"Ok Dennis you win. Agent Goulding will be taking over as your protection. Try and stay safe for the next 48 hours."
"Keep me informed about Al please?"
"Sure thing."
I went back into the competition but my mind wasn't on it. Why had this attack come? The team competition was over and by now the drug tests were verified. There wasn't any way to affect the betting now. A revenge strike? Always possible I suppose.
Revenge..........Andros or whoever wasn't the only one who might be seeking revenge against me. Larry's dad was still on the loose pending trial but I didn't really think he had anything to do with this. It wasn't his style at all. Still I mentioned it to agent Goulding so he could pass it on.
Who else was there? Kyle Grant was dead and there hadn't been anything heard from his parents. There was the guy from the frat that had tried to run me down, but that was a long shot at best.
All I could do was keep my eyes open for now. I took a look at the scoreboard after I don't know how much time to find that my high school squad was doing well in the individuals, and not just Eddie and Steve. Yeah there were going to be some medals passed out to the team again tonight.
The day wore on and when it was all said and done, the team had carried 2 golds 3 silvers and 3 bronze medals. Now it was time to see who got the medals for all around best. Anybody who knew the sport could do the math if they were inclined to but we all waited nonetheless.
Eddie Garcia had taken the gold and Steve had taken the bronze. Yes I could see a good deal of time with the press once I got home if I did fairly well at all.
We headed back to the Y for the evening. I knew I wasn't going to be able to get anywhere near the guys tonight so I waited until I could catch up with Karl and the family.
"Hell of a day Den."
"Hell of a day. I can see a press conference with those guys in my future."
"At the very least lover. Now you need to get settled for the night. You've got a big day ahead of you tomorrow."
"True enough. Team supper is in a few minutes."
I pulled Karl with me into an alcove and got my good night kiss from him before I sent him and the family on their way.
The team supper was had and I tried to stop at the high school teams rooms, but that section was pure bedlam.
I went on up to my room and got ready to crash out for the night. Right after the bedcheck I turned out the lights and fairly willed myself to sleep.
6AM and I was up and headed for the showers along with the rest of the teams on the floor. It was pretty damn quiet this morning. We went down and got our breakfast and then it was off to the stadium. Agent Goulding was right there with us today.
"Just to let you know Mr Sawyer, agent McCarthy is going to be fine. Whatever it was, was meant to incapacitate and not kill."
"Thanks I feel better knowing that."
I forced my attention to the floor now and watched as guys went through their routines. I watched the scoreboard closely now as I knew I wouldn't this afternoon.
The performances were all pretty good but none seemed exceptional. Still there was the afternoon session to get through. Myself along with some pretty stiff competition.
I got myself down to the locker room after the break and suited up along with the rest of the team. We all wished each other good luck and made our way out onto the floor. We started at the pommel horse and I remembered to point my toes. We moved on to the vaults and I landed solidly on both of them. Parrallel bars went well for me too. Again I was only paying attention to what I was doing. The afternoon wore on through rings and the floor excercize which I thought both went well. Finally it was the last routine to be done, the high bar. I knew I was going to have to throw the triple to take this particular event.
Again I paid no attention to whatever anyone else was doing, nor did I look to the scoreboard. I set my routine in mind and stepped up to the bar. I swung up into my first handstand and then swung through to my release moves and the reverse direction and back to another handstand. More swing throughs to a release another reverse direction and finally into the setup for my dismount. I was up through the first somersault.........the second.....midway through the third I spotted my landing and planted my feet. Not a step or a wobble, I had "stuck" it.
Again the crowd seemed to go wild, perhaps it was just wishful thinking on my part. I made my acknowledgements to the officials and went and took my seat. The team were all ready to glad hand me on the performance. I just suited up and waited until everything was done.
The final moves by the last person were done and I then looked up at the scoreboard. I scanned the entire thing. I had taken the gold in the high bar,a silver in vault and pommel and a bronze in the floor excercize.
I then tried to start adding things up for the overall gold as they hadn't posted that as yet. Turned out they were going to keep that as a surprise for the end of the presentations.
I could well hear the guys from the high school team in the competitors gallery as they were yelling and screaming for me. We went back stage and waited for them to call each of the individual medals and my ex team mate Chet Manning was right there backstage as well. Where I had taken the gold in the high bar he had taken the silver. For my silver in vault he had taken gold. My silver in pommel he had taken bronze and my bronze in floor he had taken the silver, along with taking another silver parrellel bars.
It didn't take much to figure this one out. Chet was going to take the overall gold it appeared to me. Which was fine as far as I was concerned. The meet was over and everybody had survived. Hopefully all of the bullshit would be over now.
Medal presentations were under way and Chet and I were both gracious to each other and the other medalists. When it finally came time to award the overall gold Chet was called out and took his position. I was called for the silver and someone whom I didn't know was called for the bronze. Again Chet was gracious to me and the bronze medalist as was I to them.
Finally we were allowed to get off of the floor and make our way back to the locker room and the practicalities of the sport once again. There were several officials standing there watching the handing out of cups this time. I gave them the sample and then made my way to the showers and finally got dressed and was out to get the bus back to the Y.
I knew that Karl and everyone would be waiting at the Y for me, but before I could even look for them it was the full court press form the media. They wanted pictures of me alone, with Chet, with the high school team, with all of us together. It took forever.
I finally got to get to Karl and the family and it was more "candid" pictures. The print media was finally satisfied but now it was the broadcast media turn. The big three networks,on to the regional people and the local stations here and finally to the stations at home. It finally got to the point that they had to ask everybody to let us go so that we could make our bed check. Yeah even though everything was done we had to adhere to the bed check, silly rules.
I did get a few seconds with Karl before I had to hustle upstairs. There was a certain amount of bedlam up here as well and I just made it to my room as coach came along to check.
"Congradulation Dennis. Next year we go for the gold."
"I certainly hope so coach."
I just slipped into my room and pulled out my phone and dialed Karl.
"Hey I understand lover. It was almost this bad when you took the high school gold. We'll have our time together tomorrow night."
"Damn right we will. I'll give you a call when I get off the interstate tomorrow. Let me know if the house is being covered by the media."
"That's almost a given lover."
"Yeah I know. I just don't want to come tearing up the street into a bunch of people."
"Sleep well lover."
"I'm going to try if things ever quiet down."
"Yeah I bet. Love you."
"Love you more."
I finally got to sleep a while later and at 6 am I was up and into the showers and then I made sure I had everything packed up. It was down to breakfast with the team and then onto the bus to head back to campus. I had hopes of getting off of the bus and going straight to my car and getting on the road for home.
No such luck. When we got back to the campus there was a welcoming commitee of both students and press. It seemed to take forever to get through them and make everybody happy. People wanted pictures taken with me and the team and some of them, like Dean Evans, just couldn't be refused. Finally about 2 oclock we were done.
I quickly checked the car over and threw my bag in the trunk. Agent Goulding was right there the whole time.
"So where do we stand?"
"I haven't been called off."
"Then either get in or find a ride. I'm heading home and no two ways about it."
He had an overnight bag which he tossed into the car and we were off.
5 hours later I pulled off the highway and called Karl.
"I should be there in about 20 minutes lover."
"Everybody and their brother is waiting on you Den."
"Wonderful."
