When Coach Warren did come out of his office it was easy to see that he was in a terrible mood. Asst Coach Connors had a pretty sore look on his face as well.
We didn't need to be called in as it was obvious there was something to be said.
"Ok guys, it's pretty obvious I'm ticked off. Crookshank is forcing a review of my case. It is likely to last past our meet with them. I therefore cannot be part of that meet. It's a head game guys. Now I know I'm clean, and I hope you guys have enough confidence in both me and yourselves to carry on. Coach Connors knows about all of the different things I have going on with you guys, so take your cues from him at the meet. Now stretch out. Closed session so I want to see everything today."
So we went right to it. We ran a full meet and I threw all of my triples and landed them solid. Greg and Josh both threw their triples as well. From what I could see we were in pretty good shape.
When we were released I headed into change into my bathing suit and hit the pool and then into the whirlpool. Dana was the only one there by the time I got there.
"I wonder if they've pulled this kind of bullshit on the other teams?"
The "they" being Crookshank.
"I haven't heard anything like this happening before Den. Maybe they are just that afraid of us."
"A possibility I suppose. Is turnabout fair play?"
"What do you know Dennis?"
"Not a damn thing at this point, but I'm not above going looking."
"I doubt like hell Crookshank would pull something like this if any of their staff had anything to hide."
"You're probably right Dana, but I'm going looking anyway. No telling what might turn up."
"Just remember Dennis, they could do the same to us if they haven't already."
"That being the case, should we ask the guys if there is anything in theirs pasts that could be held over them? If we know about it we can prepare for it. I don't think there's anything on me that isn't already common knowledge, but I'll ask Karl tonight."
"Thought you had your memory back already?"
"I do but what I might consider inconsequential somebody else might think important as well as the fact that there might still be some gaps that even I'm not aware of."
"I'll ask the guys to think about it Dennis, but I doubt very much that anybody will be forthcoming with anything. Nobody likes spilling the beans on themselves."
"All we can do is try Dana. If we're ready for it then it isn't taking anybody by surprise and heads don't get messed with. We all know how easily THAT can be done."
"Yeah we do. Ok operation fess up it is. Worst thing I can think of for myself is a couple of speeding tickets, which I paid."
"Damn, makes me look like public enemy number 1. There's the whole thing with Larry Brown and his father, a court case with one of the guys back home, Karl and I were implicated in a drug selling scheme and later vindicated, the whole thing with Kyle Grant, not to mention the whole Teramedies thing."
"Damn Dennis if any of the guys have half as much baggage as you, Crookshank could have a fucking field day."
"So better we find out about it now and get ready. Explain it to them Dana, or I will if you want."
"I'll do it Dennis. Think we need to run this past the coach?"
"I'm betting the coach will put an end to it the second he hears about it. I'm not saying we have to use anything we find on their guys, I just want to see our own asses covered."
"Yeah I don't think the coach can fault us for that. It's getting late, let's get out of here."
We went and showered up and changed and I called Karl to let him know I was on my way home. I did check the car over before starting it.
It was easy for Karl to see I had something on my mind when I got back to the apartment.
"What the fuck now Den?"
"Crookshank is starting to play head games with us. They're having Coach Warrens case reviewed and that will most likely prevent him from being at the meet."
"But Asst Coach Connors can step up right?"
"Yeah he can, but Dana and I got to thinking that they might try to pull the same bullshit on the squad. I mean just look at my life since I woke up from the accident. Which reminds me is there anything from before, other than the drug thing that somebody could throw in my face?"
"I see what you mean Den and not that I can think of off the top of my head."
"Well really think about it please. Dana is going to ask the team to do the same thing. We're hoping to get out ahead of this if Crookshank goes to a full court press."
"I will, but I'm betting you aren't going to let it rest there are you lover?"
"You know me to well. Nope I'm going to dig into the Crookshank coaching staff and the squad if I can find their names, which shouldn't be too hard."
