To say that my heart came into my throat wouldn't have been an exaggeration. To have an injury before the season even started didn't bode well. I saw them start to bring out a guy on a gurney with his foot wrapped in an air splint. When I saw the face,it was somebody I didn't know and I think I started breathing again.
Turns out the guy had dropped a weight on his foot. If I had been thinking instead of reacting, I would have realized it was way to early for anyone to have been in the apparatus room.
Once I got my heartbeat back under control, I headed into get my work out. Not long afterward Aiden and Gordon came in and started their own workouts.
"Haven't seen much of you guys besides the jogging so far this year Den."
"What can I say. Living off campus is not conducive to hanging out."
"Yeah I suppose not. Still we ought to get together at least once in a while."
"Not this weekend as I'm sure you well know."
"Yeah we know there's a meet and we intend to be there. Going to be interesting after last year. Think there's going to be any hard feelings?"
"Hell if I know, but Larry never was one for making a lot of friends."
"Think they'll be surprised to see you on the squad?"
"After last season, I doubt it like hell, especially after I told their coach that I was going to be in it to win this year."
"Well, watch your back when you get there."
"Hell that's an ingrained habit now Gordon."
"Yeah after last year I'd sure as hell think so."
We all finished our workouts and headed to our individual homes.
"Hey lover, heard there was some excitement at the rec center today."
"Yeah somebody dropped a weight on their foot."
"Not good but better than something happening to somebody on the squad."
"True enough. Ran into Aiden and Gordon, and they want to hangout more."
"Guess we can work something out for next weekend."
"Yeah I think so, even if we just head out to Rons for supper or something."
"So you got everything your gonna need packed in the car?"
"I'll get it in the morning. I'm going to have to run from the last class to catch the bus."
"I'm sure they ain't leaving without you."
"Hope to hell not."
We had supper and got our school work done and on Friday morning we were up and out for the regular grind. Then it was back to the apartment and I made sure I had everything I neeeded and it was back to campus for classes. During the break after my second class I went to the rec center and made sure I got all of my equipment packed and stashed in the car until bus time.
I got back to my last class and then booked it over to the rec center and grabbed all of my stuff and got on the bus. I wasn't the last one to show up so I didn't have to take any ribbing.
Once everybody was loaded it was a 3 hour drive to Anderson. When we pulled in I was very surprised to see not just a couple of guys there but what looked like thier whole squad.
Coach got off the bus alone to speak to them before he allowed any of us to get off.
We all silently got off the bus and I was one of the last ones off. The guy I recognized as the squad leader from last year walked up to me.
"Dennis, we just all wanted you to know that there aren't any hard feelings about last year and there isn't going to be any monkey business." He stuck his hand out and I took it.
"I really appreciate you guys being stand up enough to come out here for this. Let's all have a good meet."
At that point each and every team member came by and shook all of our hands. Kinda made me feel good about the whole thing.
We soon got out room assignments sorted out and made our way over to their cafeteria for supper and the usual inspection of venue followed. We had first warm up in the morning, so once I made my call to Karl I was sacked out.
I was once again roomed with Dana, which was fine by me. We were both up early and hit the showers along with justa bout everybody else. It was downstairs and over to breakfast with the other team and then we were off to the venue for out warmup session.
he session went well and then we were off the floor while the home squad had their warmup. As usual with an away meet, i wwent off in a corner and pulled myself together.
When it was time we all lined upa dn headed out onto the floor and were greeted loudly by our guys. I was easy to spot Karl and all of the rest of them sitting together.
For now I had to put them out of my mind and concentrate on the job at hand. We were split up and my first rotation was the pommel horse. I watched the guy I was paired with do his routine and it was pretty solid. I then got up and did mine and I thought i made a good showing.
We next moved to the parrallel bars and we were both pretty good but he sistake a step out of his dismount, which was pretty unusual for the bars.
