The guys from Dresmere got off the bus and we greeted them all. They were a pretty closed mouth bunch of guys. I did look them over and noticed that the two from last year weren't amongst the group. Pretty much confirmed to me that they had been in somebodies pocket last year.
We let them get their rooms and stuff sorted out. I headed for tha apartment to make an early night of it.
"So I'm sure the bus got here?"
"It did and they were a damn quiet crew when they got off of it."
"So what do you think their game is?"
"To leave it all on the floor tomorrow. I expect they will be taking chances they shouldn't in hopes of beating us."
"You guys got this covered right?"
"Yeah almost everybody has a a triple somewhere in at least one of their routines, and damn few of them have been thrown in competition so far."
"Let'd hope you don't have to be used and you guys are able to save something for the all state."
"That's going to up to the coach. He told us only to throw them on his say so, at least the ones that aren't already known about."
"Everybody looking to coach is going to have them wondering I bet."
"Hmmmmm maybe we can use that against them a little."
"How so?"
"Everybody looks to coach all of the time and we don't throw a triple or something, makes them wonder just how much we do have in reserve. That can play with their heads a bit."
"I doubt like hell coach will let you get away with a move like that Den."
"So do I."
"Might just as well put the schemes out of your head love. I doubt like hell your coach would go for any of them."
"Probably not. Supper just about ready?"
"Yeah just a few."
We had our supper and then just laid back before calling it an early night.
Bright and early Karl was up for his jogging and I was over to the team breakfast. Neither team had anything to say this morning, but if looks could have killed we would have been hurting.
We gathered in the locker room while waiting for our warm up.
"Dennis, impressions?"
"They're out for blood coach. I saw something in their eyes this morning."
"My thoughts exactly. They're trying to throw us. They've requested that we run this meet team format. That means I'll be able to be right there with you guys the whole time. So no looking to me for your triples today. Do the high bar and the floor and save the other two. I'll advise all of the other guys as things stand. We may not have to use them all and we'll have something left for the all state."
"Whatever you say coach."
We ended up going out for our warmup and then we were off the floor while the people were let in.
We had the opening ceremonies and got started. We moved first to the Pommel Horse. Running team format as we were I was able to watch everybody do their routine, but not the Dresmere team as they had started on the vault. I could have watched them when I wasn't actually on the mat, but I chose not to. Coach had given me my instructions and I wasn't going to even try to second guess him.
So it was on to the vault for us and coach had several of the guys that had them here do their triples. Everybody, as far as I could see, was right on with them.
On to the high bar, where coach had Greg, Josh, and I throw our triples. We all did well with them and the other guys did their own routines well to boot.
Parrallel bars seemed to go smoothly for us all as well, and then it was on to rings. Here Coach picked a couple of the guys to hit their triples and the rest of us did our standard routines.
It was late into the afternoon now and all we had left to do was the floor. Here I was going to go last. Everybody was once again right on with their routines and there were a couple of other triples thrown here.
I stepped up to my starting position. I did my opening moves and set up for my first tumbling run. I moved through that with a double at the end, On to the floor work, once again remembering to keep my toes pointed. I set up for my second tumbling rum, again ending with a double somersault. More floor and flair work and the set up for my final tumbling run. I saw each move in my mind and executed them, on across the mat I moved and finally it was up into the triple. I spotted my landing and set my feet without so much as a wobble. A few more floor moves and I was done.
Now I could look at the scoreboard. Dresmere was in the middle of their last rotation, the highbar. I watched closely and it was obvious that they all had a triple for the highbar. I scanned the board and did the math, and it was too close to call.
I waited with everyone else as the last guy from Dresmere did his highbar routine. He had a fairly good routine and it was obvious he was going to throw a triple dismount as everyone else had. He was up and into the first and then the second, and the third somersault. He landed and not only stepped out of the landing, but stumbled another two steps before landing on his knees.
The guy was going to loose major points for that, but would it be enough for us to win the meet?
It seemed like it took hours for that final score to be posted, but was really only minutes. Dresmere had beaten us by the slimmest of margins. Their people took the floor as we all were at the sidelines.
Karl and the others were soon enough there by my side.
"You can't win them all lover."
"No but it would have been nice. Let me go get showered and changed, see these guys off and then we can get a late lunch/early dinner."
When the awards had been completed we all trooped back to the locker room, to be surprised by there being a setup for urine testing. Not something usually done at the meets unless requested.
"I just this minute found out guys. The officials knew this was kind of a grudge match so thought this was called for."
I had no worries about our team, but if Dresmere had doped up, well that would sure as hell give the meet to us. Was I hoping for it? Not really. I could well put up with them beating us fair and square.
We got showered up and made our way over to Cochran hall to see the Dresmere team off. They didn't seem any more talkative now that they had beaten us then when they arrived. In fact they look positively glum. Did they know something we didn't? Only time would tell.
"We're right here Karl, hit the cafeteria?"
"Yeah I suppose."
We walked over to Ingram hall. We had only just sat down when we were joined by the whole group.
"Tough luck Den."
"Yeah well shit happens. Dresmere needs to do that again for their last meet to even be eligible for the all state. Now we just have to concentrate on Olivette and I have no idea what kind of season they're having."
"I'm sure coach will know Den."
"I'm sure he will Paul. So I wasn't watching anybody right until the very end. Anybody any idea where they had us beat?"
"I think just the fact that they were throwing triples all over the place, no matter how badly they were landed."
"So just the fact that they were trying a little harder. They do make it to the all state and they get those triples under themselves and they may be serious contenders."
"May be Den, but why didn't the coach let you use your other two triples today? It sure as hell would have carried the meet."
"He's saving them Pete. Just like he didn't have everybody throw all of their triples today. Oh yeah, we probably could have taken the meet, but that would have left us without any 'reserve' for the all state. We're locked in regardless at this point so why give up the advantage?"
"I suppose I can see the point. Would have been nice to go in undefeated though."
"Yeah it would but as far as I know, there isn't anyone undefeated this season, now."
We soon enough finished eating and then headed back to the apartment. I hit the books for a bit and then Karl and I had a late snack and then called it a night.
Sunday and the routine kicked in again and we were over to campus for our laps with the guys, and then back to the apartment for the day. We showered up and had our breakfast and then hit the books for a while.
I checked my email at some point during the day, and there was one there from Drake of all people.
Sorry to hear about the loss yesterday. I know you guys will do better next time.
I quickly messaged back.
They didn't get us by much and it does happen even to the very best. Say hi to dad for me and hopefully we will see you for the all state.
Before we knew it Paul and Cam had pulled in and it was downstairs for supper. Naturally talk turned to the meet.
"So just the luck of the game Dennis?"
"I suppose you could put it that way Mr Castanza. We could have done more, but coach is holding that as a strategic reserve for the all state."
"Yes I do suppose keeping them guessing is part of the game."
It was pretty much just general conversation until the end of dinner and getting things cleaned up before we headed back upstairs for the evening.
"Dennis, are we going to do anything for spring break? We've only got a couple of weeks before we're there."
Ok folks. Some of you have been after me for some time now to get another story going. Well I'm happy to say that it has finally happened.
In the Adult Friends section you will now find "721 Anderson Avenue."
I don't intend to be as prolific there as I am here as this story is my primary concern. I will try and post there every couple of weeks.
I hope you enjoy it.
