I hung up the phone.
"Grab a coat!"
"What the hell?"
"They have an alarm at the office."
I made sure to set the alarm here before I grabbed the keys to "baby" and headed out. Either the police were being nice to me or I just plain lucked out, but I made it to the office in record time.
There were already a couple of police cruisers there and Stan Bellows pulled up right behind us.
The police had an individual in one of the cruisers. I recognize the officer there with him.
"Officer Carlisle, what have you got?"
"We caught him in the break room rifeling the vending machines."
Which didn't fly for me. Too much risk for too little gain.
"Has he been searched yet?"
"Just a pat down for weapons."
"Just a hunch on my part, but I recommend a full body and cavity search. I'm thinking there might be a flash drive or memory card on him somewhere. Hell he might have even swallowed it."
"I'll tell them at intake."
"Are we cleared to go inside?"
"Should be in just a few minutes sir. They're clearing the whole building first."
"Any sign of there being more than one guy?"
"Not that we've found so far."
"Thank you officer. Please let me know when I can get inside."
Stan and Karl had been right there beside me the whole time.
"What are you thinking Dennis?"
"That this was a shitload of trouble just to score, what maybe $200 out of the vending machines? No there has to be something else going on here. I really hate to do this Stan, but start making phone calls. I want Angela and the physical assets team in here and a complete physical inventory done. Every stock certificate verified, every tangible asset. Get the IT guys in here and check both the servers and every terminal in the place capable of altering the programming on the servers or sending false information into the system and we need to do this before opening on Monday. Be sure they isolate everything from any outside connection before they even start looking."
"Damn Dennis...."
"I know Stan I'm paranoid and this is going to cost an arm and a leg, but we need to protect our clients."
"You're right of course."
"Karl, once we're inside I want you to get every coffee pot in the place going. Get a few cases of energy drinks and bars in here. Then from somewhere get some real food in here, preferably hot but whatever you can get."
"Maybe Roland can help with that."
"Give it a shot."
Karl stepped away and was on his phone. Stan was no less busy on his phone.
Now all we could do was wait for the building to be cleared.
Officer Carlisle came towards me at that point.
"Mr Saywer,. the chief wants to know if you want a foresics team to go through the place?"
"I doubt that would do much good with the number of elimination prints you would have to take."
"That was his thought as well but he did want to offer, just in case."
"If this guy has an accomplice, we may never know for sure and unless the guy gives us a name or the other guy, if there is one, screws up royally, there's little likelihood we'll ever catch him. Plus that will add hours to the time before we can get in there. Hours we are going to need to get things checked out before opening time on Monday."
It was about an hour later that the building had been cleared. They had even had the bomb dogs go through the place. By now people had started showing up and I outlined for them just exactly what I wanted done. I couldn't help the IT guys so I was up in tangible assets with Angela.
"this is going to take us a while Dennis."
"I know Angela, but I would much rather be on the safe side that to see something come back and bite us in the ass."
"I heard that. Well nothing for it but to get to it."
Which is what we did. Every account with physical assets had to be manually pulled and those files verified against physical assets. I handeled more stock certificates than I had ever seen. Each one I inspected as closely as I could to be sure it was a legitimate stock. Each piece of physical gold or silver weighed against its file. There were of course others doing just exactly the same thing. I don't know what time it was, but at some point my stomach growled at me and i headed down to the break room.
I expected that I would find some party platters around down there, but when I got there I was a bit sueprised. There was Roland with several other people behind a make shift serving line. Warming trays of differnt foods were along the tables.
"Damn Roland what did you do?"
"I called in a couple of favors and shuffled a few things around. Don't you worry about it. I've got everything covered with my company as far as having all events covered."
"Thanks Roland. This should well keep folks going."
"Just pay the bill on time."
"You can count on it."
I got myself a good plate of food and when I was finished with it headed back upstairs to Assets and got back to work.
Karl was playing gopher all night and I had little chance to see him. I don't know how far into Sunday we were when I found I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer and I went to my office to grab a couple of hours sleep.
When I did wake up, Karl was snuggled up beside me. My movements had awakened him.
"Any idea what time it is?"
"About 1 in the afternoon I think."
"Had they found anything when you joined me?"
"Not that I heard of."
"I better get back upstairs and help Angela and her team."
"Get something to eat first lover or you'll be back down here in short order."
I went into the break room and Roland was still there.
"No need for you to hang out here for the duration Roland."
"Of course there is. I have to maintain quality control. Can't have anything reflecting badly on the company afterall."
"But you must have other clients to see to."
"The company does but I don't have anything until next weekend, even with New Years."
"Still I hate to see these guys away from their families."
"The crew I pulled together are all single guys and girls. To them this IS family."
Stan came into the break room at that point. I had to start thinking about tomorrow if we didn't get this tackled tonight.
"Stan, think it will be busy tomorrow?"
"It usually isn't when it falls like this with just one day until we're closed again."
"So we could do with a skeleton crew?
"Yeah, it's how I it have scheduled right now."
"If by 5 we don't have this handled, send half of the tech guys home to get some sleep. If we have to tomorrow we will just have to explain what has happened to anybody who calls in and keep working on it."
"Not going to make people happy Dennis."
"I'd think they would be glad that we are going to such lengths to protect their accounts."
"They may not see it that way."
"Well we'll just have to explain it to them. Are we going to loose from it? Probably, but I would think that better than getting wiped out from some cockamamie scheme or other."
I was pissed at this point and it must have come through in my tone as Stan backed up a bit from me.
"Sorry Stan. I should probably take my own advice and go home, but I just can't."
"I understand that Dennis, just try and keep a lid on the frustration."
"I'll try Stan. I better get back to Angela."
I went back upstairs and got into it once again. It was only a couple of hours later that Angela came over to me.
"That's the last account to be checked Dennis. Everything looks to be in fine shape here."
"That's a relief. I guess you can let everybody go down and grab a bite and then send them home with my thanks."
I finished the account I was working on and got everything secured once again. I did notice that Angela came along behind me and checked for herself.
"Go home and get some rest. Afterall you do need to be here tomorrow."
"You may not be needed here tomorrow but please take your own advice."
"Not until we have answers Angela. If needs be I can grab another nap in my office and then head for home for New Years day......maybe."
I walked Angela out and then headed back to the IT section. They were all busy checking printed code against what was actually running and a bunch of other things I didn't really understand. Karl was there watching them as was Stan.
"Anything?"
"Not yet Dennis but from what I've been told they still have a long way to go. Even if they find out what, if anything, was changed it doesn't get us any closer to who."
"Ok. I can't imagine our standing here watching over them can be helping things. I'm going to my office for now as I can't think of anything else that might need doing."
"I'm actually hoping they don't find anything Dennis, that this is a lot to do for nothing."
"Nothing could make me happier Stan but I just can't see breaking in here for the candy money."
I went to my office and when I entered there was a guy sitting at my desk.
"Hey boss, just checking your computer out as ordered."
"How many more do you have to do?"
"Yours, Mr Bellows, his secrataries and then the traders terminals."
I let him get back to work and wandered the building a bit. I then went and got a bite to eat and then it was back to my office to lay down for a bit.
I was woken up when Karl burst into my office.
"They found something!"
