Mr. Adams was the last one into the room and he searched it and when his eyes landed on me, he got this evil look on his face.
I briefly considered saying something to the other proctors but decided that would only cause trouble.
For now, I had to put Adams out of my mind and concentrate on taking the exam.
By the time I was done, I felt like I had taken every final over the last two years again.
When I was done I turned in my test to one of the proctors, not Mr Adams.
"Ah, Mr Sawyer. It will be good seeing a Sawyer back at the company's helm."
"Thank you, Mr?"
"Mr Thomas. Have yourself a good remainder of the day, Mr Sawyer."
"Thank you, sir, you as well."
I made my way back to my car and then on to the house.
"Well?"
"It was worse than taking our finals, but I think I did pretty well. I did get a little bit of a shock when I got there though."
"Oh?"
"Yeah, Adams was one of the proctors."
"Did he give you any grief?"
"No, but I can't help but feel he had something set up."
"Did you mention it to anyone?"
"I thought about it, but decided that it would make more trouble than it would clear up, not to mention that I could be wrong."
"Yeah, I can see where somebody might consider it sour grapes."
"Well, it's out of my hands now. I can only sit and wait."
"How long should that take?"
"Only a couple of weeks I think."
"So, now what?"
"Now I go to work on getting a business plan together and see if I can raise a few million dollars."
"Can that wait until tomorrow at least?"
"Absolutely it can."
We spent the rest of the day just relaxing with each other.
Wednesday morning and we got into the routine once again. When I got to the office Stan was already there.
"So, how did it go?"
"I think I did fine, but there is a concern."
"Oh?"
"Mr Adams was there and I can't help but feel he had something going on."
"Proof?"
"None, just a feeling and the way he looked at me."
Stan got thoughtful for a few seconds.
"I can't really see any way for him to mess with your test."
"I can think of a couple. He could substitute a completely screwed-up test for mine, or simply see that it gets lost before it ever gets to the full board."
"Either one would be hard to pull off."
"Maybe, I don't know. Is there anything to be done about it now or do I have to wait it out?"
"You are going to have to wait it out. There is an appeal process available, but you have to wait until the results are in."
"A couple of weeks right?"
Stan turned and looked at his calendar.
"Yeah, I'd say by the 12th of next month."
"It's going to be a long two weeks. Anything in the overnights?"
"Nothing to worry about."
I went into my office and got myself set up for the day. After the morning pep talk, I went to work devising a business plan for the gym and gymnastics center. I researched the costs more thoroughly and worked out a budget, a staffing plan, and a rough floorplan and laid out what my goals were. Before I knew it I heard the closing bell.
Stan came to my office at that point.
"Pretty regular day. How are you making out?"
"I think I have it all written, just have to tie it all together."
"Well that's for tomorrow I would guess."
"Pretty much so yeah."
"So go be with your husband."
Which is what I did. I beat Karl home tonight though.
It was soon after that Karl came through the back door.
"How was your day?"
"Busy. Seems Rusty Acres is due to reopen soon and they are going through us to help fill their staffing needs."
"Well, at least they are reopening. I'm sure we will be going there for Christmas this year."
"Probably. How did your day go?"
"I pretty much got the business plan written in pieces, I just have to pull it together."
"So, going to start making the rounds on Monday?"
"If I can get appointments, yeah."
"I'm doubting like hell it will be difficult for you to get the appointments love. Getting approved will be the hard part."
"Don't I know it."
At which point they were called to supper.
The rest of the evening was spent in each other's arms before calling it a night and crashing out.
Thursday dawned wet and windy so they didn't go jogging today. So it was a long leisurely shower and they were out to breakfast.
"How was the driving this morning Mrs Ohanlon?"
"The roads be a bit slick. Saw a few fender benders on me way in."
"so, give it a little extra time this morning and probably on the way home as well."
"Oh, I fully intended to lover."
Soon enough Karl was out the back door and I was out to the garage. I took the sedan today simply because of the rain.
I made it into work without a problem and of course, Stan was there already.
"Anything interesting in the overnights?"
"Nothing that raised any flags."
"Good, let's hope things stay that way."
I went to my office and got right to work putting the business plan in order. By noontime, I had it the way I wanted it and printed it out, and made a few digital copies as well.
I still didn't have a secretary, so I slipped next door to Stan's office. Mrs Hines was still there.
"Mrs Hines, do we have a way to make a multitude of copies and to have them bound?"
"Not in house Mr Sawyer. We do have a contract for services with the printers just down the street. How many copies would you need?"
"Let's start with 30."
I expected that I would have to make many stops.
"I imagine they will need the weekend to get it all done."
"Very good. Have one of the folks from shipping run it over there please."
"Of course. How would you like them bound?"
"Plain business-type folder please."
"I'll see to it, sir."
I headed back to my office and started following the markets, as I still wasn't allowed to actually make trades.
I reviewed my own portfolio at that point, to see how things were going. Also to see what I might want to sell off to fund this project if it came to that.
Eventually, the closing bell sounded and everyone shut down their machines and got ready to head home. I went and checked in with Stan.
"Pretty standard day Dennis."
"Then I guess it's time to head home with everybody else."
The ride home was a bit easier than the ride in as the roads had dried considerably. Once again I was home before Karl.
"Anything happen around here today Mrs Ohanlon?"
"Nothin t'all. Dinner will be ready just as soon as Mr Karl be coming through the back door."
Which didn't leave me any time to hit the pool.
Karl was soon enough home and we had our supper and after Mrs Ohanlon had left we did go for a swim.
After we dried out it was an hour or so in front of the TV and then we sacked out.
Friday morning and it was clear and dry, so the usual routine kicked in. We ran our laps were run and Karl and I were back at the house.
"So when are you going to start trying for interviews Den?"
"Not until I have copies of the business plan in hand, which should be early next week."
"So why don't you try to set them up now?"
"Because with my luck, I'd set the interviews and the printer wouldn't have them ready for me, which would make me look pretty incompetent."
"And a sure way not to get the funding."
"Precisely."
We ate, then headed out to work.
I pulled in and Stan was once again there ahead of me.
"Overnights?"
"Were quiet and Europe doesn't seem to have woken up yet."
"Or they're awake and watching. Anything in the news that might have an effect?"
"Not that I've seen and no high-level meetings that I can find."
"Definitely going to be an eyes-open day I think."
"I agree."
I went to my office and set up my computer to keep me informed, Though I did intend to keep a close eye anyway.
The morning pep talk gave everyone the same message.
Lunchtime came and went without anything out of the ordinary happening. The afternoon rolled on through 1, 2, and 3 o'clock without anything major happening. By the time we hit 4, I thought we were safe.
I was wrong.
