"Den?"
"Looks like some kind of fire on or near campus."
"Crap! What do we do?"
"Sit here and wait for news."
I turned the tv on to the local station and there wasn't anything there as yet. My phone rang and I snatched it up.
"Hey it's Aiden. It's not any of the dorms. It looks like it's coming from Frat road."
"Shit! Thanks Aiden. You hear anything else that can be substaniated let me know please."
"You got it."
I hung up.
"Aiden says it looks like it's coming from Frat Road."
"Somebody wouldn't be that stupid would they Den?"
"How the hell should I know? It could just as easily be somebody who broke curfew and rammed his car into somebody elses."
"Always possible lover. Listen we know it isn't the dorms, should we try and get some sleep? There likely won't be any news until the morning."
"If then. I can see the college trying to sit on this like they did the shooting."
"Maybe love but they didn't automatically shut down the net and phone sevice so there are likely any number of reports out there already."
The special bulletin logo came up on the tv,interupting the horror movie from the 50's that was showing.
"We interupt this program to bring you this special bulletin. There has been an explosion and subsequent fire on State campus this evening. Apparently there are no structures involved and it appears this is a motor vehicle accident. We're still awaiting information from the fire marshall and school authorities. Our mobile unit is trying to get into position at this point and hopes to launch one of their drones to overfly the scene.
State campus has been the scene of a confrontation between two different student bodies over the last weeks and it is yet unknown if this explosion and subsquent fire are connect to that issue. Please stay tuned for further information. We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming."
"Well if this isn't more than just an accident they've managed to tie it to the gay/straight issue even if it isn't. Any wonder I dislike the media?"
"Come on Den, it's not that much of a stretch and you know it."
"Probably not, but they didn't even wait for any facts before jumping to that conclusion. This will damn sure have the reporters out front in the morning."
"More than likely. We going to try and get through them?"
"I'm doubting it. I don't trust myself not to go off on them with as little sleep as we've had the last couple of nights or will be getting tonight."
I started pacing and as I passed the window I could see that the lights were on at a good many houses. At least if the reporters got here and our lights were on it wouldn't look like we were anything other than normal.
"We going to try and go back to sleep Den?"
"You can try if you want to lover. I'm awake now for who knows how long."
"I'll put the coffee on lover. You're not staying up alone."
So we settled in and waited for there to be more news. It was about an hour later that the special bulletin logo came up again.
The logo faded to a scene of a car burning as seen from above. Obviously a drone shot.
"We have further information on that explosion and fire on campus. As you can see from these shots it appears to be a single vehicle involved. It has been reported that two students were in the car and have received severe burns. They are being treated at Mercy General and their identities have not been released. As nearly as can be determined the incident took place in front of the Frat house that has been involved in a confrontation with another group of students, the issue being that those students in the frat are either gay or bi sexual, and are trying to force their ways on other students. Two different investigations have found that there is no basis in fact for these allegations.
Fire marshals are witholding any comment as to the source of the explosion and subsequent fire and simply say that the incident is under investigation.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming."
I turned the tv off.
"And that is going to see the lid put back on tighter than before. Damn I hope they don't just plain shut the campus down and send everybody home."
"Could most classes be held remotely do you think?"
"I know yours and mine could Karl, but hell if I know about everybody elses. Would it be just our campus or everybody all over town? Hell I don't even know if the other campuses have even been effected to begin with."
"Pretty sure they are all under the same conditions lover."
"Then any thing that is hands on sure as hell wouldn't be able to be done remotely, which likely means the medical students will get hurt the most. The engineering school should be able to carry on, but the aggie campus will hurt for it if it comes to that."
"I don't envy the board of Governors this one lover."
"Neither do I. I suppose it depends on just what the fire marshals find."
My phone rang again at that point.
"Hey Denny it's Kurt. Just thought after that last special report that you'd want to know everybody here is shaken up but fine otherwise."
"Thanks Kurt that is a relief. You guys try and stay safe and I'll see you when I see you."
"You guys too. Later."
"It's starting to get light out lover and I don't see anybody in the street yet. Want to get our jogging in now and try and take it easy until classes?"
"They'll likely be there by the time we get back Den."
"So we go now and the first one that shows up we can come back in. I need to do something right now before I flip out."
"OK ok let's get changed."
We got our jogging stuff on and were out the door and through the gate. We got a look from the officers out front as we were a good hour earlier than usual.
We actually made our 5 laps around the block before anybody showed up. So it was upstairs to shower and get some breakfast. By the time we were done with breakfast the reporters were out front in force. My phone started ringing and the computer was dinging its little heart out with incoming emails.
I did screen both the phone calls and the email in case there was something from the college. I did answer a call from Stan Bellows and one from Dirk. The only emails I responded to were from Aaron and Roland.
"Looks like classes are going to be held Karl."
"Then I guess we had better get our asses in gear. Getting onto campus today is likely to be a bitch and not just because of the reporters."
Karl called that one for sure. The reporters were bad enough but they were inspecting cars before letting them on campus. I got to my investements class without any problem. I did take the time to look around carefully before heading over to the tax class. I didn't see anything that looked out of place, so I headed over and thakfully didn't have a problem.
Mr McEmbers got right to it and only gave me a bit of a look as I was on my way out. Once again I looked around carefully before heading over to the student union for lunch.
Again things looked to be normal and I moved out. Once I got my sandwich and drink I headed outside. Was I making myself a bit of a target? Probably, but folks had come to expect me to be there at this time of day and if I wasn't, well they might consider that as there being something to worry about.
Again today everybody found me and just about all at the same time.
"Ok, anybody got any facts, or rumors for that matter?"
"I haven't heard a damn thing Den, other than it appears two students were involved."
"And that much was reported last night Gordon. Anybody else?"
"There is speculation that it was some kind of a bomb that went off prematurely, but no facts."
"And I bet they haven't released the guys names yet either? What are the odds when they do a little digging it will link them to guys trying to get the frat thrown off campus?"
"No idea Cameron, but not long odds I'm thinking."
"But why are they going to such lengths Dennis?"
"I have no way of knowing for sure Susan. If I had to take a guess? They're afraid of what they don't or don't want to understand."
"But that's stupid. Why would somebody not WANT to understand?"
"I can't give you a reason and those straight guys might not even know themselves."
"However this ends up going it is going to be a bitch of a second half of the year."
"Hell the rest of this half ain't gonna be any picnic either Den."
"Probably not Pete. Well I think we all have classes to get to."
The group broke up and headed their seperate ways. I got over to the Risk/Rewards class. Today it seemed to drone on forever. It was finally over.
I took the time to look around before I stepped out of the building. It wouldn't be obvious to the casual glance, but I noticed that there were groups of guys rather strategically placed so that no matter which way I tried to get back to my car I would have to run a gauntlet of sorts. I considered my options.
I could hang out here for a while, but I would end up violating the time I had to get off of campus. Alternate exits? There were some but I was betting they were equally as well covered. I did go to the end of the building and confirmed my suspicion.
I could call campus security and ask for an escort, but that felt like admitting defeat.
Karl would probably kill me himself when he found out, but I didn't see anything for it but to walk, not run, to my car.
I checked around once more and started down the path that looked the safest. I felt a goodly number of eyes following me as I made my way to the car.
Something hit me in the back.
