Saturday morning and we were up but not to go jogging. I did a quick once around of the apartment to make sure nothing had been left on or forgotten to be put away.
Soon enough it was time to head for the airport. I gave us plenty of time to get the car into longterm parking and get through security and whatnot. I had booked us first class seating once again so we had the room to really relax.
Late afternoon and we landed in Vegas. It took us a little by surprise when we got off of the plane and into the terminal, there were slots there waiting for us already. Was the temptation there to play one? Sure there was but we knew if we won anything we wouldn't be allowed to keep it as we were underage here. Hell, with my luck I'd spend the week in the lockup.
It took us a while to get our luggage and then out to the car rental place. I programmed the GPS for our hotel and we were off. Even with traffic, it only took us about 20 minutes to get to the Strip and our hotel.
Once we checked in, we started to look around the place to see just what there was for us to do tonight. We did try to avoid the actual casino areas, and when we did have to cross one to get somewhere we saw what had to be plain clothes security watching us.
We eventually found one of the "lesser" eateries and got ourselves some supper. I just wasn't willing to pay the exorbitant prices someplace like one of the celebrity chefs demanded.
After supper we checked out a couple of the nearby hotels for thier "trademarks". The volcano at the Mirage was certainly busy tonight. The fact that you could feel the ground rumble even clear across the street was surprising to me.
Just the way the buildings were done up was enough to keep us looking. The Venetian with its gondolas right there on the Strip was a sight to see, for me at least. The fact that the statuary out in front of Ceasers Palace were pristine surprised me as well. I suppose "tagging" any of that at anytime during the day or night would have been damn near impossible and not get caught at it.
We weren't out too late tonight as we planned to just walk the Strip from end to end on Sunday. We were only going to look at the buildings for the most part and if something grabbed us then we would stop and take a look. Basically the Strip is a little over 5 miles from the Strat to Mandalay Bay. Not a problem for two healthy young guys. We still crashed early as we intended to get an early start.
When we got up on Sunday morning, we saw a lot of folks just making their way in as we were headed out for breakfast. We retraced our steps from last night down past the Venetian along the Strip. I won't bore you with all of the hotels and the little things along the way, but I did have a collection of pictures of all of the front of the buildings and a few interior shots as well. I had heard about a few of the "trademarks" such as the aquarium behind the checkin at one place that ran the entire length of the counter, and the hand blown glass that decorated the lobby of another, not to mention the Bellagios fountains.
It was early evening by the time we made it back to our room and tomorrow was the all day canyon trip. So it was to bed early and then in the morning a quick breakfast and into the car to get to the place where the tour started from. The bus was clean and air conditioned and we were off. We didn't actually stop at Hoover Dam, but I did get some good pictures of it. It was on into the canyon and the sights were everything I remembered them to be. Karl was a little slack jawed at the whole thing. When the sun set the colors all around the canyon deepend and it was certainly a sight to see. Soon it was back on the bus for the return trip to Vegas.
Tuesday morning we slept in a bit. The afternoon however was booked. This afternoon was going to be a real experience, expensive, but well worth it to the both of us.
It was the exotic car driving experience. Our reservations were for 1pm. So it was a light lunch and into the car and south on Las Vegas Blvd.
We arrived and checked in, got the safety briefing, had our class room instruction and our 2 lap orientation drive. Now these were some really high end cars that we had the option of driving. I went for the Lamborghini Huracan and Karl went for the Gallardo. Could I afford to buy one of these cars? Yeah, but really, where would I drive one at full tilt? Besides, I was still having fun driving the Triumph when I was home.
We were fitted with helmets and were soon enough on the track. Karl and I had gotten the ten lap package, and by the time we had gotten to the 5th lap the in car instructor was pretty relaxed with my driving. Having taken a course when I finished rebuilding the Triumph paid off here. I didn't set any track record, but I had the best time of the day at 59.7 for the 1.3 mile track. Karl was only a little slower at 59.9.
We took a while after, and took a number of pictures with the other cars that were available, ranging from a Corvette C8 to a McClaren GT4.
Needless to say, racing the gokarts back at the arcade at home was never going to be the same again. So back to the hotel to relax for a few hours before going out for the night.
