"Douglas!"
I felt Karl go stiff beside me and I could see that Daniel was about to chastize his son.
"Daniel, legally speaking he is correct."
"That may be true Dennis, but it was still uncalled for."
I stepped into him.
"Please let it pass for the moment at least. There's bound to be some resentment. Take him to task in private later if you have to."
Daniel just looked at me and nodded.
"We'll talk about this later Douglas. Mr Sawyer, Mr Holtz, may I present my wife Jeanine, and my sons Douglas and Drake."
It was handshakes all around but Douglas had a scowl on his face the whole time.
"You should be careful Douglas, your face could freeze like that."
There was no response from Douglas other than to deepen the scowl.
Drake on the other hand thought it was funny.
"Don't mind him Mr Sawyer. He's just pissed he's not the biggest brother anymore."
"Drake, Mr Sawyer was my....... the man who raised me. My name is Dennis and Douglas will always be your big brother. Let's hope he is worthy of the title."
"Who the hell are you to question whether or not I'm a good brother?"
"Douglas, like it or not, I am your brother, if you'll let me be. I've no designs on our fathers business or plan to make any claims against his estates when the time comes. Hopefully not for a good many years."
"What makes you think I need you or anybody else?"
"We all need somebody at some point in our lives Douglas. Just a little over two years ago I needed someone. I was in a coma for 6 months after the accident that killed those who raised me. I had complete amnesia. Karl was there for me and I thank god for it every day."
I was a bit surprised that Daniel hadn't had anything to say through all of this. I looked to him and he just sat back in his chair as if to say, "go ahead and work this out for yourselves."
"So you were dependent on him and that makes you weak."
"You think so Douglas? Then let me tell you about my life since I woke up."
I recounted everything from when I first woke up and had to do the physical therapy, through dealing with Pete, and then Dirk on through dealing with Janice and then when I got into college with Kyle and Larry Brown, and the bomb threat then the shooting on campus on through the whole thing with Andros and winding up with the whole deal fighting the gay bashers.
"All of that in just a little over two years Douglas. Have you had to put up with that much shit in your 17 years?"
"I......no I haven't."
Poor Drake was just sitting there with his mouth open.
"Well Dennis, let us hope that all of the drama is now behind you."
"I sure as hell hope so Daniel, but I'm sure there will still be some with the all state. So, what are your plans for the rest of your stay?"
"I have a couple of business situations to look into before we leave on Tuesday morning."
Which was too good an opening to pass up.
"Would one of those have anything to do with the Rustic Acres retirement home?"
"As a matter of fact I did intend to check on the progress there when I decided to come here. You have an interest?"
"More of a concern with the clients."
I explained the whole caroling set up and why we were concerned when we didn't get the call this year and what my subsequent digging had found.
"I'm afraid I reported my findings to the authorities. I've not gotten any word back as yet."
"Problems of that nature don't usually make it up to my level Dennis, but I shall have it looked into. With as many properties as we control, it's hard to keep track of everything."
"I can understand that. I'm just hoping that it doesn't turn up something systematically wrong in their operation."
"If it does I promise you changes will be made."
"Regardless, that leaves my brothers sitting around the hotel for the rest of the day today and all day tomorrow. I'd like to remedy that situation if I may."
"What did you have in mind Dennis?"
"Well Karl and I enjoy horseback riding. If you guys brought any bumming around clothes we could certainly take a ride tomorrow morning before Karl and I need to head on back to campus. This afternoon we have a pretty nice arcade that we could spend some time in."
"I don't think we own any "bummimng around" clothes Dennis and if we do we sure didn't pack them."
"Easily enough solved with a quick trip to the local WalMart, my treat."
"We can't let you do that Dennis."
"Sure you can Daniel. I've got a shit load of big brothering to make up for."
We all quickly finished our meals.
"My car is only a two seater, so we'll have to take your limo or get a cab."
"We'll take the limo Dennis, that is if you don't mind if the Mrs and I tag along."
I could see Daniel not wanting to let his boys go off with two still relatively unknown guys.
"Not a problem."
So it was off to Wally World and quickly enough we were all outfited for the afternoon and tomorrow. Karl and I even got new stuff rather than running home. I gave the driver directions on how to get to the arcade.
You would have thought that Douglas and Drake had never seen an arcade before the way they hit all of the different games. The fact that they earned prize tickets didn't seem to hurt anything either. I noticed that Daniel and his wife both tried a couple of games themselves.
What really got the boys going was when we went out back to the go karts. Douglas had obviously taken his drivers ed, but poor Drake was all over the track. Douglas gave me a run for my money on the highest level of karts, but I beat him by a nose. Karl had finished back in the pack as he didn't want any part of the rivalry.
Eventually we got back inside and it was more games. Karl and I donated any tickets we accumulated to Douglas and Drake and then it was off to redeem them, which took a bit of time as well.
By the time we were done at the arcade it was starting to get dark out.
"Dennis, we haven't had an afternoon like that in I couldn't tell you how long. Thank you."
"Yeah thanks Dennis!"
"Douglas, Drake you are both more than welcome. Now if we're all going riding in the morning It would probably be a good idea for us all to get some sleep this evening. We'll meet you here at about 9. It's about a 45 minute drive to the state park from here."
"State park? I thought we were going riding?"
"We are Drake, but what did you think I meant?"
"Well Douglas and I practice show riding, and dressage."
"Well this is just plain old horseback riding. Nothing fancy and no jumping. Just some fresh air and nice scenery."
"Sounds a little boring."
"Well Douglas, you can always sit around the hotel or maybe find a museum or something."
"No thanks I'll go riding."
"Then we'll see you in the morning. Have a good evening."
Karl and I grabbed our "good" clothes and got into the car and drove home.
It was still early enough that we went over to Karls house to fill in Stan and the rest of the family. When we walked through the door in our bumming around clothes, Stan just looked at us.
"I hope that isn't how you went to this meeting."
"No it isn't how we started out but is how we ended up."
I gave Stan and the family a rundown of how the day had gone.
"Daniel was open from the start. One of his sons however started out on the wrong foot. I'm hoping we get Douglas squared away somewhat before we have to head back to campus."
"What seems to be his problem?"
"If I had to guess, he's afraid I'm going to try and take things over being the older brother. I already told him I have no such intentions."
"And did that do any good?"
"I think it might have a bit."
"Sounds like your fears of ulterior motives were wrong."
"That's how it stands at this point and you have no idea how glad I am that I was wrong."
"So what's on the agenda for tomorrow?"
"We're all going horseback riding."
I saw Bobbies eyes light up.
"Sorry Bobbie, not this time. They still need to get used to Karl and I before we spring the rest of you on them. Stan, we're going to need a ride to the airport tomorrow afternoon."
"Not a problem. Do you need to notify the pilot or anything?"
"Yeah, I'll call and leave a message when we go back over to the house."
We spent a bit more time with Karls family and then headed back over to our house.
"I think the day went better than you had any hope for it to lover."
"So do I Karl. I just hope it was all on the level."
"Damn it Dennis don't do this to yourself. Take what you've been given and be happy with it."
"You have no idea just how much I would like to be able to do that Karl, but there is always going to be that little part of me that has to doubt. I hope to god I'm wrong."
I did remember to call flight services and leave a notice for the pilot.
"Now let's get some sleep."
