.
"Mr Sawyer I presume?"
"You are correct."
"Well, we're just waiting for the building inspector before we get started."
None of the "suits" that were there deemed it necessary to introduce themselves. In fact, they looked at me as if to ask who the hell I was and what was doing at their meeting.
The inspector finally showed up and we all started through the building. I was making my own notes as were a few others. I didn't see much that was wrong with the building, but I was waiting for the inspector's report.
"On the surface, I don't see anything wrong with the building a little routine maintenance won't take care of. I'm going to need a couple of days to do a comprehensive study."
"Could I possibly get a copy of that report?"
"Of course Mr....?"
"Sawyer, Dennis Sawyer."
A simple statement that brought a couple of heads up for a look.
I handed him my business card.
"Of course Mr Sawyer. Anyone else?"
The guy ended up with a fistful of business cards.
The group broke up at that point and I headed to get some lunch before I hit the office.
"So how did the building look?"
"It appears to be in good shape, but I'm waiting for the building inspector's full report. That should take probably a week."
"Not going to leave you a lot of time to finish the deal before you head back to school."
"Yeah, I know. I'll probably have to work on it from there as well. I just hope I can manage the whole thing."
"Think you'll be needing the office up there for support?"
"Always a possibility."
"Should I give them a heads up?"
"No, I still want to go in there cold and see how things are handled."
"Your call boss. There wasn't anything in the overnights and it's been a pretty quiet day so far."
"And that's a good thing."
I headed into my office and checked to see if there had been any calls, and luckily I didn't.
I booted the computer and watched the markets and the news feeds for the rest of the afternoon. It stayed quiet right up to the closing bell, which was fine by me.
Stan and I got things finalized for the day and I headed home. I got there before Karl tonight and hit the pool. I was out and ready for supper by the time Karl showed up.
"So how does the building look?"
"On the surface, it appears to be in good shape, but I'm waiting to see the building inspector's full report."
"How long is that going to take?"
"I'm thinking about a week."
"You're going to be completing this deal from school lover."
"Looks that way."
"Wonder if you can get extra credit for that?"
"Hell, it might count somewhere. We'll just have to see."
My phone buzzed with a text message for me.
Just a heads up, we're home G.
"Looks like the guys made it home safe and sound."
"Well, that's good at least."
At which point we were called to supper.
After supper, we just crashed in front of the TV until we went to bed.
Tuesday morning and we were at it again. We met Aaron and Roland and started down to the track.
"So how did that building inspection go?"
"The place still looks to be in good shape, but I'm waiting on the inspector's report."
"Any bites yet on the rest of the proposal?"
"Not yet, but it's still a little early for that."
"Think you'll get it done before you head back to school?"
"Doubtful."
"That and the gymnastics is likely to make for one hectic year."
"Not like it's something I'm not used to. I'll make the time for everything."
"I don't doubt that, but what kind of shape will you be in when it's done?"
"I'll be fine, or dead on my feet. I leaning towards fine though."
We got back to our respective houses and Karl and I got ready for work.
I got to work and settled in for the day. Along about 10 my intercom buzzed.
"You have Dean Evans on line 2."
"Good Morning Dean Evans. No problems I hope?"
"Not problems persay Dennis. I'm just finishing up your classes for the upcoming year. I was just wondering what non-business electives you might be interested in?"
"I don't even know what's available. I'll leave it up to you sir, but please something easy that doesn't require a lot of time being invested. I have a feeling time is going to be at a premium this year."
"Yes, I suppose so with classes and gymnastics once again."
"Not to mention a business proposal I'm working on."
"That does sound a full plate. Is this anything that you will be looking for investors for?"
"Not unless they have very very deep pockets, sir."
"Well, that fairly well lets me out. I'll see what I can do for you on the electives, Dennis."
"Thank you, sir. I'll see you in a couple of weeks, sir."
I got back to work following the market and doing a bit of research as well.
It wasn't too much later when the intercom buzzed again.
"Harrison Bartlett on 4"
