I recognized the sound immediately. It was the active shooter warning.

Gordon just about froze in midstep. Aiden and I both grabbed him and made our way further inside the building and stayed in the main corridor. Rooms were emptying out and people congregated in front of the rooms and away from windows.

Gordon was shaking like a leaf in a high wind.

"Easy Gordon. It's probably just a drill and should be done with it in a few minutes."

"Yeah probably. We haven't had one yet. They did the bomb drill on Monday."

"Must have been after I left for the day."

We sat there and just shot the breeze for the next 20 minutes or so until the all clear siren sounded. I had known better than to try and call Karl during the alert, but my phone rang almost instantly.

"Where are you lover?"

"I'm in Cochran with Gordon and Aiden. Everything is fine."

"Gordon didn't flip out?"

"Just a little, but everything's fine now."

"Ok then. I'm heading home."

"I won't be that far behind you."

Things started to sort themselves out and I made sure Gordon and Aiden got into their room. I was headed out again when Pete was on his way in.

"Hey Den! Gordon make it through that ok?"

"Yeah he did both Aiden and I were with him. So how have your first days been this year?"

"I'm getting by. My roomie is a bit of a slug though. He's hardly spoken to me at all. Always has his nose in a book. Hey when can I get the fridge from last year?"

"Come over anytime, or I can bring it over whenever."

"Let me drop my books and I'll come and get it now."

Pete and I were soon off campus and over to the apartment. Pete did take a good look around while he was there and he was soon on his way back to campus with the fridge.

While Pete had been looking around Karl had gotten supper started.

"So what for tonight?"

"Chunked up the leftover ham and dropped it into a package of augrautin potatos and tossed in a can of peas. Should be ready in about a half hour."

"So where did you sit out the drill?"

"In the hallway of Bingham hall where my last class was. The Professor wasn't to happy having the class disrupted."

"I can well imagine, but at least it is out of the way."

I got the table set and supper was soon had. I helped clean up and then went to my computer to check on my portfolio for the day. I was still in pretty good shape as far as I could see. I saw to getting everything done for my classes for Friday and then Karl and I crashed out.

Friday morning and the usual routine was taken care of and we were off to classes. Which proved pretty uneventful. So now everybody was faced with what were they going to do with their first free weekend of the college year?

Well for some there was the first football game of the season. Personally, I was going to spend probably the better part of Saturday at the rec center and the apparatus room. Karl already had a project that needed to be researched, but that was tomorrow.

Tonight it was going to be quiet time spent just with Karl, at least that was what the intention was. The reality of it was that one of the neighbors decided to have a party that was both loud and long. Finally a little after 11 it quieted down.

"I hope to hell that doesn't end up being a weekly thing."

"Yeah that would suck on weekends where I have a meet here."

"Push came to shove love you could always crash at the frat."

"Right, at the frat on a Friday night? They're just as likely to be having a party, let alone open door night."

"I know you could get through open door night, the parties are another thing. Let's crash."

We went to bed at that point and were up and out for our jogging on Saturday morning. Karl and I had both taken our cars as I was staying on campus while he went home and worked on his project. After grabbing a little breakfast I headed over to the rec center. I had intended to go straight to the apparatus room, but it wasn't open. I checked at the front desk and they told me it would be open at noon. I had several hours to kill.

I didn't want to wear myself out before I even got into the apparatus room, so I just went outside and walked around campus for a bit.

"Hey Dennis!"

I turned to see it was Gary making his way towards me.

"Hey Gary. How's it going?"

"Pretty good as far as both classes and my back. The doctor told me he saw definite improvement."

"Outstanding! You hanging with the squad again this year?"

"Yeah Coach Warren asked me the other day to act as host and to keep an eye on you guys. What do you think of the new guy?"

"Asst coach Connors? Haven't had enough time with him yet to form an opinion, but I know pretty much everybody wasn't impressed by the little stunt they pulled on us."

"Do I want to know?"

"Nope, and if you haven't heard about it I'm not telling."

