I quickly opened it up.
Success! We finally got the records from the adoption
agency. Now all we have to do is try and trace the
family for the last 20 years.
Well it was progress at the very least. I closed the laptop down and grabbed the bag I had packed to live out of for the next week and a couple of days.
I got my stuff into the room I was sharing with Dana once again and then we headed over to the rec center for a mandatory practice.
The place was practically deserted at this point, which was fine by me. We all got changed up and stretched out. Again we went in team format today so coach could well see everyone on each piece of equipment.
Everyone was in top form today and when we broke for lunch it was already there for us. Coach had sent out to Tonys for a party platter of subs, as the cafeteria was only supplying breakfast and suppers for those few of us who were still on campus.
We were soon enough right back to it and the afternoon wore on.
"Ok guys, you're looking good out there. Take it easy if you want, but I'll be here every day almost all day. I'd like to see you all on Tuesday, but I'm not making it mandatory. And by the way, we'll be staying at the local Y with most of the other teams. Having said that, let me also say this. I don't want to hear about any practical jokes or outright attacks, physical or verbal, on any other competitor in the entire meet. Am I understood?"
"Yes Sir!"
"Fine now get the hell out of here."
So for me that meant the usual routine of hitting the pool and then the whirlpool. When I finally got back to my locker my phone had a text message.
Arrived home all safe and sound.
Which was a relief for me. So now what to do for the next 4 days? There was no studying to be done, most of the campus facilities were closed until the short summer session began in a couple of weeks. The only people I knew that were still on campus was the team, and as much time as I spent with them, I really didn't know any of them that well.
The shadow was still with me,but I hadn't even gotten to know his name, and he wasn't forthcoming with it. So, here I sat in a room with Dana who seemed equally as bored and at loose ends.
At least the computer network was still up and running as there was still work being done in a number of the admin offices and likely the instructors offices as well. So I booted up the laptop and did a little surfing, played a few games until Dana spoke up.
"Heading over to the cafeteria for supper Dennis, You coming with?"
"Might as well, can't dance."
It seemed the team had the same idea at the same time until I remembered that there was only going to be service at a specific time seeing as there were so few people left on campus. Those that were there all seemed to show up at the exact same time. It took a while for everybody to be served and the place was full of the usual chatter but much subdued in volume than usual.
After supper, out of sheer force of habit, I started to walk the route that Karl and I usually did after eating. Without him there it felt so wrong. I pulled out my phone and dailed Karl.
"Hey lover. Out walking?"
"How the hell did you know?"
"It's that time. Hell I'm halfway down to the park myself."
"Everybody doing ok back there?"
"Yeah everybody's fine and looking forward to going to the all states next week. Pete and his mom are even riding with us."
"I bet. Found out we're staying at the local Y, but I doubt we'll have much time to socialize, even during the high school competitions on Thursday and Saturday."
"Yeah got to keep an eye on the up and comings right?"
"Something like, though I doubt there's anybody left on our high school team from when I was there."
"A couple of the guys that were freshmen when we graduated might still be there."
"Yeah maybe Eddie Garcia or Steve Meyer. That would make them just finishing their junior years I think."
"Yeah. At least they won't be any competition for you next year."
"And I'll be done after that."
"As far as competing maybe lover."
"What you think I'll have time once I take over the business to coach or judge?"
"I'm betting that you will make time Den, at the very least you will attend the meets for the year I'm still there. You love it too much to quit cold turkey."
"Maybe, we'll see how that goes in a years time or there abouts. I'm almost back to the dorms love. I'll call you sometime tomorrow. You take it easy and be careful. Say hi to everybody for me. I love you."
"I love you more. Night lover."
I hung up and the shadow and I made our way into the dorm for the night. The was no studying to do so I ended up in the dayroom watching whatever it was they had on the tv. It didn't take long for me to get bored with that and I was back to the room with Dana.
"This is the week that sucks Den. There isn't a lot to do."
"Do we have to stay on campus all of the time?"
"Why? What did you have in mind?"
