Of all three of the exams, this one now had me worried the most. Well to hell with it. It was over with and I was done. I headed for the car and checked it over and then headed back to the apartment.
Once I was there I went into the refridgerator and looked at what we had for leftovers. There were a couple of hamburgers a little mashed potato and some mixed veggies. I checked the freezer to see what we had in there. A couple of cheese pizzas was about all that could be had tonight. So I decided to take the two hamburgers and whacked them up and used them to top the pizzas. We had a bit of shredded cheese left, as we thought there was never enough cheese on these frozen pizzas. I waited until it was almost time for Karl to show up before I threw them into the oven to cook.
With almost perfect timeing, Karl walked in the door and just seconds later the timer went off for the pizzas. I pulled them out of the oven and let them stand for a minute.
"How'd it go love?"
"Think I did pretty well lover, you?"
"I'm only worried about one of the exams. It seemed pretty open ended to me."
"How so?"
"It called largely for an opinion. The prof could end up agreeing, or disagreeing, and just plain flat out calling you wrong."
"Well it's over and done with now so forget about it until January."
"I wish it were that easy. I fail a course and I've wasted the last two years. Can I still test for the license? Sure, but I'd sure as hell like having the certificate on the wall."
I cut up the pizzas and served them up. Once supper was finished and the place cleaned up, I made sure I had everything packed to head home. I then packed the car so I didn't have to hassle with it in the morning.
Karl and I crashed early and were up at the usual time. Just like Thanksgiving we grabbed our showers and were out the door. A quick drive thru breakfast and we were on the road. Traffic was about what you'd expect for the weekend before Christmas but we were home by 2.
It being Saturday, Mrs Ohanlon wasn't there. We unloaded everything and gathered up the presents and headed out the back door and over to Karls house.
Bobby must have been keeping an eye on my place as he was right there to greet us when we went through the gate.
We finally got inside and unloaded things around the tree and it was hugs and handshakes all around. The rest of the afternoon was spent getting caught up on everything. Eventually it was time for supper and when it was time for dessert, Gert brought out a birthday cake and everybody sang happy birthday to me.
"So much stuff has been going on I completely forgot about it. thank you all."
The cake was quickly finished off and before long Karl and I headed back over to our house.
"Did you know they were going to do that?"
"I did which is why I didn't say something first thing this morning, or all the way home."
I was ready to settle in for the night. No such luck.
The doorbell rang about 7:30 and when I opened it there were Aaron,Roland, and Pete standing there and throwing confetti at me.
"Happy Birthday!!!!!"
"Jeez you guys, come on and get in here."
"Nope you and Karl get out here we're partying!"
I looked past the guys and there was a limo waiting for us.
"And just where are we partying?"
"Where else? Club Mann."
Which surprised the hell out of me with Pete in the group. He must have seen the look on my face.
"Yeah Den I knew where we're going and I'm ok with it as long as nobody tries to give me a lap dance."
"All lap dances are reserved for the birthday boy."
I resigned myself to it and grabbed a coat and made sure the alarm was set and went to the limo. I even broke training and had one of the beers that was in the mini fridge on the way to the club.
We were apparently expected as we were ushered right in when we got there and to a reserved table front and center. The evening passed most enjoyably and when Jason came down off stage came straight to me and gave me a lap dance.
"Happy Birthday Den!"
He moved on around the club and back onstage to finish his routine. I had consumed a few beers tonight, seeing as I wasn't driving. When we got home I had to really concentrate to get the alarm taken care of. It was well after midnight so I knew we weren't going to be jogging in the morning.
When I finally tumbled into bed Karl just looked at me.
"Damn you are really shit faced tonight."
"Guess it what comes from abstaining the rest of the year lover."
"Damn good thing tomorrows not Christmas. Bobby would have your hide for sleeping in."
"Can we do that tomor.....today?"
"Don't think it will be a problem lover. Now shut up and go to sleep."
Which didn't take very long to happen. When I did wake up it was fairly late, by our regular standards. Karl was up before me and had coffee ready when I kind of staggered into the kitchen.
"Now I remember why I usually stick with the non alchoholic beer."
"At least get some coffee into you love, or some other liquids. It will help."
I wasn't much of a coffee drinker so I had a couple of glasses of water.
"Breakfast?"
"Not going to push my luck that much. Just some toast for right now."
"Damn Den, you really are a light weight when it comes to drinking. I think just about everybody else went two to your one and from what I saw last night, none of them were as wasted as you."
"You may not have noticed Karl, but Pete was drinking the non alchohilc beer last night."
"Yeah I noticed Den and I can't say as I expected anything else from Pete."
"Do we have anything on the agenda for today?"
"Not that I'm aware of, but dad or Bobby might have something to say about that."
"I need a damn hot shower before I can even think about that."
I headed in and got the water good and hot and took my time there this morning. By the time I was done I was feeling a bit better. I got some clothes on and made my way out to the living room. It was just Karl there waiting on me.
"So, we heading over to my place or we just going to sit here this morning?"
"We don't put in an appearance, and in short order, Bobby will be over here wondering what the hell is wrong."
"True enough Den. Kinda surprised he hasn't been already."
So it was out the back and through the gate and into the kitchen.
"Well you boys must of had quite the night not to be getting over until this time."
"What can I say Gert, they caught us by surprise and we went out with the guys."
"I suspected as much."
Bobby must have heard us as he came charging into the kitchen at that point.
"What are we gonna do today?"
"What do you want to do?"
"Can we go riding?"
I turned to Gert and she just nodded yes.
"I don't see why not. Think Connie would like to come along?"
"She never has before Den."
"Go ask her anyway Bobby."
Bobby just made a face, but went and asked his sister.
Bobby had a bit of a smile on his face when he returned.
"She said thanks for asking but no."
"Then let's get it in gear."
We were soon out the door and back over to my place and got into the Toyota and headed out. I even let Karl drive to be on the safe side.
When we got to the stables the first person I saw was Cam.
"Hey guys! Three for what the 1 hour or 2 hour?"
"Let's go for the 2 hour."
"Ok the next one will be leaving in about 45 minutes. So how did exams go for you guys?"
"I'm happy with what I did."
"Only one has got me worried Cam."
"Really? I never thought I'd hear that from you Den. What happened?"
"The test just seemed to open ended, like there was no right answer and maybe no wrong one either."
"That's kinda weird. What class was that?"
"Risk/Rewards. It's mainly for the financial certification program so I doubt it will be required for you."
"Small blessings by the sound of it."
At that point a ride came in and Cam had to get busy. So we waited around until the ride started to form up. We got our horses and waited for everybody else and then we were off.
We had Bobby ride in front of us so we could keep an eye on him. I don't know if it was the fresh air or the excersize or combination of the two, but by the time we got back to the stables I was feeling a lot better. Luckily nothing happened and we got back to the stables without incident.
We stopped and grabbed a quick lunch on the way home.
Once we were in the house and Bobby had gone over to his house, I checked the answering machine and there was one message, so I played it.
"Dennis, Stan Bellows. I just found out that you were home already. Our Christmas party is tonight at the office starting at 7. I know it's short notice, but we'd sure like seeing you and Karl there. Regardless, a belated happy birthday and I hope we see you tonight."
Karl was standing in the doorway to the office and had heard the message.
"What do you think?"
"I think you at least should show up. You didn't last year, but you were in the front office last summer and they all know who you are."
"Then I guess we're going out again tonight."
"Yeah but I'll be sticking to something non alcohoic tonight or I'll never make it to caroling tomorrow night."
"You had to remind me. 5 will get you 10 that we pulled Rusty Acres again."