"You know I'll find out just as soon as the apparatus room opens, if not sooner right?"

"Yeah I know, but it won't be from me. It gets around that I told people about it, it sounds like sour grapes and I don't want that going into a new year, and my last one on the squad."

"I guess I can understand that. So you just hanging around until the room opens?"

"Yeah. Can't help but wonder why it isn't open this morning though."

"I heard they were doing some kind of maintainance in there this morning."

"That would do it."

"I'll catch you later Dennis. I've got to meet somebody in a few."

"Ok see you at practice."

I walked on a bit further.

"Heads up Dennis!"

I recognized the voice as being Devons of frisbee fame and immediately scanned the sky for an incoming frisbee. I did manage to snag it out of the air and whipped it back at Devon who sent it sailing to Carlton who sent it sailing at me again. We kept it up for a while until Devon had to chase it down.

"So how the hell was your summer?"

"Way too short. Karl and I did tie the knot."

"Good on you. We're going to wait until after we get out of school."

"We decided to get an apartment so we could be together this year so tieing the knot wasn't that big a decision."

We talked for a bit and then they were on their way. I still had time to kill. I made my way over to the student union and grabbed an early lunch and then walked a bit more to let it settle before I made my way back to the rec center.

The apparatus room was open by this time and I went into the locker room and changed and went to stretch out. I was by myself at this point so couldn't do anything as I didn't have a spotter. Not long after Greg and Josh showed up.

"Do we wait for coach?"

"He usually is around somewhere after they had an accident last year. Somebody who had no business being in here hurt himself. Normally that's the only reason the room is locked now."

"Well gentlemen, seems we can tell who the truly dedicated are."

"Good afternoon Coach Connors. I'm sure there'll be others along shortly."

"I'm sure Mr Sawyer. For now why don't you three get stretched and show me something."

We proceeded to stretch out and even as we were doing that several more of the guys showed up. I had decided to go and do a full run through today. I started with the vault and then pommel,to the parrallel bars and then the rings. finishing up with the high bar, where I did throw the triple, and my floor excercise.

"Impressive Mr Sawyer. I see a little room for improvement but not a heck of a lot."

"Thank you coach. Anything specific?"

"Just a few places where you could up your degree of difficulty. It could make a big difference to your overall scores."

"Let me just tell you something I told Coach Warren last year. Our previous coach was more interested in our doing a clean routine than degree of difficulty. He said if you can't do the routine clean consistently the degree of difficulty didn't make a whole lot of difference."

"There is a certain amount of truth to that frame of mind I am sure. Still I want you to think about upping your difficulty."

Now I could tell him about the triples I had incorporated into my routines but Coach Warren had given me the impression he wanted those under wraps until we had a closed practice; the first of which would be Tuesday.

I stayed a bit longer to watch the other guys and Gary was there doing the same.

"I'm not seeing a lot that needs work Dennis."

"Neither am I Gary. This, I think, is going to be one hell of a season."

"Hope so. I understand that the buses will be running again this year to."

"That's good to hear. Seems winning the All State does wonders for the budget."

"Then let's hope you guys started a long tradition last year. I heard what they pulled on you guys the other day. Sounded like a real dickhead move to me."

"Yeah here's hoping. As far as to what they did I'm thinking we should all just forget about it. Well, I'm outta here."

I went and hit the pool and the whirlpool. Once again Greg and Josh, and a couple of others, were there when I got there. I eased myself into the pool and there wasn't a comment made or and eyebrow raised.

Soon enough I was out of the pool and into the showers and out again. I got changed and called Karl to let him know I was on my way home.

Traffic was heavy for some reason and then I remembered it was parents weekend. So I just took my time getting home. I pulled into the driveway and over to our side. I got upstairs and Karl was busy at the stove.

"Took you long enough."

"Parents weekend. Traffic was heavy."

"Well get the table set dinner is ready."

I did and we sat down to eat. We finished in short order and got things cleaned up. I heard a car pull into the yard and soon enough there was a knock on our door.
