I went down and got in Karls car and let him drive me to the infirmary. It was a quick clean out and a bandage and a warning that if I started to feel dizzy or anything not to hesitate to come back.
"It's late Karl. Let's just grab some burgers and call it a night."
"Works for me."
We hit the first franchise we came to and made our way back to the apartment. After eating I just did a quick review of my imaginary portfolio and then my real one as well.
"You at a point you can stop Den?"
"Yeah."
"Then shut it down and go put your feet up."
"I feel fine Karl."
"Maybe so, but you're taking it easy for the rest of the night. No argument."
"Yes dear."
So I went to the couch and put my feet up while Karl took care of everything else until we crashed for the night.
Thursday morning and we were up and out once again. Karl really didn't want me to go jogging this morning but I insisted. If I couldn't get through that, I had no business trying to go and do a workout of any kind after the practicum.
We got to Cochran Hall and of course the guys noticed the bandage right away.
"Lovers spat?"
"Drone attack, which was an accident."
"You sure about that Den?"
"Reasonably so Paul. Couple of neighborhood guys lost control of their drone. Your mother recognized them. Let's get this done."
By the time we were finished I wasn't feeling any pain or dizziness.
"How you doing lover?"
"I'm just fine. Let's get this day rolling."
So it was back to the apartment and getting ready for the day. Karl was off to class and I got a few things cleaned up around the apartment and then headed into the practicum.
It was the usual 15 minute lecture and then I was over to the student union for my lunch.
Pete and Susan showed up.
"What the hell Dennis?"
"Just a little accident. Nothing to worry about."
"You sure about that?"
"Yes I'm sure. You don't think I'd take a chance if I though it was deliberate do you?"
"No I don't see you doing that. You sure you're alright?"
"Positive Pete. I did my laps this morning no problem. I'll be hitting the rec center in a bit."
"Take it easy over there. Jogging and doing gymnastics are two very different things."
"I promise Pete. I feel the least bit off I'll go home."
So soon after I headed over to the rec center and got changed up and headed for the weight room today. I hit all of the stations on the weight machine, a few miles on the bike and finished up with a little work on the speed bag.
When I hit the whirlpool there were a few guys from the the team there and they obviosly noticed the bandage. I recounted the whole thing yet again and assured them all that I thought it was just one of those things.
After I hit the showers and had changed, Coach Warren cornered me.
"Are you damned sure this was an accident Dennis?"
"As sure as anybody can be about anything Coach. My landlady recognized the kids responsible. From the way she reacted, this wasn't the first time they had been in this kind of situation."
"Dean Evans has already heard about it and asked me to satisfy myself that this was an innocent accident."
"I'm convinced that it was Coach and the so was the overwatch guy that's covering me."
"Good enough then. Take it easy though. Sometimes head wounds take a bit of time to show how serious they are."
"Already done for the day Coach."
At which point I went out and checked the car over and headed back to the apartment.
I collected the weekly snail mail from home and went through it and it all appeared to be junk mail. I got some supper going and went and checked my email as well. There was a reply from Thomas.
Apreciate the heads up. Take care of yourself. Not worried about being found. Have told parents.
So one more thing not to have to worry about.
Karl got home shortly after that and we ate and pretty much crashed for the night.
Friday morning and we were at it once again. Laps run Karl and I got back to the apartment and got ourselves together for the day. Once the classes had been taken care of for the day I headed back to the apartment. I skipped any kind of workout today as I planned on spending a fair portion of the day at the rec center tomorrow.
While supper was cooking I once again checked my email. There was one from Kurt at the frat that the first of the competitions to determine who would chair the new advisory council was to be held this weekend and hoped that I would at least attend.
Karl showed up at that point.
"Why the sour face Den?"
"Thi first of those comnpetitions for the frats is taking place this weekend. I sort of promised Kurt I would be there, but I wanted to spend a good part of the day working out."
"So what's keeping you from doing both?"
"The events are scattered throughout the day, so there really isn't a solid block for me to practice."
"So do your workout on Sunday instead, just so long as you are ontime for supper."
"Yeah I suppose so. Hell it might even be fun."
"There's always the chance. Supper almost ready?
"Yeah if just a few."
Seeing as both Saturday and Sunday were pretty much both spoken for, I hit the books after supper and got as much done as I could before we crashed out for the night.
Saturday morning and we headed over for our jogging. Karl and I didn't bother going back to the apartment and just grabbed breakfast at the cafeteria. The events for the day were going to be held over at the sports venues. Karl and I made our way over in that direction for the first of the events. Kurt met us there.
"Nice to see you guys show up."
"Least we could do. How are we looking here today?"
"We stand just as good a chance as anybody else today, seeing as they excluded any sports team memebers from the athletic competitions. The administration thought that might give some of the frats an unfair advantage."
"Yeah I can see that as at least half of the football team seems to be in one frat."
That I was standing there, still in my jogging outfit, got a few looks but no comments.
"Is there anything that I would be able to help with?"
"Weeeellllll later on today there is the dunk tank we could always use more volunteers for. It's what we're doing for the money raising challenge."
"Oh I can just see the 'haters' going nuts for that one."
"That was kind of the idea."
"And with me being such a 'celebrity' that should rake it in right?"
"Only if you're willing Dennis. There's always the potential for some 'wild' balls and with a meet coming up in what 2 weeks and all of the shit that has been going on, is it worth the risk?"
"Those things usually have a big plastic shield in front of them for just that reason don't they? Yeah I think it is worth the risk. Count me in."
I didn't even have to look to know that Karl had an unhappy look on his face.
"It is relatively safe Karl and for somebody to make such a public move would be sheer stupidity. I'll grant you that some of the 'haters' aren't the sharpest tools in the box, but I can't see any of them being THAT stupid."
"I suppose not. Still not happy about it."
"Hey at least this way I get to contribute."
"Yeah I suppose."
Events this morning included a 100 yard dash, javelin, an obstacle course, and a tug of war. By the end of the morning our frat was amazingly, in second place. There was going to be an 2 hour break for lunch and then the afternoon money raising events would take place.
Karl and I caught a quick lunch and then I headed over to the rec center to get a few things for the dunk tank. Just because it was relativly harmless didn't mean I wasn't going to take a few precautions.
Once we got back to the activities, Karl and I took a quick walk around to see what else was going on. There was a kissing booth with the usual assortmortment of good looking guys, who got a little nervous when they saw Karl and I walk by. There were pies and various other things for sale. When we finally got to the dunk tank, there was a fair line of people waiting around. Word had gotten around that I was going to be there at some point.
Kurt had apparently decided to save me for last. Even at that there was no shortage of guys that wanted to dunk one of my frat brothers.
It was pretty obvious that there were people waiting just to get a shot at me. I went and found Kurt.
"Shall we give them what they're waiting for?"
"I guess we had better. How long are you willing to put up with this?"
"Until everybody is satisfied or they call an end to the competiton."
"Well, there's about 2 hours left to run, and there are still a few guys lined up to get dunked."
"Run them on through then as long as there is plenty of time left."
The few other of my frat brothers who were waiting got their turns, most of them actually getting dunked.
I got ready to put up with this and as I took my seat on the dunking plank, there were more than a few cameras waiting to capture my dunk.
The first guy up didn't have much of an arm, or eye as he barely came close to the target.
The next guy up however, I recognized. It was they guy from the football team who had tossed the clod of dirt at my back.