"Just about anything besides sitting on my hands for four days. I know there's a bowling alley in town, the lazer tag arena out at the mall, hell there's just walking the mall and the multiplex out there as well. I do know a club, but I doubt like hell you'd be interested and probably not a good idea before a meet anyways."
"Why would I not be interested in a club?"
"It has male dancers."
"Oh yeah right......not. But to answer the question, as long as we are in dorm by 10pm we're covered."
"So as long as we give ourselves plenty of time we can go into town and do stuff?"
"Basically yeah."
"Well I don't know just what I'll be doing tomorrow, but I'm not going to just sit here all day. You're welcome to come with."
"We'll see what kind of day it is in the morning. I'm betting you're waiting for Karl to message you before you crash?"
"Yeah but if you want to crash, I'll keep it down."
"Not a hell of a lot else to do."
I just grabbed a book and started to read until my phone buzzed and I exchanged nightly messages with Karl.
Sunday morning 5:45 and the shadow and I made the rounds of the quad and then went into breakfast. The team was there and we sat with them. There wasn't a whole lot being said this morning and soon enough the shadow and I were back across the quad to the dorm to shower up. Dana was back to the room by the time I got out of the shower.
"So what if anything are you up for today Dana?"
"You said there was a bowling alley. I haven't been bowling since I couldn't tell you when, is it ten pin or candle pin?"
"Hell if I know."
"Big balls or little balls?"
Was there a severe temptation to be a smart ass? Of course there was, but I didn't think Dana would appreciate it.
"Big balls."
"Good that's what I used to bowl. You any good?"
"I was starting to get the hang of it at the end of our last visit."
"Well maybe I can give you some pointers."
We got the shadow, everybody was used to having him around by this point, and headed out to the alleys.
With the campus virtually empty, getting around town was a lot easier and finding a parking space at the alleys was easy.
Dana and I got our shoes and selected our bowling balls and went to our alley. I tried to remember everything that Aiden had taught us not that long ago. Clearly though Dana was a heck of a lot better bowler than I was. We did 4 strings and he beat me by damn near double my pin count every time.
"Well at least that burned off a few calories. Head for the mall for lunch at the food court?"
"Sounds like a plan to me."
After checking the car over we piled back in and made the short trip to the mall. Again it was pretty empty with everyone gone for the summer. We all got what we wanted for lunch and then just walked the mall a bit. We decided we had enough excitement for the day and headed back to campus. I didn't want to just sit in the room so I went walking and called Karl.
"Was wondering how long it would take you to call."
"Yeah well Dana and I spent a little time in town today. We went to the bowling alley out of sheer boredom."
"Yeah I imagine everything on campus is shut down."
"Yep, even the cafeteria is only serving two meals and only at certain times."
"I bet Tony is cleaning up on you guys."
"I imagine he will. Dana and I hit the food court we were so close to the mall anyway."
"Sounds like you're getting awfully chummy with Dana."
"Yeah well he's my roomie for the next week. What am I suppose to do tell him to take a flying leap?"
"Of course not Den, just be careful. You don't need to go getting tongues wagging about the two of you."
"I suppose not, but everybody knows Dana is straight, well everybody on the team at least."
"Yeah probably, but given half a chance don't you think somebody might well start rumors that would take away from your or Danas concentration? Shit look how easy it was to screw with Larry Brown."
"You do have a point love. Guess I'll try and keep things to just me and the shadow, or get more guys involved. I just don't know how many of them have cars here to keep up."
"Just two more days love and then you're on the road to the all states."
"Yeah I suppose I could spend all day practicing, but then I'd be worn out for the competition. I'll think of something to keep occupied."
"Just don't get too creative lover."
"No that I'm saving for a week from tomorrow night."
"Well that sure as hell sounds promising."
"Win, lose, or draw we'll be celebrating lover."
"Count on it."
"I'm heading into the cafeteria for supper. I'll talk to you tomorrow."
"Later lover."
I walked into the cafeteria along with just about everybody else from the team. Dana was close behind me and for some reason the place got very quiet.
