"Now what?"
I went into my office and picked up the phone.
"Dennis Sawyer, how may I help you?"
"Ahhh Mister Sawyer, happy New Year."
I recognized the voice.
"Mr Jacobs, A Happy New Year to you as well. What can I do for you today?"
"You remember not long ago I told you that we thought we had found your natural father?"
"I do."
"Well the gentleman is demanding the name of our client, namely you, and wants a DNA test."
"Is there anyway he can legally compel either?"
"Not at this time. If he duplicates our efforts he may well have enough to compel."
"Did he give any reason he is so hot for this? I mean he has had damn near 20 years to go looking, why now?"
"He hasn't said Mr Sawyer. But really all you have to do to answer that question is look at your own circumstances. Until we started digging around he may well have been ignorant of your existance."
"Possible, but I still don't like this. It reeks of something and I'm not sure what."
"Then you want us to refuse him any information?"
"For as long and as hard as you can. I don't suppose you can give me his information now that he is making a claim?"
"I'd prefer not to sir, for much the same reasons we will not be providing your name to him. The potential for harrassment in either direction isn't to be ignored."
"I suppose I can understand that. Can you tell me if he is in any position to greatly affect my company?"
"I don't believe he is."
"Then I'll have to be satisfied with that. Is there anything else Mr Jacobs?"
"No sir, just wanted to keep you appraised."
"Thank you Mr Jacobs have a good afternoon."
"You too Mr Sawyer."
I hung up and walked out of my office and Stan was still standing there.
"Dennis?"
"Just the lawyers with an update."
"Update? I thought they found your brothers adopted parents already?"
"They did, this is another matter, not business related."
At which point Stan stopped asking questions.
"I'm going to hang in here until Mr Eagleton leaves, at least for the day. Think he'll have to be back tomorrow?"
"No idea Dennis. I should think he will get everything he needs today, but hey, it's the government."
"Such a ray of sunshine you are sometimes."
I went back into my office and just started following the markets. At noontime I was glad to see that somebody had remembered my roast beef sandwich.
Along about 3 Mr Eagleton, Arthur and Stan called me to the conference room once again.
"Well Mr Sawyer, your operations department seems to be right on top of things and I'll admit that I have seen some facilities far worse off than yours. Mr Kline has informed me of what changes he plans to implement as far as upgrading your digital security and I find them more than adequate. I've also reviewed all of the steps you took once the breech was discovered and they are exactly what I would have done. All told, you handled this exceptionally well. I don't see a need for me to return tomorrow. I shall recommend a check back in 6 months to see that the inprovements have taken place however."
"Rest assured Mr Eagleton that they will be, and sooner rather than later."
"Then I shall be on my way and hopefully the next time we meet it will be under better circumstances Mr Sawyer."
We all shook hands and Mr Eagleton was on his way, which didn't go unnoticed by those on the floor. A goodly number of those faces turned to look to me when we all came out of the conference room.
I raised my voice just a bit to be heard over the machines.
"We got a clean bill!"
Which made a goodly number of people seem to breath a little easier.
The day continued on to the closing bell without any drama and we were all soon on our way to our various homes.
Karl was right there when I walked through the door.
"Well?"
"Everybody seems satisfied that we did just exactly what should have been done and that what we plan to do is what is required and then some."
"They why do I know there is something on your mind?"
"Because the lawyers called today."
I filled Karl in on what had been said.
"Damn lover, I thought you'd jump at a chance like this?"
"I thought I would have too, but it coming right on the heels of this computer thing feels..... I don't what, but not right."
"It's got to be coincidence Den. Why would your birthdad want to hurt your business?"
"Who knows? Maybe my natural mom hurt him and I'm the only one he can strike back at now? Maybe he thinks this will show me I need somebody to watch over me, and hell maybe the guy is just plain nuts."
"People who are nuts aren't usually successful and if I remember right the lawyers said the guy is well off."
