"Yes I can see that you do. Have a good evening Mr Sawyer."
"You as well Mr Terrentollo."
Angelo left and I was there with Stan.
"Is this going to end up being a problem Stan?"
"Doubt it like hell. Angelo has always been one to push. Your dad kinda of liked that he did. He claimed it kept him on his toes."
"Somehow I don't think that's going to be a problem. Anything I need to be made aware of?"
"Nope pretty standard day. If there was something I would have come and gotten you, Angelo not withstanding."
"Hear any rumblings about me being out front?"
"Not a word. Pretty much everybody was wondering when you were going to show up so it didn't really come as any surprise."
"That's good one less problem to worry about. Think there is going to be anything in the portfolios on Teramedies?"
"I'm doubting it. Your dad was pretty vehement about it when he instituted the policy."
"Good, we don't need to be pissing anybody off after having lost the Bartlett business."
"Oh then you haven't heard. He's making noises about not being happy with his new brokers and wanting to come back. Do we have him?"
"If he wants to come back and do business with us I should think we would be happy to have him."
"That's what I thought. We should make it easy for him?"
"Yeah we should, but don't give him the impression that we need to have his business. Who was his broker before?"
"I was handling it after the accident. Before it was your dads."
"Well seeing as I don't have my license yet can you handle it again?"
"Not a problem."
"Than I guess it's about time we call it a day."
Soon enough Al and I were back to the house. Supper was had and the house locked up and Karl and I were off to bed.
Again the week went pretty much the same with only the details changing a bit. Angelo gave me an imaginary $10,000 and told me to invest it and see how much money I could turn it into by the end of the July. He also wanted me to keep dertailed notes about why I made the decisions that I did.
Friday rolled around and I saw a familiar figure walking toward Stans office. A few minutes later I was called to Stans office. I walked in to find Mr Bartlett there.
"Good afternoon Mr Bartlett."
"Good afternoon Dennis. I see you're hard at work learning the business."
"I am sir. What can we do for you today?"
"I'm re-establishing my accounts with your company. I'm not seeing the growth with the folks I'm with now that I did when I had my accounts here."
"We'll be very happy to have you back Mr Bartlett. Mr Bellows,I am sure, will take good care of you."
"I'm sure he will, but I'd like you to handle my account."
"I'm sorry sir, but I still don't have my license, nor will until about a year from now."
"Yes I undersand that Dennis, but when the time comes."
"Of course sir. How is Gordon enjoying his summer?"
"He and Aiden are having quite the time of it, though I think you will be surprised at Gordon when you get back to school. He has engaged a professional trainer and is getting quite the physique now."
"Well I'm glad to know that he hasn't given up for the summer. He made some significant gains and I'd hate to have seen him loose what progress he made."
"Well he is certainly become very serious about it all. I just hope he doesn't get too carried away with it. Oh and before I forget congratulations on your upcoming nuptuals."
"Thank you sir. I should let you get back to your arrangements with Mr Bellows and I should get back to my training."
"Of course Dennis. Take care of yourself."
I went back to the floor and Angelo just looked at me.
"Father of a friend of mine and a potenially large account. Sometimes you have to schmooze a little."
"I do understand Mr Sawyer."
4:30 finally rolled around and things shutdown for the day. Soon enough everybody was out of the place and Al and I were on our way back to the house.
"You'll never guess who came into the office today."
"Not in the mood lover, who?
"Harrison Bartlett. He is coming back to us as he isn't happy with the folks he is with."
"Well that can't be a bad thing."
"Not at all. But what's got you in a mood?"
"Grades came in. I as right. I screwed up that one test and barely passed the course."
"But you did pass."
"Yeah."
"That must mean mine are in too."
"Yeah on the desk in the office."
I went into the office and grabbed the envelope and ripped it open. According to the transcript that I held I had failed every single course.
"No fucking way!"
Which brought an immediate response from Karl, Al, and Mrs Ohanlon.
"Dennis?"
"According to this I flunked every single course."
It was to late in the day to be calling the college, but I did call Stan Bellows.
