Karl certainly called that one. It took me forever to get to sleep that night.
Saturday morning we were up and out and our laps done. I considered asking Paul and Cam now to give them time to discuss it, but didn't, not in front of Aiden and Gordon. Karl and I went back to the apartment for breakfast and I headed for the rec center for open practice.
Naturally Josh and Greg were there. Neither one of them said anything with all of the guys around. I did a complete runthrough today and then hit the pool for a bit. When I finally got to the whirlpool Josh and Greg were there.
"You guys have a better workout today?"
"Yeah we got through it better than the other day. Now, nobodies around, what about that other thing?"
"I had to scrap the original plan. There are complications at the other end. I'm thinking about alternatives."
"Such as?"
"I'm not at liberty to say just yet, but I hope to have some word by Monday."
"Guess we'll just have to wait then."
They got up and headed out and at that point Aiden and Gordon joined me.
"Wasn't that the two new guys for the team? What were they looking so disgusted about?"
"Not up for public discussion Aiden."
"Got it. So what up?"
"Not alot just finished for the day and heading home shortly."
"Things all set for the next meet?"
"As far as I know they are. 3 weeks from today and here against Pemberton."
"They were pretty easy to take last year as memory serves."
"Not any of them are easy Gordon, but we did handle them."
"Well from what we've seen the team looks damn solid, so I'm betting this is a done deal."
"We can't think that way Gordon. That leads to complacentcy and that will cost us meets."
"Yeah I guess I can understand that."
I had enough of the whirlpool at that point.
"I'll catch you guys in the morning."
It was back to the apartment.
"How was practice lover?"
"Fine, just about everybody seems to be on their game."
"Just about?"
"Greg and Josh had a better day of it from what I could see, but I've seen them do better in just the last few weeks."
"So did you stop and talk to Paul and Cam?"
"No, not something I wanted to ask them at the dorm. That could bring them to the attention of Greg and Josh which probably wouldn't be a good thing if they end up refusing."
"What are you going to do if they do refuse?"
"Not sure. Much as I would dislike to do it I could ask Gordon and Aiden. If they say no as well I don't know what the hell to do."
"Think McEmbers could be of any help?"
"I wouldn't even ask him Karl. That would be putting him in one hell of a spot."
"I didn't mean him personally Den, but he does know his guys out at the club."
"I suppose it is a possibility, but that's a long shot at best. Maybe I'll get lucky and it will resolve itself with somebody they find on their own."
"That's a pretty slim chance and a risk I'm betting they aren't willing to take. They pick the wrong person with a big mouth or who doesn't really give a shit about them and they could well be shattered by the whole thing."
"Don't I know it."
"So looks like Paul is your best hope."
"At this point yeah. Guess I'll see what he has to say about it tomorrow night."
Not long after we had or supper and just settled in for the night.
Bright and early Sunday and we were up and out and over to the campus for or jogging. Paul and Cameron seemed happier than normal this morning, but I wasn't going to question them in front of Gordon and Aiden.
Our laps done Karl and I headed back to the apartment and settled in to getting some work done until I heard the guys pull in. It was soon downstairs for supper and soon enough we had the table cleared.
"Paul, Cam, can you guys come up for a few. I've something I need to talk to you about."
Without a word they came up the stairs, hand in hand I noticed.
When we were finally settled I put it to them.
"Paul, I've got a couple of guys who are where you were last spring. I was wondering if you might help them out?"
"Denny, if you had asked even last weekend I would have been right there for you, but.....well..... Cameron and I have finally been together and discovered that we have real feelings for each other."
"Say no more Paul and congratulations. I hope you guys have a long and happy run."
"I bet I know who you're talking about Den."
"Not that I'm either going to confirm or deny Cam, but who do you think it is?"
"The two guys who made the gymnastics team this year. They been awfully antcy in the showers the last few days. That also answers the question of why wouldn't you do it yourself, other than Karl would beat the snot out of you."
"Yeah that would just make it too weird no matter how it worked out. Your life is complicated enough Den."
"That's true enough Paul. Guess I'm going to have to come up with something else."
"Why don't you ask either Gordon or Aiden?"
"Because I think they are much to dedicated to each other Cam, and it isn't worth it to cause them any grief."
"Guess I can understand that. So what the hell are you going to do now?"
"Hell if I know. Hope I can come up with something though."
"Good luck with that Den. We've still got some work to do tonight so we're heading back to campus."
"Ok guys see you in the morning."
Cam and Paul left us and I sat there trying to come up with another plan.
"Give it a rest lover. The harder you think about it the less is going to make itself known to you."
"You're probably right. The answer will probably come to me when I least expect it, like 3 am."
"With your luck yeah."
We sat and watched the tube for a while before we finally crashed out for the night.
Monday morning and the routine began once again. After our laps were run and Karl and I had gone home and returned to campus, my first two classes went about as expected. It was while I was waiting for my last class that Cam and Paul ran into me.
"Hey Den. Listen I don't know if this means anything, but your two guys from the team seemed a lot more loose in the showers this morning."
"Like I said last night I can neither confirm or deny who I'm talking about."
It did make me wonder if something had happened. I wasn't about to go digging to find out. If the guys had made some type of decision or break through it was up to them to tell me if they wanted me to know.
I made it through my last class and thought about just dropping by the Rec Center. I hadn't planned on working out today though. If I dropped by the center and didn't do some kind of workout, people would think that strange, so I just headed home.
When Karl got home he could easily see something was on my mind.
"What gives Den?"
"Cam and Paul noticed Greg and Josh didn't seem as uptight this morning as they have been the last few days."
"So this is probably a good thing right?"
"Probably as long as it doesn't come back and bite them in the ass at some point."
"And you're home early tonight because you didn't want to put any pressure on them to tell you right?"
"Yeah something like that. I didn't intend to work out today and if I dropped by the rec center and didn't workout in some way people would have thought it weird."
"Yeah probably. Well I'm sure it will keep until tomorrow."
"Yeah I hope so."
We had dinner and settled in for the night once again.
Tuesday morning saw us up and out at the usual time and over for our laps. We went back to the apartment for showers and breakfast and Karl headed in while I waited at home for my class to roll around.
Today was one of the days I had to attend as I was due for my review. There was the usual 15 minute discussion and then the reviews bwgan. Aeems I pulled the spot again.
"Well Mister Sawyer seems you are going along quite well. You certainly seem well on your way to passing the class if not with top grades to boot."
"Good to know I'm getting along so well."
"Have you been keeping an eye on the energy market in Europe?"
"I have and I'm seeing just what I thought I would. Prices are going up more than forecast, but without any seeming increase in proposed dividends."
"Seems then it was a wise choice on your part to change out the funds."
"So it would appear."
"Well I shall see you next time Mr Sawyer. I have someplace to be."
I went and grabbed a light lunch and killed time until the apparatus room was opened for practice. Greg and Josh did come in but didn't have anything to say in front of everybody. When I wasn't working out myself I did keep an eye on them and they did better today than the last time I had seen them. They both looked like they were working at full tilt.
"Did you have anything to do with their change in attitude Mr Sawyer?"
"Not that I know of coach. But they sure as hell look ready to take their shot to me."
"Me too. If they keep up this level of work between now and the final practice they'll have their shot."
I went and did a few more run throughs of routines and then headed for the pool. A bit later I hit the whirlpool and Greg and Josh came in shortly after me.
"You guys are looking better today."
"Yeah well what can I say? By the way you don't have to worry about that other situation anymore."