On to the rings and I looked to the coach and he nodded no, so it was the usual routine with only a double somersault dismount. I "stuck" my landing, where the other guy took a small step out of his.
It was then on to the vault and again I looked to coach and again he nodded no. I landed both vaults pretty solidly and the other guy did as well.
High bar and again the lok to coach and this time he nooded yes. I went through my routine and threw the triple dismount and came down and landed it solidly. I don't know if everybody had been expecting it or what, but there was certainly a foavorable reaction, not just from our guys, but those who were actual fans of the sport as well.
So now it was only the floor excercise to get through. My opposite number sis his first and though he had a high degree of difficulty, hhe wasn't doing the moves well. He dropped a rotation on one ofhis somersaults and a few othe litttle things.
Before I went up to perform I looked to coach and he looked up at the board and nodded no this time as well. So on my last tumbling run itw was ended with the double and not a triple.
And then I was done. I could look at the board. It wsa pretty obvious that we had outperformed them all the way around and it was no surprise to me when we were announced the winners of the meet.
After all was said and done we headed into the showers and there was a lot of mutal backslapping done as we got ourselves cleaned up and organized. Soon we were out to have a late lunch and then over to clean out our rooms and load the bus.
Once again the opposing squad showed up to shake our hands and to see us off. Their coachwas there as well.
"Well Mr Sawyer, you tols me last yea that your were going to take us on the floor this year and you certainly did."
"And your guys didn't make it that easy coach. We'll see you at the all state."
"That remains to be seen young man, though I have no doubt whatsoever that you folks will be there."
At which point we all got loaded up on the bus and headed back to campus. When we pulled in it was easy to see that we had a reception party brewing for us.
So it was off the bus and glad handing everybody for about a half hour before things finally died down. Aiden and Gordon were right there along with Paul and Cameron and Pete and Susan.
"How about we all hit Rons for supper?"
"Sounds fine to me Gordon, Karl and I will meet you out there as I want to get the car home so I don't have to stop later."
"Works for me. See you in a few. We'll try and grab the biggest booth."
I quickly made my way to the car and got myself and my gear into it and then home. Karl was right behind me and I just jumped into his car and we were off to Rons.
The guys did manage to grab one of the big booths and we slid in with the rest of them.
Gladys soon got all of our orders and our drinks were soon served.
"Damn Sennis, I never had any idea just how much that must take to do all of those moves!"
"Most people don't until they see it up close or try it Cam."
"But I got the impression from Karl that you were holding back on a few things?"
"Shush. Secret weapon for only when needed and I'm holding on to it until it is REALLY needed."
"Sorta like you did for last year at the all states Den?"
"Precisely Pete, so mums the word."
Our food arrived at that point and we all dug in. We were interupted a couple of times by well wishers from campus, but fianlly finished our meals and headed out.
karl and i were soon enough back to the apartment and up stairs and crashed out on the couch.
"Anderson didn't seem all that tough love. Just my imagination?"
"Not from what I saw on the scoreboard, but this is only the first meet of the year. Sometime it takes a bit to get going. I'm betting that just about the whole team did what i did this summer and kept right at it; they were motivated after taking the all state."
"Yeah I suppose they were and they needed to keep it going so they'd b ready to defend."
"Precisely."
We stayed on the couch for a while and then went and crshd for the night.
Sunday norning and Karl and I were out for our jogging and then back to the apartment for our showers and breakfast. School work took up the rest of the morning and after lunch I took another look at the European energy market. It sure looked like whoever had reached his gaol and controlled a goodly part of the flow of energy in its various forms through out a fair section of eastern Europe. Now to see just how that power was going to be weilded was another thing. I considered just what it might mean to my own imaginary portfolio. Most of what I had invested in was american based and the few overseas things I had invested in were more in the Asia market. The mutual funds I had invested in were also for the most part American based, so I felt I was in good shape.
Before i shut down for the day I decided to check my email. There were a vouple there from folks who had already heard about yesterdays win and I worked my way through them.
