"Please coach any meet but this one. This is Anderson, the one with the whole spitting incident from last year. I told their coach I was going to be here to beat them this year."
"Dennis, because it is Anderson is precisely why I'm asking you to step down. I'm seriously doubting it, but they could well retaliate for last year and have it aimed specifically at you."
"They'd have to be out of their everloving minds to do so,especially after last year. I'm betting there are going to be all kinds of eyes all over campus starting when we arrive there Friday night."
"Probably so, but that doesn't stop the students from trying something. The sactioning body can't do anything against those students not on the team, I don't think. This means a lot to you doesn't it?"
"It does coach. Larry Brown may be gone, but wherever he is I'm sure he'll be watching. I need to know for me that we can beat them straight up. They didn't have very much of a turn out here last year, so I'm betting that by in large their student body don't have a real keen awareness of the matter, not unless the team made a point of spreading the word and I don't see them being proud enough of the situation to do that."
"I'll think about it Dennis, now off with you."
I went and took my time in the pool and the whirlpool and then headed home, not in the best of moods.
It must have been obvious to Karl when I walked in.
"Damn, what now Den?"
"Coach is thinking I should be an alternate for the Anderson meet."
"Why in the name of hell would he think that?"
"He thinks the team and maybe the students are holding a grudge from last year."
"Always possible but I'm doubting it from what I saw and what you told me last year."
"I am too, but it is ultimately the coaches decision."
"And he is going to make it when?"
"Hopefully at the all day Saturday, but I'm betting he's going to hold it until Tuesday."
"It's going to be a long 5 days."
"Probably, but I'm not going to let it affect how I do things until then."
"Bullshit Den. This is going to eat at you until the decision is made and we both know it."
"So if I snap at you will you cut me some slack?"
"All day long lover."
Supper was soon ready and after I hit the books for a bit and then crashed in front of the tube.
Friday morning it wasn't the alarm that got us up, but a crash of thunder. It was coming down in buckets. Karl and I tried to roll over and go back to sleep, but the thunder kept on rolling through.
"So much for sleeping and jogging today. Probably better leave some extra time to drive to classes today."
"Sure as hell sounds like it. You coming straight home tonight?"
"With the all day tomorrow you bet. We might as well get our asses in gear."
This morning we had the time to take long leisurely showers and our time over breakfast. We gave ourselves an extra 15 minutes to make the drive this morning as it was still coming down pretty good.
Classes went pretty much as you would think. By the time they were over the storm had pretty much moved on. I still took it easy getting back to the apartment. I was still there first so started getting things together for supper.
Karl showed up at about his usual time and we settled in for the night. Class work was what was on the agenda tonight, at least for me, as it was unlikely I'd be in any mood to do it over the weekend.
Bedtime finally got there and Karl and I were quickly to sleep, to awaken to the usual 5:30 roust. I went jogging with Karl this morning as we had missed it yesterday, despite having the all day later on.
Karl and I were soon enough back to the apartment, showered and fed.
"Keep your mind on what you're doing today lover. Don't need you to fuck up and give the coach an excuse."
"Precisely what I intended to do today. I'll give you a yell before I head home."
We kissed and I headed out for the rec center.
Everybody was on time today and it was a closed practice. We stretched out and got right to it. I concentrated on hitting all of my marks. The day wore on until the lunch break and I headed over to the student union, along with just about everybody else.
It was soon enough time to get back to the grind and we took it from the top and ran through the whole meet once again. I landed all of my triples solidly and didn't hear a single comment from either coach the whole day.
Nor did I hear an announcement about who was going to be the alternates this meet. So I had to stew for another three days.
I went and got my time in the pool and the whirlpool, got showered up and made my call to Karl.
It was obvious to Karl when I walked in the door that nothing had been resolved.
"Deep breaths lover. Obviously the coach didn't make an announcement today."
"Not a word about it. I'm sure I'm making it difficult for him as he didn't even have any notes for me today."
"Well, I suppose that's a good thing."
"Maybe, or if he has made the decision he didn't want to take his attention away from the guys who will be competeing."
"Sounds like you've already decided the coach is going to bench you."
"It's a possiblity I have to prepare myself for, no matter how much of a bonehead play it might be."
Karl just looked at me.
"Den, that is the first time I have EVER heard you critisize a coach. Maybe you had better be an alternate this time."
"It's just the frustration talking lover. I can see where the coach is coming from, no matter how unlikely it might be. He has to consider what's good for the team overall. If it comes to it I'll just have to sit there with a smile on my face."
"I know you better than that lover. You'll be up in arms and no two ways about it."
"Which will be the surest way to see me either off the team or permanently as an alternate."
"Don't see Dana and the guys sitting still for it any more than the stunt the coaches pulled at the beginning of the year."
"Neither do I. If the coach benches me this time I'm betting there will be more than one voice raised. They tasted victory at the all state and I'm betting they want more of it."
"No doubt in my mind whatsoever Den, but just how much shit do you think the coach will put up with?"
"Not much if any. Think I ought to say something to the guys quietly?"
"Absolutely not. The coach sees you talking to the guys and they do get up in arms about it he may well think you instigated it and cut you complelety from the squad."
"I guess you're right. Shit I'll just have to sit on my hands and the chips fall where they may."
"Sounds like the best thing to do to me Den."
We shortly thereafter had our supper and as we were cleaning up there was a knock at the door. I knew it wasn't likely to be Paul as I hadn't heard a car pull in. After having been served last week I let Karl go to the door. It was Mr Castanza.
"Just wanted to let you boys know that there won't be a dinner tomorrow night."
"Nothing wrong I hope?"
"Not a bit of it Karl. The Missus and I will just be going away for the day. I have a niece being baptised and we'll be gone all day and probably won't be back until late."
"Well then congratulations and have a safe trip."
"Thank you, and you boys be safe as well."
Mr Castanza left and Karl just turned to me.
"Well then do we go out tomorrow night or what?"
"We could I suppose. I wonder if Paul is going with them? If he is maybe we ought to have Cameron over here or take him out with us?"
"Either way works for me Den."
"Guess we'll cross the bridge in the morning."
We finished cleaning up and settled in for the night in front of the tube.
Sunday morning and we were up and out. The Castanzas were just pulling out of the driveway when we were coming down the stairs. I didn't see Paul with them, so concluded that he would be jogging with us today.
Over to campus and Aiden and Gordon were there waiting. I looked across the quad but didn't see Paul or Cameron on their way. So we waited a few minutes and the guys came out of the dorm and headed over.
"You guys have any plans tonight with the parents gone?"
"Nope, just hanging. We'll probably head out to Rons."
"If you're willing to be brave, you can still come over and Karl and I will cook. It probably won't be anywhere near as good as your mothers though."
"Thanks, but I'm not that brave Den."
"Yeah me either."
"Have it your way. Aiden,Gordon how about you guys?"
"Think we'll pass as well Den. We've still got a shitload of work to do for tomorrow."
Our laps were soon enough finished and we all went our seperate ways for the day.
"So what are we going to do for the rest of the day lover?"
"I'm all for just kicking back and relaxing. There's the mandatory practice Tuesday and then onto the bus Friday and the meet Saturday, even if I don't compete. Two days after that is the Brown trial. Admittedly it doesn't look like I'll have any part in it. There is still the whole thing with the frat to be resolved, not to mention the lawsuit that I have no idea where it is going, and the rest of the season and the all state again."
"Geez, when you put it like that Den doesn't sound like we'll have any peace for a hell of a long time."
"We may very well not lover, so take our ease while we can."
