We finished eating and then helped clean up, and then Karl and I were back upstairs.
"This is going to be another nightmare isn't Den?"
"Probably but we will get through it."
We parked ourselves in front of the TV until it was time to crash out. Once we got to bed I just held Karl until I fell alseep.
Monday morning as we were up and ready to go jogging. Much as I expected the media was outside when we left.
"Mr Saywer, and comment on yesterdays gymnastics team meeting?"
"None whatsoever. Have a good day."
"Here we go again. Damn maybe it's a good thing you do plan to give up gymnastics after this."
"Maybe, but until the all state is over, I'm in it all the way."
We pulled into campus and met up with the guys who were already being set upon by the media. Karl and I were swarmed when we came around the corner.
"Mr Sawyer, what have you to say about the alleged intimidation notes left for the gymnastics team members?"
"The same as always. No comment. Now please let us get our jog in and have a good day."
At that we set off for our jog. They were all gone by the time we were finished with our first lap.
"Thanks for towing the line guys. Let Dean Evans take the heat on this one. I expect there wil be a press release sometime today."
I did notice today that the guys kind of put me in the center of the group and all were keeping an extra sharp eye on the sorroundings.
We got our jogging done and Karl and I headed back to the apartment and got ourselves ready for the day.
Classes were seen to and then I was over to the student union and got my sandwich and drink and headed outside to my bench.
It wasn't long before Pete and Susan stopped by.
"Rumor mill is chugging away again."
"What are they saying?"
"That somebody is trying to intimidate the whole damn squad."
"Your ears only. The whole squad did receive notes saying we should back off before the shit gets deeper. I expect there will be a press release at some point today."
"And?"
"What do you think?"
"That they ain't going for it and you guys are more determined than ever to complete the season and take the all state again."
"Pretty well sums it up."
"Ok then, We're off to class."
I then saw Bob Watson headed towards me. He sat down and handed me a piece of paper. It was the anticipated press release.
Several members of the gymnastics team received notes over this past weekend advising them to
'give it up. The shit is only going to get deeper from here.'
Local, State and Federal authorities are looking into the matter.
When presented with a choice the gymnastics squad voted to continue on with their season and eventual trip to the all state competition later on this year.
"So it's out there now. I think they'd be damn fools to try anything now."
"From a logical standpoint, I've got to agree with you Dennis. of course nobody ever said whoever is behind this is logical, or for that matter sane."
"I hope to hell they are sane, or we could really be in a world of shit, and that's off the record Bob."
"Yeah I get it. Anything you can say for the record?"
"Sorry Bob we've all been told it's 'no comment'."
"Yeah I thought as much but had to ask. Think the whole squad will go that way?"
"I hope so, but please don't put it to the test."
"Just as long as when there is something to be said I get to hear it first."
"I can only commit myself to that Bob. I might not hear about anything until after you do."
"Yeah, I'm doubting that Dennis. Anyway be damn careful."
"You know it."
Both of us got up and headed off at that point. I had no idea where Bob was going, but I had my last class to get to.
When I was done for the day I went back to the car and checked it over a little more throughly than usual. I found a potato shoved into my tailpipe. Not life threatening, but certainly an aggrevation. It did start me thinking about what other potential there was for aggrevation.
I went by the dealership and got a locking gas cap. There wasn't any quick way to secure the hood, but I stopped by a customization shop and made an appointment to get hood locks installed. I figured that I'd make it back to the apartment pretty much the same time as Karl, so didn't make a call. We both pulled in about the same time.
"What happened Den? You're usually home a lot earlier than I am on Monday."
"When I got back to the car, I found a potato stuffed in my tailpipe. Got me to thinking and I stopped by the dealership and picked up a locking gas cap and made an appointment to have hood locks installed."
"Going to report it to Dean Evans?"
"I suppose I should. But I'm making another phone call first."
I pulled out my phone and hit the speed dial for Dana Cosgrove.
"What now Dennis?"
"When I checked my car this afternoon I had a potato shoved into my tailpipe. Just a heads up for everybody. I'm suggesting they all go out and get locking gas caps as well."
"Sounds kinda juvenile to me Den. If they were going to pull something wouldn't it have had a bigger payoff for them?"
"Somehow I think whoever is going to make this a war of nerves. Get us jumping at every little thing and we will all be basket cases before too long, which won't leave us in any condition to compete."
"And there isn't a hell of a lot we can do about it is there?"
"Other than keeping our eyes open and trying not to let it get to us, not a damn thing short of going hermit. Even that isn't a promise of getting past it."
"You call Dean Evans yet?"
"My next call, but I thought you might want to give the guys a heads up."
"Yeah I'm on that. Later."
I then called the Deans Office.
"Good afternoon Mrs Humboldt. This is Dennis Sawyer. I'd like to have a word with Dean Evans if possible."
"Just a moment Mr Sawyer."
"What can I do for you Mr Sawyer?"
"Just reporting that the harrasment has begun. When I went to my car today I found a potato stuffed in the tailpipe."
"I see. Thank you for reporting it Dennis. Have you alerted your teammates?"
"In the process of being done now sir."
"Thank you Dennis. The administration and I shall take this under advisement. Have a good evening."
"You too sir."
"So now what?"
"Other than getting some supper going, hell if I know."
We ate and then Karl hit the books while did a quick check on my imaginary portfolio, and my real one as well. Everything was fine with both, and I decided to back up the system tonight. If there was shit to be going on, I thought it a wise precaution.
Eventually we crashed and it was on to the next day.
We were up and out for our jogging. I did try to notice if we were being followed this morning, but didn't spot anyone.
When we got to campus there wasn't any media waiting for us and we got right to our laps undisturbed. It was home again and Karl was shortly off to class. I got a few things done around the apartment and then headed in for the practicum.
It was the usual 15 minute discussion and then reviews, again mine being last.
"Changes Dennis?"
"None sir."
"Then off with you."
So it was over to the student union and I was soon out on my bench. While I was sitting there I heard to campus wide PA system click on.
May I have your attention please. My apologies to those of you still in class. This is Dean Evans.
I'm sure that a good many of you are aware of the notes that were delivered to our gymnastics team over the weekend.
In conjuction with that several incidences have been reported over the last two days, indicating that there may be some provocatures in our midst.
Therefore it is recommened that each and every student and faculty member have their campus ID on their person at all times. Random checks will be made of ID so please cooperate with campus security. Thank you for your cooperation.
"Well this is going to be a pain in the ass."
"Hey Pete, Susan. I'm sure that this is the least offensive thing the administration to could think of. Nobody wants to see another campus wide lockdown I'm sure."
"That would be the surest way of ruining morale around here."
"Indeed it would Suze."
"Think there is anything in between that and a full lockdown Den?"
"Only a couple of things I can think off, neither of them would I like to see."
"Those being?"
"Either a sequestering of the gymnastics team or outright cancellation of the remainder of the season."
"And if they canceled the season, what would that do to the all state?"
"Depends on how all of the other teams did in their last meets, though I'm pretty sure we would still be eligible."
"That would still have you guys going in under difficult conditions I'm thinking."
"It sure as hell wouldn't leave us in the best frame of mind Pete."
"Well I wish you all the best Dennis. We have a class to get to. Keep us informed please?"
"Sure thing, but whatever happens, I'm sure it will end up being public knowledge in very short order."
