When I opened the door you could have knocked me over with a sneeze. It was Gordon and Aiden, looking rather scruffy.
"Get your asses in here and call your dad, NOW!"
"Geez, hello to you too. What the hell Dennis?"
"Your dad called me wondering if I had heard from you. He's worried sick."
Gordon got a look across his face.
"He shouldn't be. We left him a note where he was sure to see it."
"Well, for whatever reason he didn't."
"We left the cell phones at home. We wanted to be unreachable for a while before we had to get back to school."
"Go into the office here and call him."
Which is what he did.
"Father...............yes we're fine.......................... I did. I left it on the dining room table...................... Really?...................... At Dennis and Karls.............. Yes, father day after tomorrow..........Yes, I love her too.......We will."
Gordon hung up and looked rather thoughtful.
"The note I left for my parents somehow went missing. Even more worrisome, they got a ransom demand last night."
"Damn near a week later?"
"Yeah Den, seems pretty weird to me."
"Me too, like somebody trying to take advantage of a situation."
"Which may well be why it took so long to set up. But unless mother and father made it public knowledge, that means it is likely that it is somebody on staff."
"Always a possibility I suppose, but with every agency in the law enforcement pantheon involved there had to be hundreds of people who knew."
"Yeah, I suppose so Karl, but how many knew we were just taking a breather? Well, let Father worry about that. We've got the rest of today and tomorrow to kick back."
"So where the hell did you guys go that you weren't found?"
"A little mountain hideaway that Aiden found online. You guys were on the route back so we thought we'd stop and say hi."
"You guys know you're welcome at any time."
"Yeah we know Den, but we don't want to wear out our welcome either."
"That would be damn hard to do."
At which point there was a knock at the door. I went and checked, and it was Dana Penbrose.
"Dana, what's up?"
"There's a BOLO out for that car in your driveway. I need to speak to the driver."
"Come on inside Dana. Aiden, this is Officer Pembrose. Please cooperate with him."
I showed them both back to the office.
"What the hell Den?"
"There was a lookout issued for Aidens car. SOP for law enforcement when somebody goes missing. Don't worry about Officer Pembrose, he's one of the good ones."
"This is the guy you kept calling when something came up?"
"Yeah, it is. I trust him, Gordon."
It was about 20 minutes before they came out of the office.
"Mr Bartlett, if you please."
Gordon headed into the office with Dana.
It was only 10 minutes before Dana and Gordon came out of the office.
"I'll call everyone who needs to know so you guys don't get hassled all the way home. Regardless take it easy, and if you should get pulled over just roll with it. Sometimes not everybody gets the word in a timely manner."
"Thanks, Dana. Kinda makes me wonder how you guys got here without being spotted."
"There was a lot of traffic Den, probably hard to spot the plates."
"Probably, so what do you guys want to do tonight?"
"Well, after we clean up, how about an early dinner, and then we hit Club Mann, our treat?"
"Sounds like a plan to me."
I showed them to my old bedroom, so they had their own bathroom and the king-size bed rather than two doubles.
The four of us piled into the Toyota and Gordon found my newly framed license.
"Hey, good on you Den. This makes tonight a celebration then."
"Yeah I guess, but it doesn't get you out of jogging with us in the morning. That will surprise the hell out of Aaron and Roland."
We hit a fairly decent restaurant and had a leisurely supper and then made our way over to Club Mann. All four of us stayed with nonalcoholic beer tonight.
The dancers, as well as the waiters, were all hot and Jason was still there and gave our table a little extra attention. We didn't stay for the second show and were home by a little after 11.
Sunday morning and when we got up, I could hear that Gordon and Aiden were up and getting ready as well. Soon enough we were out and made our way up to Aaron's house. They had all met at the wedding so there was no need for introductions. We were only waiting on Roland and he showed up just a few minutes later,
"Damn, we weren't expecting to see you two."
"Spur of the moment trip Aaron. So, let's get this done."
So it was down the street and the laps around the track and them back to the houses. We all got cleaned up and Karl and I started to head over to his house as usual for breakfast with the family. Naturally, Gordon and Aiden started to follow us.
"Did you...."
"Before we even left for dinner last night."
When we got inside Gert and Stan were right there to welcome us all.
"Gordon, Aiden, good to see you boys again."
"Thank you sir and thank you for having us over."
"So has it been a good summer?"
"It has. We're just on the way home from a week of getting away from it all, and decided to stop and see the guys."
"Then you'll be heading out tomorrow?"
"Yes sir. We need to get home and get things together for the next school year."
"Something you and Dennis should be thinking about Karl."
"We left just about everything in the apartment Dad. All we really need to bring are some clothes and our computers."
"So what are you boys going to be up to today?"
"Hadn't given it much thought yet."
"How about we surprise Paul and Cam with these two?"
"Probably the last thing they would expect."
At the mention of Cam and Paul's names, Bobbie got a hopeful look.
"Yes, you can come as well Bobbie, if it's alright with your parents."
"Fine by us Dennis."
Breakfast was quickly finished and Bobbie went and got his boots and rough clothes. We all made our way over to my place and into the Toyota and we were on our way to the state park.
When we got to the stables, we kept Gordon and Aiden hidden behind us until we had both Paul and Cam's attention.
"5 for the two-hour ride."
"Where's the other 2?"
"Right here!"
Gordon and Aiden stepped out from behind us.
"Hot Damn! The crew is back together!"
There was a bit of mutual back-slapping and a bit of catching up, but we were eventually saddled up and headed out on the ride.
The trail hadn't changed since last year, but that was fine with us. We tried to keep Bobbie in between Karl and me.
The scenery was as beautiful as ever and we completed the ride without any mishaps.
We did stop and talk a bit with the guys after riding.
"So, only a couple of more weeks and we'll all be back at the grind again."
"Yeah, and it's the last year for Karl and I."
"And then only one more for Aiden and me."
"We've still got three to go. I don't know about Cam, but I'm not really looking forward to it."
"You think I am? It's going to be a hell of a lot of work."
"You know damn well it will be worth it in the end guys."
"I know. Doesn't mean we have to like it. See you guys in a coupla weeks."
We stopped for our lunch and then made our way back to the house. The afternoon was spent horsing around in the pool with Gordon and Aiden.
Supper was had with Karl's family and then we were back over to the house. We all crashed on the couch in front of the TV.
Nothing was said for a while but it looked to me like Gordon and Aiden had something on their minds.
"Guys, what's going on?"
"Weeeellllllllll......We were wondering if you guys would like to make the evening......interesting?"
"Interesting how, as if I really need to ask."
"Fine, do I really have to come out and say it?"
"Yep."
"OK, we'd like to switch partners for the evening."
Karl just looked at me.