"Yeah they did give me that impression. Regardless, I told the lawyers to refuse the guy until he had the law to back him up. Likewise they won't give me any information on the guy."
"So what now?"
"Now we take the next couple of days and try to just relax before we head back to the mayhem."
We had our supper and then hit the workout room for a little while. Karl used the general equipment while I worked the gymnastics stuff. We finally crashed out about 11 and 5:45 got there way to early the next morning.
We were up and out with the guys and got our miles run and our morning wave to Dana on his rounds and then back to the house. Showered shaved and fed we settled in the living room.
"So what do you feel like doing today lover?"
"Actually I'd just like to kick back and say to hell with everything Den."
"We'd be bored in an hour, and that's if Bobbie didn't come over and start bugging us and you know it."
"Probably, but I really don't feel like doing anything."
"You feeling ok lover?"
"Probably still a little tired from the other night is all."
So we settled for a bit and quickly decided that daytime tv wasn't for us. It was over to Karls house and we spent a little time rough housing with Bobbie.
We had lunch at Karls.
"Dennis?"
"Yes Connie?"
"A while back you offered to take me riding, could we go this afternoon...all 4 of us?"
Karl and Gerts heads both came up at that request. I couldn't ever remember Connie wanting to go with us before.
"I don't see any reason why not as long as it is alright with your mother."
"By all means, it's fine by me."
"Then finish up and get some rough clothes on and we'll be off."
Once Connie and Bobbie had left to get ready Karl just looked at me.
"She's never shown the least bit of interest before. I wonder what's up?"
"Oh I might be able to answer that son. I do believe a boy has caught here eye, and that boy likes to ride as well."
"Anybody I know mom?"
"Dana Perkins unless I miss my guess."
"Of Perkins farm outside of town?"
"The same."
The Perkins place wasn't a vegetable farm, but a horse farm. They hadn't turned out any real winning horses as far as racing was concerned, but show horses were something else.
"I hope Connie isn't to disappointed in a simple trail ride then, or that if it is Dana that he isn't disappointed Connie doesn't know how to jump."
"Hey you got to walk before you can run Den."
"Yeah I suppose at least being able to seat a horse will help."
In short order the four of us were on our way to the state park. Naturally the first one we saw was Cam.
"Damn twice in one break and this young lady must be Connie."
"And you must be Cameron. It's nice to finally meet you."
"So what for you folks today?"
"I think we'll settle for the 1 hour ride today seeing as it is Connies first time."
"Hmmmm then I think perhaps Primrose for Connie. She's got a more even gait when she gallops than a few of the others."
"You know them better than us Cam. Talked to Paul at all?"
"Almost every night."
Cam got us situated and led Connie around the paddock a few times so she could get used to riding a bit before we hit the trail. We got Connie and Bobbie both between us, and we were off. I was a bit concerned when we came to the galloping sections of the trail, but Connie handled them just fine. She was complaining of her back and butt hurting by the time we got back to the paddock.
"When we get home a good hot shower for you sis, and keep moving after that. Don't just plop down somewhere."
"Ok Karl."
By the time we got home it was pretty late in the afternoon. Connie and Bobbie went through the backdoor and over to their house. Karl and I cleaned up and had our supper. Mrs Ohanlon was gone for the night and Karl and I just settled for a bit and eventually went to bed, but not directly to sleep.
Friday we did finally just kick back for the better part of the day. We made sure to get the few things packed that we were taking back to school with us. Lunch was had at our house, but dinner had been over to Karls.
Saturday morning we got our jogging in with Roland and Aaron and got a hug from both of them before we headed home. It was in to shower and get dressed and then over to Karls for breakfast and a round of kisses and handshakes. Back over and I pulled the Toyota out to the driveway and went back and secured the house.
It was off on our way back to campus and the last few months of my formal education. I'd likely be learning things for years just like everybody else. Likely this would also be the last few months of my career in gymnastics.
