Thankfully the drive was uneventful. So as soon as we got to the venue it was registration for the event and getting our credentials and then an inspection of the venue and facilitites. Of course we were not the only ones going about things and there were some familiar faces from the season and a few from when I was in high school. Those were more surprised to see me here, but had nothing but well wishes for me.
There were also a good many faces I had never seen before. These were the teams from around the state that were too far away for them to be on our schedule. Everyone eyed one another, sizing up the competition.
Coach called us together and we got back on the bus and made our way to the Y where we would all be staying. The teams rooms were clustered together as I expected they would be. They were simple 10 X 10 rooms with not much more than a bed, locker for clothes, and a desk. Really just a place to sleep and truthfully that was all that any of us needed.
The gym facilities were at the teams full disposal for the time we were going to be there and I did take the time to look at them. About 4 my phone rang.
In the Y lobby waiting on you lover.
Be right out.
Was what I sent back and made my way to the lobby quickly. I found Karl and the family along with Millie,Peter, and Susan waiting on me.
I went straight into Karls arms and a much needed hug,and hand shake and pat on the back from Stan, a hug and peck on the cheek from Gert and Connie, a tackle from Bobbie. Then it was on to Millie for another hug and peck,a hearty handshake from Pete and a hug from Susan.
"So I take it everybody is settled in somewhere?"
"We're just a block away and 10 minutes from the venue,Dennis."
"Close enough I guess Stan. We've already been over there and checked things out. You guys have your tickets for all of the events?"
"Yeah, we're well prepared to watch everything."
"Sorry I won't be able to sit with you guys, but they have the participants all off in one area. If we've gotten our placement draw yet I haven't heard about it, so no telling right now if we're in the morning or afternoon lineup on Friday and Sunday."
"Wherever it falls we'll be there lover. So,early dinner or do you need to eat with the team?"
"Tonight I can get away with heading out with you guys. Tomorrow and Saturday night I have to eat with the team. Regardless I have to be in by 10,alone."
"Damn it!"
"Karl!"
"Sorry mom."
"Alright children. There seems to be a perfectly good bistro just across the street. Shall we?"
We made our way across the street and soon enough had a large table for us all.
"So Den,see any familiar faces yet?"
"A few, even hooked up with the high school team for a few. Steve and Eddie were a little surprised to see me. Seems most everybody else went out of state except Chet Banning.
"Chet always did give you a run for the money."
"Yep and no reason to believe he won't this time."
When the waitress came around and got our orders and I asked for an umopened bottle of water she gave me a bit of a look.
"You'll find a lot of people ordering it that way for the next several days. They are most likely competitors in the gymnastics meet this week."
"Well I guess that does make sense. Thank you for explaining."
Our meals were soon enough brought out and were quite good. We took a turn around the block after eating and just talked. Eventually the rest of the folks went along and gave Karl and me a few minutes together.
"Hang in there lover. It's only a few more days."
"I know Den, and after 6 months of you being in a coma, you'd think this would be a walk in the park."
"Nothing I'd like more than to break training love, but there's a lot at stake here and I don't mean just the meet."
"Yeah the shadow is a constant reminder."
"Hey Al's just doing his job."
"You finally found out his name?"
"All I had to do was ask."
"Anything come up on that front in the last couple of days?"
"Nothing that I've been made aware of,but Stimson doesn't report things to me."
"Yeah that would be a first, the government sharing information freely."
Eventually we found ourselves a shadow for our good night kiss. Yeah I know you'd think we were beyond that by now, but it was a strange city afterall.
Al and I made our way into the Y, found the coordinator and logged in for the night. I was up to my room and relaxing and simply waiting for the bed check and for Karl to text me. The coach checked in on me a few minutes after 10 and it was just waiting on Karl. He was actually early tonight. Our messagers were sent and I went lights out.
6am came and I was up and hitting the showers to be ready for the 7am team breakfast before heading over to the venue for the first day of competition, the high school team competitions.
By 8:30 we were seated in the special gallery for competitors. We weren't required to be here but it was always "good form" to show up. I tried to keep an eye out for Karl and the group, but the place was huge. My high school had drawn the morning round so that meant I could be out of here early tonight, unless there was a reason to stay for the medal presentations. That meant staying until the end of the high school rounds. I'd just have to wait and see how the rounds went.
The morning session started right at 9. With opening ceremonies concluded the teams took their starting positions. I tried to simply follow my high school team from rotation to rotation but my eyes kept on being drawn away by other perfomances. By noon we were down to the final few routines to be performed in the session. At this point it was looking pretty good for my former team, but there was still the whole afternoon session to contend with.
My phone buzzed.
They're looking good.
Yeah they r but the day is only half done.
Meet you at the concession stands for lunch?
Sure thing lover. Which side of stadium u on?
Same as u up to your right.
I looked up to my right and saw Karl waving at me. I waved back and headed out and hoped to hell I could meet up with him. It took me a few minutes to work my way through the crowds, but I finally found Karl and the family. "Competition was pretty stiff there this morning."
"Yeah it was, but so far the team is on top. No telling what this afternoon will bring though." "True enough. Guess it's going to be a long afternoon."
"Especially for the teams that went this morning. Here's hoping."
We all got something to eat eventually with barely enough time to get back to our seats for the beginning of the afternoon session.
The afternoon wore on and today, unlike when I was competeing, I did watch the board. It was fairly obvious to me by late in the session that my old team was at least going to be on the podium;the question now was where.
It finally got down to the last few excercises and everybody was watching closely. The team now stood in the gold medal position with only one more team left to finish. Everybody took their seats and waited. There was a slim numerical chance that the team would end up with the silver. It was the last team up to do the floor excercise. We watched and as far as I could tell these guys simply didn't have the chops from what I was seeing. Each of the members of the team went through their routines and the degree of difficulty and the presicion just weren't there.
The final member had made his run and we all waited for the score to be posted. I knew before it even came up that my high scholl team had taken the gold. Only a few seconds later I was proven right, and Karl and the family went nuts as did a good portion of the rest of the stadium. Seemed we were well represented here tonight.
I wanted to head towards the locker room to congradulate the guys, but I knew even with my credentials I wouldn't be allowed in. The team did stay with me for the medals ceremonies and then it was off back to the Y for the evening. I got to see Karl in the lobby of the Y before we all went into have our team supper.
"Hell of a day Den."
"Sure as hell was. Tomorrow promises to be another one I'm sure."
"Try and relax and get some sleep tonight. I'll text you early."
"I'll be in my room by 10."
"Yeah I remember the routine."
We snuck into a corner for our good night kiss and then I made my way to the dining hall with the rest of the team.
Between the end of dinner and bed check I did manage to find out that we were slated for the afternoon session tomorrow. I also got the chance to catch up to the old high school team and offer them my congradulations.
Bedcheck was done and Karl and I exchanged out texts and I told him we had drawn the afternoon session.
Soon enough Friday morning and we were up and out and to the venue to watch the morning session. The team all had their equipment with them and were ready to make the switch over.
Dresmire had drawn the morning session so this gave us an oppurtunity to watch them closely.
9 am and the teams came out on the floor. I was watching everybody of course but when the Dresmire team came onto the floor I had to take a double look.
I grabbed my phone and texted Karl.
Look at Dresmire team
Yeah so what?
Where r the two freshmen?
holy shit.
