Seeing as we were already at the mall we went into the asian buffet for supper. As it was a special occassion we had a champagne cocktail with dinner. My shadow only saluted us with water.
We finished supper without incident and made our way back to campus. Karl and I had our walk and our kiss and my shadow and I went into the frat.
It didn't take long for somebody to notice the ring on my finger and the whole place went a little nuts over it. By the time I made it upstairs to my room my arm was sore and my shoulder was probably fairly well bruised.
I loaded up the picture to my computer and went about composing the announcement and emailed it to people. It was only 20 minutes later when my email dinged. It was Aaron. He congratulated me and Karl and asked if we had set a date yet. I quickly emailed him back our thanks and a no to the date.
Then the thought hit me that if we were married over the summer, there was no reason that we shouldn't have an apartment for ourselves next year. Technically we couldn't live in the same dorm and the school only required that freshman live on campus. Then the further thought came to mind that I would be done after next year, but Karl would still have at least one more to go.
The latter was a problem for a bit later, the other bore thinking about before we headed home for the summer. I did a quick search for apartments to see just what we were looking at.
A small one bedroom apartment was going for $700 a month and that was in one of the less desireable neighborhoods. I put the whole thing on hold until I could get into it with Karl.
Our nightly messages were exchanged and I was soon asleep.
Tuesday morning and it was raining like crazy. I didn't even bother to get up right away. After a bit I did get up and go and shower and head over to the dorms for breakfast with the guys. Aiden noticed right away that we had rings on.
"Well it's about fucking time. Congrats to the both of you."
"Yeah they're beautiful."
"Thanks guys we certainly thought so."
"So you set a date yet?"
"Nope, but we're thinking over the summer."
"That doesn't give you a shitload of time to get things together."
"Well we had originally planned it for Christmas eve, but then that would be taking people away from their families. It was only going to be a small ceremony, but the reception was going to be a blast."
"Well whatever you do we wish you all the best."
"Speaking of what we might do Karl,we get married over the summer we should think about getting an apartment for next year at least."
"Damn, I hadn't even thought about that....or the year after."
"Something to consider. Apartments,at least the good ones, aren't going to be cheap."
"So we better start looking now?"
"Sure as hell better have something lined up before we leave for the summer."
"I'll look around this afternoon while you're at practice."
"Sounds like a plan to me."
We were all soon enough off to classes and the day went uneventfully.
I got back to the frat with over an hour to wait until the coach opened the apparatus room. So it was back to the emails. There were a load of them this afternoon from friends I had sent the annoucement to and from some that I didn't only because I didn't have their emails. I started to acknowledge them all and before I knew it, it was time to head to the Rec Center.
Once I got over there, with my shadow in tow, and changed I went into the room and coach was there already.
"Coach, what are we looking at this next meet?"
"Probably the toughest meet of the season. Dresmire is undefeated this season."
"One of my friends said he looked it up and that they've never beaten us before."
"Us or very few others over the years. Seems they have a couple of shit hot freshman on the squad this year and they've been lucky in my opinion."
"How so?"
"Other teams have had 'injuries' so they weren't running their 'A' team."
"So it looks like they'll be the favorite for the all states."
"No looks like they are at this point."
My shadow was right there within hearing distance and I could almost see the wheels turning in his head, probably along the same tracks as mine were.
"So if you were a betting man?"
"Smart money would have to be on Dresmire. You don't think?"
"Exactly what I'm thinking. Bet against Dresmire and they loose you clean up big time."
"That's a pretty ambitous plan and hard to make work."
"Considering all that's happened lately? Not so far fetched, especially if he has even just one of those freshman in his pocket."
My shadow was on his phone at this point.
"That phone call I bet will have the whole Dresmire team under a microscope within hours. Let's hope it shakes them up. For now go stretch out."
I went out with the rest of the guys and got ready to run through my routines. It was a closed session so when I got to the high bar I went and did the triple, and landed it solidly.
We had finally run all of the routines.
"Looking good guys. Take care of yourselves and don't let your studys slip. You all still need to qualify for next season after all."
I went and changed into my swimsuit and did a few laps before I hit the whirlpool. I was alone except for my shadow.
"I gave agent Stimson your thoughts on the Dresmire team. He thinks they are spot on."
"Good to know the grey matter works fine."
"He's thinking you ought to apply to the service. He thinks you're a natural."
"He's not the first to have that idea. One of the local officers at home keeps trying to get me to apply to the police academy."
"So maybe they both know something about you that you don't. Just something to think about."
"Maybe if I didn't already have a business to run once I get certified."
We got out of the whirlpool and showered up and went back to the frat. Karl was waiting in my room, sitting at my computer.
"So I'm betting you're finding what I found, that this isn't going to be cheap."
"No it isn't. About the only thing I'm even willing to take a look at is a grand a month and that is still being a tenant at will, which means we could get thrown out at any time."
"Yeah, that ones not happening."
"What if we went in with somebody else on a double bedroom?"
"And just who do we know well enough that we'd be willing to do that with?"
"Hell I think the only ones I'd even think about would be Aiden and Gordon."
"And then thaat would fall on Gordons shoulders. Aidens money for college was put aside a long time ago, but I bet there is damn little left over to kick in for rent. I'm betting Aiden would feel real guilty about that."
"Yeah you're probably right. Guess we'll just keep looking and hope something worthwhile turns up."
"So, when do we want to have our ceremony? People are asking."
"Yeah my email is getting overloaded to."
I went an grabed a calander and started looking at things.
"I'm looking at August first. It's a Saturday and gives us a week for a honeymoon and then almost a week after that before we have to be back on campus."
"Let me check with mom and dad and see if that works for them."
Karl got on his phone and had a quick conversation with his dad.
"That works for mom and dad."
"So I guess our next phone call is to Roland to see about a venue and a reception and someone to perform the ceremony?"
"After supper Den. I'm starving tonight."
We got my shadow and made our way over to the cafeteria for some supper. We ran into Aiden and Gordon and gave them the news for the date as well as Pete.
"Cripes Den I'm your roomie and I'm the last one to know?"
"Not like I see you every day now is it?"
"I suppose not. I better call mom and let her know to keep that date open."
"And I had better warn Mrs Ohanlon. She'll be fit to be tied I'm sure. And then Stan Bellows and then the lawyers ..... Karl...don't think me an ass, but what name are we going to go by?"
"Hell I haven't given that a bit of thought. Hyphenate it Holtz-Sawyer? Sawyer -Holtz? Each keep our own?"
"I don't think that last is an option except maybe for business purposes. Hell it may even be a question for the lawyers."
"Well we're going to be living in your house right,so if we have to go with just one name it should be yours Den. Plus you need to keep yours for the business."
"The same can be said for you love,at least I assume you're going to take over from your dad?"
"That was the plan yeah."
"We've got time to work it out. Hell we haven't even thought about where to go on our honeymoon."
"I'm open to suggestions Den."
"Right now I don't have any, but it is something for us to think about. First things first, we need to get in touch with Roland."
"Oh hell Den, you're not going to let Roland plan your wedding and reception. It'll be a fucking circus!"
"Hey Pete, it's what he does for a living now. There are professional standards he has to live up to I'm sure. Plus we'll be home in a couple of months and can rein him in then if we have to."
"Good luck with that."
"There is one thing Pete. Aaron will be standing up for Karl. Would you do me the honor of standing up for me?"
"What!????"
"You heard me. Will you stand up for me?"
"Just so long as I don't have to dance with Aaron or either of you, I'd be honored to do that for you Den."
"Thanks Pete. Now I guess we have got some arrangements to get started."