Tonight was going to be special as far as I was concerned. It was Mr Las Vegas himself. Wayne Newton was performing at the Flamingo. Blame my parents, but I had always enjoyed seeing Mr Newton perform on tv. From his earliest appearances on shows like I Love Lucy (still in reruns or streaming today) right on through to the rare appearance today.
We were right up front for this show and we enjoyed every minute of it. When a performer appears to be having a good time providing a good time for others, well that's when some of their best work got done. Wayne did that for me.
Wednesday morning it was a bit overcast, so Karl and I hit the gym/spa facility. This afternoon was for the Adventure Dome at Circus Circus, and then over to the Strat. This evening for the Fremont Street Expirience.
The AdventureDome was just to satisfy the big kids in us and some of the rides were adventurous enough, but better yet it was all inside so we didn't have to put up with the heat.
We walked on over to the Strat as it really wasn't that far. It was the tallest tower of its kind and looked down the entire length of the strip. Worth the price just for that to me as my camera got a workout. But then it was the rides here as well.
I mean where else can you jut out over the edge of a hotel and look the passing helicopter pilot right in the eye?
After we had our fill of this, we headed back to the car and made our way downtown and found a place to park. It was just starting to get dark out so we had timed this pretty well.
We decided to take the zipline from one end of the experience to the other and then walk back towards where we had parked. I had booked this one in advance(always a good thing to do with anything in Vegas if possible). We had a 7 pm boarding time for the Super Hero Zoom. 11 stories up and about 1700 ft long. There were several safety briefings before we got to ride and we went all the way to in front of the Golden Gate hotel at the other end of Fremont Street.
We took our time making our way back the length of Fremont Street. Mr Castanza had warned us that all types of things happened in Vegas. He certainly must have had Fremont Street in mind. To say that there was a fair amount of flesh on display would have been and understatement. We took our time and stopped to look in several of the gift shops.
Once we got back to the car it was about 10.
"Karl, head back to the room or try and see something else?"
"What's close?"
"The Mob Museum, and the Neon Museum and Boneyard, that I know of. I think the Pawn Stars shop is around here somewhere as well."
"It's already, what 10? It's going to take us a while to get back to the hotel and no telling what the traffic is like on the Strip itself. Let's call it a night. Afterall you were the one worried about showing up back to school more wiped out than when we left."
"Ok back to the room."
So it was back to the room and crashing out.
Thursday morning we relaxed and got ready for two different shows tonight. But first we made our way over to the Linq and rode the High Roller observation wheel. Again the camera got a workout. While we were here also hit their zipline.
Back to our room for a quick clean up and then down the Strip to the Tropicana for the Rich Little show. Afterwards we got a quick bite and then crossed the street to the MGM and into see David Copperfield. Magic had always fascinated me and he was one of the best.
Friday morning we relaxed a bit and spent sometime at the pool. This afternoon we headed towards the Hard Rock Cafe and the Flyover Vegas attraction. We had booked the double ride and went with the Windborne:Call of the Canadian rockies option.
From here it was up the Strip to Excalibur for the evening as we had booked both the Tournament of Kings and Thunder from Down Under. It was late by the time we got back to the room.
Saturday morning we got ourselves packed up and checked out of the room. That didn't mean we done though. Our flight out tonight wasn't until 10pm, so we still had the day and half the night to fill. Our bags were in the car and we headed for the South end of the Strip. We had it in mind to hit the roller coaster at New York New York, Then over to the Luxor, just to look around, and finally over to Mandalay Bay for the Shark Reef Aquarium.
We grabbed a quick bite to eat and then made our way back to Planet Hollywood for one last show. We went to see Piano Man, which was a tribute show to Elton John.
Just as soon as that was over we hurried on out to the airport and got the car returned and on through security and finally to our gate with a little time to spare. There had been weather delays all along the west coast so our flight was late getting in and subsequently we were late getting out. The wait was worth it though as we had a spectacular view of the Strip all lit up as we took off.
By the time we were pulling into the driveway at the apartment, the sky was lightening with the dawning of Sunday morning.
Since I commited to this storyline, I have since found out that you need to be 21 to even get a room in Vegas these days. So, it IS fiction and I ask that you just roll with it. Thanks.