"My apologies to Angelo on Monday morning and I don't know for how long beyond that. Something has come up that demands my immediate attention."
"Anything I need to be aware of that affects the business?"
"Not in the immediate future no."
"Then I'll see you when I see you."
"Thanks Stan."
I hung up and turned to face Karl and Al.
"What's the plan Den?"
"I'm heading for college Sunday night. I'm going to be the first thing Dean Evans sees Monday morning. You coming with?"
"Damn right I am. Where we going to be staying?"
"I would have thought that would be obvious. We're paying for a perfectly good apartment."
"Yeah that has one bedroom."
"And a futon for just in case. I'm sure you've slept on worse haven't you Al?"
"Without a doubt."
I found Mr Castanza's number and gave him a quick heads up that we would be there sometime Sunday afternoon.
"You think this is just a glitch or what Den?"
"I'm thinking or what, but more importantly who?"
"You think Anton has something to do with this?"
"Always a possibility, but to what end? Whoever did this, if it was intentional, has to know that I'd be up in arms and see it corrected before next term started."
"Could they use it to invalidate the all state standings?"
"They could try but I'm thinking that an investigation would be triggered before the sanctioning body acted on it."
"Maybe whoever is thinking really long term and is trying to see you disqualified academically from the squad next year?"
"Possible, but it should be cleared up long before then."
"Then this is pure harassment?"
"More than likely, but I'm not taking it lightly. The question is who and is it going to keep up all summer or what?"
"Supper's up boyo!"
We all went to the kitchen for supper and soon after we were finished Mrs Ohanlon was off for the weekend.
The after supper routine had been to either take a swim or hit the excercise room. I went to the room tonight, but strictly used the weight machine. I didn't have the concentration for the apparatus tonight.
I worked my way around the different stations on the machine until I was drenched in sweat, and I still didn't have myself any answers.
"Feel better now lover?"
"No I'm more frustrated now than when I came in. I can't for the life of me think who might be behind this. I mean Anton is the obvious choice, but to what end?"
"Like I said before maybe he's thinking long term and maybe it's just pure harassment."
"And maybe it's just a computer glitch, but I'm not counting on it."
"Me either. We heading over tomorrow for your workout?"
"Yeah, I paid for it I might just as well make the use of it."
We were in bed early and only snuggled tonight. Saturday morning we were up and got our jogging in and then we headed out to Edgeton.
We arrived and I went in and got changed up and was out to the floor and stretching out.
"Mr Sawyer!"
A voice I knew well. I turned,knowing who I would see.
"Coach Matthews what are you doing here?"
"Retirement disagreed with me, so here I am. I understand you may be in need of a coach?"
"I am and I hope to hell you will take the position."
"I will indeed Dennis, and my fee is covered by the facility so no worries there. I'm kind of the den daddy for the whole facility. That triple off of the high bar at the all states was impressive."
"Thank you. I'm working on a triple for my vault now."
"Well then let's hit everything else and save that for last."
What followed was one of the most intense training sessions I had ever been put through. Coach Matthews didn't have to really worry about anybody else but me and the individual attention was paying off.
I landed the triple vault after several hours of work. Not solidly, but I did land it.
"Ok Dennis, I think you've had enough for today. I'll see you next week?"
"That is the intent coach."
"Very well, until then. Karl, keep him safe."
"Will do coach."
I went to the locker room an got into my bathing suit for a bit of time in the jacuzzi. Soon enough I was showered and ready to head home.
"We stopping somewhere to eat before we hit the highway?"
"Suit yourself Karl, I'm to pooped to drive."
"Well there's a first, even if this isn't 'baby'."
We pulled into a drive through and got some burgers and drinks and where shortly on our way home.
It was still light out when we got home and I just had Karl pull the car into the garage and we went inside. I stepped into the office and noticed there were a couple of messages on the machine.
"Hey Den it's Pete. We getting together to do anything this summer before the wedding? Call me."
"Mr Sawyer, Mr Jacobs. We believe we have found your brothers foster parents. We're double checking through the backgrounds now, so this is just an update."
