The time finally came for me to head into class. I made my way down to the car and did check it over before getting in. The security fence was good to have and did provide some peace of mind, but I wasn't taking any chances.
I got the car started and headed out of the gate. The reporters weren't quite as cordial for me as they had been for Karl despite the polices best efforts. I finally got through the crowd and headed for campus.
Things weren't any better at the main gate and it took me extra time to get in and I was damn near late for the class. Was I taking a big risk for the 15 minutes of discussion? Yeah. But I thought it was important that my face be seen going about my regular schedule as much as was permitted by the lockdown. So I stayed for the whole class even though I wasn't having a review today.
"I'm happy to know that you're not taking such blatant risks with your portfolio Mr Sawyer."
"Just thought it was important to be seen today."
"I quite understand. Stay safe."
I made my way back to the car with my head on a swivel. When I got there I found that the car had been liberally decorated with tomatoes. I checked the rest of the car over and made my way off campus. I did stop at a carwash before getting home.
Once I fought my way through the reporters I got into the apartment as quickly as I could. Already knowing what I would find I did go through my email. There were a couple of legitimate emails that I replied to but the vast majority of them were requests for interview and the like.
I was getting supper ready when my phone rang with a ringtone that I didn't often hear. Matter of fact it was the first time I had heard it ring since I programmed it.
"Dana, what's going on?"
"Just thought I'd let you know that we're still alive for the all state. Ashton called and forfeited about an hour ago. Coach just let me know. So for at least this meet we're still good."
"I thought we were the ones who had to forfiet?"
"Yeah well the way the coach tells it, Ashton realized that they didn't have much of a shot at the all state and that we did, so they kept us alive. Something they sure as hell didn't have to do. Guess they also weren't comfortable comming into the situation we got going on here."
"Well I can't say as I blame them for that. We should make some kind of recognition to their team for this act."
"I already called their team captain and took care of it Den. Now all we can hope for is a quiet campus this weekend."
"This weekend and then when they lift the lockdown. Kinda hard for anybody to do anything until it's lifted."
"Yeah I heard that, though I'm sure there are plans being made over the net and such."
"Wouldn't surprise me in the least. Take it easy Dana and I hope we can get back to it pretty soon."
"Amen to that Den. Later."
Now all I had to do was wait for Karl to get home safely. When it was time I got supper going and waited nervously for Karl. I finally heard the gate opening and saw that it wasn't Karl, but Mr Castanza. Karl pulled in pretty much right behind him and made his way quickly upstairs.
"So, how was your day?"
"Thankfully uneventful, you?"
"Mostly uneventful."
"Mostly?"
"Somebody attacked the car with tomatoes while I was in class."
"If that's the worst that happens, I'd consider yourself very damn lucky."
"So would I, but I'm betting this isn't the last of it. There was some good news today at least.'
"Oh?"
"I got a call from Dana. The Ashton team forfieted the meet so we remain alive for the all state."
"They didn't have to do that did they?"
"Nope by all rights we should have had to, but apparently they realized that they didn't have much of a shot at the all state and that we did, so they kept us alive. At least that's what Dana told me."
"Well there's that at least. Let's hope for another quiet night."
"I'm more concerned about when they lift the lockdown, though any of the guys who are against us off campus can surely act I suppose."
"Maybe they're just biding their time until it can be a concerted effort."
"And that thought scares the hell out of me lover. They strike at many points all at the same time and there's no telling what the damages might be."
"Hey everybody has gotten the message to keep their heads down. There's not a hell of a lot more that can be done, I don't think."
"Me either lover short of calling in the troops and that would piss off another different set of people I'm sure."
"Right, so all we can do is wait."
"Well, we can go ahead and have supper at least."
Which is what we did and then it was hitting the books until we crashed early, seeing as we didn't sleep for shit last night.
Tonight wasn't a whole lot better, but once again we must have dropped off at some point as the alarm was once again in my ears. I again made my way to the front window and found a goodly number of people waiting at the gate.
"They're still out there lover."
"Then screw it and come back to bed for a while."
"I'm up now Karl I'm not heading back in."
I instead went and took a nice long steaming hot shower. I then headed out to get myself some breakfast, and the early news.
It appeared that it was another quiet night both on campus and in town. This waiting for the other shoe to drop was likely to be just as bad as having the shoe drop.
"It seems our luck is holding for right now lover. It was another quiet night."
"With another weekend of lockdown coming though Den. I expect a major breakout over the weekend."
"I wouldn't be surprised. Now get your ass in gear,we still have classes."
"Yes dear."
We left for classes at the same time this morning, and though questions were shouted at us, our way wasn't blocked. It was much the same when we got to the main gate to get on campus. Maybe because there wasn't anything happening the reporters were losing their interest and were just waiting to be called off.
I got through my first two classes with no problems and then hit the student union for lunch. Everybody knew where to find me and the all seemed to stop by today.
Gorden and Aiden were first.
"How you guys holding up?"
"We're getting by Den. There hasn't been any bullshit in our dorm thank god. Nothing but a lot of talk outside of it. Sure as hell miss jogging with you guys though."
"We haven't been out in a couple of days. I miss working out with the team, and you guys."
"Yeah we're all going to get soft at this rate."
"Hey if it stays quiet this weekend, maybe they'll loosen things up a bit."
"We can always hope I suppose. Later Den."
Then it was Pete and Susan.
"This whole mess sure is killing our love life."
"Courage, this to shall pass Pete."
"Not soon enough for us."
"I hear you Suze. Maybe if things stay quiet this weekend."
Was I pushing the idea for a quiet weekend? Damn right I was for all of the obvious reasons. Pete and Susan were soon enough on their way as well. Then it was Paul and Cams turn to show up.
"Missed you guys at dinner last weekend."
"Looks like you'll be missing us again this weekend. How are things holding up at the house?"
"The police have been doing an outstanding job as far as I'm concerned. I haven't really spoken to your parents since dinner."
"I call them every night, but all they say are things are fine. At least I got an independent cconfirmation. We need to get going Den. See you next week if things don't change."
Carlton and Devon even showed up.
"At least we're in the same room. I really pity these guys who aren't. You have anything the rest of us aren't privy to?"
"Not a word, but I'm thinking a quiet weekend will go a ways to getting things eased up on at least."
"Maybe, we'll spread that word and hope for the best."
By now it was time for me to get it in gear and get over to my last class. Risk/Rewards was gotten through without any problem. I made it a point to take a good look around before I left the building just to be on the safe side. There was plenty of campus security around and I felt pretty safe getting to the car. No tomatoes today, but I did make it point to check the car over, even with the campus security roaming the parking lot.
Soon enough I was on my way home and when I got there I was surprised to see that there weren't any reporters around. I got inside and started to get things ready for supper. A little while later Karl called.
"How are things there?"
"No reporters if that's what you mean."
"Then how about we go out to supper tonight?"
"Much as I would love to do that I think we had better keep a low profile."
"Then how about we pack up and dissappear for the weekend? You can't keep a lower profile than that."
"Not a bad idea, but if something did happen it would be too easy for somebody to point the finger at us instigating it if we weren't around to be seen."
"Lover, with the internet and cell phones and whatever we could instigate something right from the apartment if we had a mind to."
"Point taken, but I think we had better hang around here. If something does happen and we're needed in some capacity, I don't want to be 300 miles away somewhere."
"Fine love we'll tough it out here for the weekend and keep a low profile. I'll be there in a few minutes."
