"I've looked at your file Dennis, and it occurs to me that if you returned to us next year and took some core courses, you could also earn your associate of business. I know you intend to be in the area for Karl's senior year."
"Not something I had thought about."
"Well please consider it. I must admit I have a more personal reason for suggesting it. It would also allow you to stay on the gymnastics team. I like seeing us win Dennis and it looks good for the school as well."
"I'll certainly give it due consideration sir. When do I need to decide?"
"I can let you slide on it until the middle of July, but no further."
"Let me get through finals and the all-state and I'll let you know soonest."
"Fair enough. Now get and I assume you will be heading over to practice?"
"You assume correctly sir, right after I get some lunch."
"Then off with you."
I headed out to the student union and even before I got my lunch Bob Watson found me.
"Any news today Dennis?"
"Actually yes there is."
I told him just exactly what the Dean had told me.
"There's got to be more to it than that Dennis?"
"Maybe, but you know all that I know at this point."
"I don't suppose it will do me any good to try and talk to the Dean or your other instructors?"
"I'm pretty much doubting that will get you anything, Bob."
"Well, that doesn't leave me with much of a story then."
"Sorry about that."
"I'll make something out of it all."
"Just as long as it's the truth and doesn't slant anything, Bob. I don't need to be in the spotlight again."
"Hey, just because I write it doesn't mean it's going to get printed. I still have an editor I have to answer to."
"Then lay on McDuff."
I got my lunch after that and then headed on over to the rec center and got changed up. I was out on the floor and stretching out when the coach came up to me.
"Dennis, I can see it in your stance. This whole thing with the instructor has worked itself out hasn't it?"
"It has and I have little doubt that I shall pass all of my courses and be in good standing for the all-state."
"Outstanding! Be sure and let the word get around. I know a good many of the guys are worried for you."
"I'm sure if you noticed that they will as well coach."
It was once again an open practice so it was only doubles thrown today, but anybody with eyes could see that I was putting a lot more into them than I had the last few sessions.
I finished my rotations and then headed for the pool and eventually the whirlpool. Jack and Dana were there when I got there.
"You sure as hell looked like your old self out there today Den."
"Yeah, well that situation with the instructor got itself ironed out today so I'm feeling a whole lot better Jack."
"Well, then that answers that question."
"Which question is that Dana?"
"Why Adams was walking around with more than his usual scowl this morning."
"Why don't I like the sound of that?"
"Yeah, I pity any of his other students for the rest of the year and through finals for that matter."
"I don't think his students are going to have anything to worry about Dana. I'm betting that there are going to be too many eyes on him for some time to come."
"What makes you think so Den?"
"Just something that Dean Evans said to me, which I will not repeat."
"Nuff said Den. So that means we're all good for the all-state?"
"As far as I'm concerned, yeah."
"Yeah, while I'm thinking of it Den, we're each going to have our own rooms this year for the time before we leave for the all-state. We need to move into those rooms on Friday after we finish our finals. As far as getting the guys together to do stuff, the coach says it can only be done on an informal basis. That means you can tell somebody what you're up to and they can join you if they want."
"It was a good thought at least and we might still get some of the guys together for doing stuff."
We all soaked for a few minutes more. After showering up and changing I went outside and found a place to make a call.
"What can I do for you today Dennis?"
"Just a heads up Stan. That whole thing with Adams has come to a head. He got pulled from my class. Reports are that he has been walking around with an even bigger scowl on his face than usual. I also think he is going to be kept a close watch on by the administration here. All of which leads me to think that he is once again going to be all over anything the company or I have to say about anything."
"Yeah, not like we haven't had to deal with it before. We'll keep an eye out Dennis. You just get through the year."
"That I don't think is going to be a problem Stan. Take care and I'll see you in a little over a month."
"Take care, Dennis."
I went and checked over the car and then headed back to the apartment. Karl was already there when I got there.
"So anything today lover?"
"Oh yeah. Adams has been replaced and with one of the Board of Governors no less."
"And what about Adams's future here at the school?"
"Still under consideration at this point. I'm betting he is going to be closely watched for the rest of this year if not beyond at the very least."
"Crap, he is going to become your new Larry Brown."
"More than likely. Dean Evans put something on the table today that we need to think about."
"Do I really want to know?"
"I think so. He suggested that while I'm here next year with you I take the core courses I haven't and get my associate of business degree to go along with my certification."
I could see the wheels turning in Karl's head even though he didn't say a word.
"That would mean you'd be eligible for the gymnastics team again."
"That's right. He likes the idea of us winning."
"Yeah, I can see where that looks good for the school. Probably doesn't hurt the budget either. So, are you seriously considering it?"
"It does deserve the consideration doesn't it?"
"Of course it does Den. When do you have to decide?"
"I've got until the middle of July."
"Good then, not a decision that has to be made right away."
"Yeah, I told Dean Evans that I wanted to get through the end of the year before I made that decision."
"OK then. Let's eat."
We had our meal and got things cleaned up. It was once again one of those rare evenings when neither of us had anything to do. So, we crashed in front of the TV until it was bedtime.
Friday morning was once again a bright one and we were up and over to campus. All of the guys were waiting for us when we got there.
"Den, you're smiling. What the hell?"
"Aiden, the whole thing with Adams is resolved, at least as far as I am concerned. He was replaced by one of the Board of Governors no less."
"Well, damn that is something to smile about."
"Yes, it is, now let's get this in gear."
We got our laps done and Karl and I got back to the apartment to get ready for the day. I only had to go in for the tax course today. So I got a few things cleaned up around the apartment and then headed into class.
Mr McEmbers just smiled at me when I entered the room. The class was gotten through and I stepped down to talk to Mr McEmbers.
"I'm sorry Dennis but I couldn't say anything to you."
"I understand. Is there anything more you can tell me other than what Dean Evans had to say?"
"I don't have anything other than Mr Wells is taking over the class and that Mr Adams's future here at the college is still under consideration."
"Yeah, that's all I've gotten as well. I'm done for the day. I'll see you next week."
"I on the other hand still have classes to get to Dennis. Take care."
Just because I knew people would be looking for me, I went over to the student union and got my lunch.
Pete and Susan were the first to show up and they were given the news. Carlton and Devon got the word as well. Once the usual time came for me to hit the risk/rewards class I headed back to the apartment.
I started something for supper and waited for the closing bell. I then got to work plugging in the closing values of all of my holdings and let the spreadsheet do the math.
I wasn't going to go and do half the job, so I charted not only the whole portfolio but each stock or mutual fund I had invested in. Just before Karl pulled in I set the printer to working.
Ok, folks who thinks Den should go for his associate's degree?
Also Happy New Year to all
