I didn't waste any time getting back to my car and checking it over and heading to the apartment. When I pulled up to the Castanzas house there was a police car sitting out front already. Seems everybody was taking this fairly serious today.
I went upstairs and just to be prepared, I stuffed a few things into a bag for both Karl and I in case we decided to make a quick getaway.
When 4 oclock got there I had the tv on to a local station that I had heard was going to carry the press conference live. The station did the cutaway as Mr Summers came out to the podium.
"Ladies and gentlemen thank you for attending. Press kits have been passed out so you will have all of the particulars at hand.
The crux of it being that I have not been able to find any absolute and irrefutable proof of the alligations made, that the gay community is trying to influence other students to be gay.
There were studies brought to my attention, copies of which are in the press packs, which indicate that it is not a choice or desicion to be made. Either you are or you aren't.
Therefore the concerned fraternity shall remain on campus. Those who brought suit against the fraternity are advised to cease and desist any further action."
I had heard enough at that point and could see that it was about to go into questions and answers, so turned off the tv. Now all I had to do was wait for the reaction to start setting in. It didn't take long for my phone to start ringing and for the computer to start chiming incoming emails. I ignored them all for right now.
When it was about time for Karl to show up I looked out the front window and sure enough there were people standing by the gate. The police officer who had been stationed out front was trying to keep the driveway clear. Karl slowly approached the gate and they were all over him. He just kept rolling slowly forward. When the gate did open for him several people dashed inside and were up the stairs pounding on the door.
Karl wisely stayed in his car until another police car showed up and got the reporters off of the stairs and back outside of the gate. Karl made a mad dash up the stairs and through the door I had open for him. I slammed the door shut and bolted it.
"Was it any better at the main gate to campus?"
"Not a damn bit. At least the guys on campus don't have to put up with this bullshit."
"No I'm sure they have a completely different kind of bullshit to put up with. Did you see anything before you left?"
"Just a shit load of campus security around everywhere. We sleeping with one eye open tonight?"
"You actually think we're going to get any sleep tonight?"
"I was hoping lover."
"Well I doubt like hell my phone is going to stop ringing any time soon, let alone the computer shutting up with incoming emails."
"You'd better start going through those as all of them might not be what you think they are."
"After supper, maybe."
Which is what we settled down to do. As nervous as we both were over the whole thing, we kept it light tonight. After supper I did start to go through the emails. Most of them were what I thought they would be but there were a few from friends at home asking how I was holding up and to be damn careful. Those I took the time to answer. The ones that wanted interviews or comments I gave a no comment to. I figured anything that I said would only enflame and already bad situation.
I did call Gordon to check in on them.
"How you guys holding up?"
"We're good for now. Things have been quiet on campus so far."
"Yeah they probably will be with the lockdown. After it is lifted is when I'm really expecting a backlash."
"Maybe Den, but if these jokers don't give a damn about the no harrasment policy, what makes you think that they are going to honor the lockdown?"
"Because if they violate it they will most likely get caught at it with as many security guys as they have all over campus right now. They get caught they get sent home and I'm hoping that they're at least smart enough to realize that."
"I'm not taking any bets Den."
"Neither am I Gordon, but I'm hoping. Regardless be damn careful tonight and for the next few days at the very least."
"You guys too. Miss you guys jogging with us in the morning."
I also gave Cameron a call.
"Yeah were holding it together Den. So far things have been quiet, but it is early yet."
"I heard that. Just be damn careful."
"You too. You guys don't have a lockdown protecting you."
"Nope, just a couple of police crusiers out front."
"That should keep you guys safe. I'll let Paul know they're out there. Maybe he'll get some sleep tonight."
"Here's hoping somebody does. Later Cam."
I went back and finished responding to the emails that were still coming in. I finally gave up trying to keep up and shut the damn thing down.
Karl had given up a bit earlier and was just sitting on the couch. I went over and joined him and he just wrapped his arm around me.
"What are we going to do tomorrow lover?"
"I imagine we won't be able to get our jog in for the reporters, let alone any haters Karl. As far as classes, I'll try to head into the practicum, but if I miss it no big deal. You have to be in earlier so you can give me a heads up before it's time for me to leave, or if it looks to hairy out there stay home."
"If there are even classes tomorrow. They have a troublesome night on campus I can well see the Dean cancelling classes for at least tomorrow."
"We probaably ought to watch the early news tonight and see what kind of backlash there is, and if there will be classes tomorrow."
I turned on the tube as it was just about that time.
"In local news tonight, things are State campus have remained quiet tonight after a decision was made on a case involving a gay fraternity. The allegation was that the fraternity was attempting to turn straight students gay.
The finding, by arbitor Elliot Summers,of the Summers Group which consults the Government on a variety of matters, being that the claims were untrue.
Reaction to this decision was expected to be immediate and outspoken. There have been no statements issued from either party to the suit at this time.
In sports..."
I turned the set off.
"I can see why the frat might not have anything to say about it. Hell I'm betting the Dean asked them specifically not to comment. That the haters haven't been shouting at the top of their lungs surprises the hell out of me."
"You don't think they might just have given up do you Den?"
"No I'm thinking this is the quiet before all hell really breaks loose."
"Which I'm betting will happen when the lockdown is lifted."
"On campus yeah. I'm more worried about what may happen tonight and over the weekend off campus. Damn it! I just realized that we're going to have to forfeit the meet this weekend. Our chances of going to the all state will be shot."
"I'm sorry lover, I know you were looking forward to going. But didn't you tell me something about the Dean going to bat for the teams?"
"Yeah I asked him about that yesterday and he said he hadn't heard anything yet."
"So there might still be hope?"
"There might be but I'm not betting on it."
"Shall we try and get some sleep?"
"I suppose we had better try."
We went to bed and held each other and must have eventually dropped off as the alarm was going off. I got up and made my way out to the front window and there were more people out there this morning than there had ever been before.
"We're not even going to make the attempt to go running today lover. Hell looks like even the networks are out there this morning."
"Are we even going to try to get into classes Den?"
"Let me check and see if we're even having them."
I booted the computer and checked the school bulettin board and there was no notice. I then went and scanned my rather large collection of email and there wasn't anything there either.
"Can't find anything that says classes are cancelled."
I went and turned on the daybreak news.
"Locally it was a quiet night after a decision was rendered yesterday on the issue of gay students trying to influence straight students. Classes are expected to be held today on their normal schedule."
"Sounds like we're having class Karl."
"So the question is now, do we run the gauntlet or not?"
"I don't know about you lover, but, yeah I think we need to do it. We can't be afraid of what might be coming down the road. I'm not saying we shouldn't be careful but whatever it is we have to face it."
"So go on doing, but do it eyes wide open and paranoid as hell?"
"That about sums it up lover. Breakfast?"
"Are you kidding me? I'm about ready to jump out of my skin. What the hell makes you think I'd keep breakfast down Den?"
"Damn Karl, I was just asking."
"I know, sorry lover but I'm really on edge about this whole thing."
"Shit and I'm not? We still need to eat lover."
"Yeah I suppose so."
We went about getting ourselves ready for the day and Karl took off. I watched from the window, and the police got Karl out through all of the reporters without too much of a hassle. I had hoped that with Karl heading into class that a few of the reporters would have taken off. No such luck. They all stayed right where they were and waited for me.