"Be damned careful lover. They could slap you with invasion of privacy charges or something."
"Open source stuff only, I promise. Hell there are enough programs out there for this kind of thing. Hell I bet your dad even has some he uses to verify information."
"He probably does, and I'll not get him involved in this."
"I didn't ask you to, I'm just saying. Supper almost ready?"
"Yeah in 5."
So we had our supper and I got what school work I had done and then I went to work on Crookshank. Getting onto the colleges website was straight forward enough and finding the staff listings was easy. I got the coaching staffs names and then I went looking for the squad, which proved a little tougher to get but it was eventually found. By this time it was late enough to call it a night.
Wednesday dawned cloudy, but it wasn't raining so Karl and I were up and out and over to campus for our jogging, which was uneventful, but Gordon knew something was bothering me. So I explained it to all of them.
"Sounds like damn poor sportmanship to me Den."
"I won't argue that point Gordon."
"So I'm betting you aren't going to take this lying down?"
"No I'm not Cam. I'm digging into their staff and their team for a just in case. They want to play that way, I'll accomodate them unless Dana or the coach call me off."
"I'm betting your coach will put a stop to it the second he hears about it Dennis."
"Probably Aiden, but I like to be prepared. Dana is even going to ask the guys to dig into their own pasts and see if there is anything that might be used against them. At least we can be ready to defend ourselves even if we don't fight back."
"I guess he can't object to that."
"Probably not, but I can just about promise he doesn't want us sinking down to their level. I just hate not having an even playing field so to speak. Now we all need to get our asses in gear."
Karl and I headed back to the apartment and got ready for the day. The investment and tax classes were gotten through and by this time is was lightly raining out. I made a dash for the student union and got my lunch and found a table.
I was undisturbed today and eventually it was time to head over to the Risk/Rewards class. It went pretty much as expected and then I headed home. I got something going for supper and then did my imaginary portfolio check for the next day. Shortly after that Karl was home and we had supper. Once that was cleaned up I went to my computer and started digging.
By 10:30 I hadn't found anything more incriminating than a few parking tickets on the coaching staff. I called it a night and Karl and I were soon asleep.
Thursday morning dawned bright so we were up and out for our jogging with the guys. Nobody asked if I had found anything so it was a pretty quiet jog. Karl and I got back to the apartment and got ourselves ready for the day. Karl went on to classes and I again hit the computer.
By the time 11 am rolled around and I headed into the practicum, I hadn't found anything earth shattering to shake anybody up with. I still had a few names to run though. I didn't have a review today so I headed over to the student union for my lunch.
Gordon and Aiden found me for a few minutes between classes.
"I didn't want to ask in front of everybody, but have you dug up anything yet?"
"Other than a few parking tickets, not a thing. I still have a few names to run though."
"Yeah about what I thought you'd find. I can't imagine anybody being stupid enough to start something like this if there were skeletons in their own closets."
"Hey it was a shot. I'm just hoping our own guys come up clean."
"You might well tell them what you've found before you ask them to give up anything on themselves. No use embarrassing them in front of their teammates."
"I was intending to have them do it one on one Gordon. Still I want to be ready in case these guys do go for the throat."
"We'll see you in the morning Den we need to get it in gear."
I still had a few hours to go before the apparatus room would be open so I headed over to the library to use one of their computers to try and get finished with the list of names.
I had gotten all the way down to the last name on the list, and I hit paydirt. I found that last name had a pending court case;a rape case.
I didn't go digging any deeper than that. It was enough to shake them up the Crookshank team just for the allegation to be voiced, I thought.
It was time to head over to the rec center so I shut down the computer, but not before I made a point to erase the browseing history.
I got over to the center and got changed up pretty much without seeing any of the guys or the coach. When I got out to the floor there were a few guys around and not one of them had anything to say to me.
Coach Warren came out a few minutes later.
"Sawyer! My office now!"
