That was all there was to it. Well in my mind, at least, it didn't take an Einstien to figure that one out. To me this had Teramedies written all over it.
I quickly responded
"A.T.?"
"Yes"
"Proof?"
"None"
"Hang in get better"
"Thanks"
I was sorely tempted to give the signal for Stimson to come over, but I didn't. I'd tell my passwrod guy in the morning I wanted contact and leave it up to Stimson to make his own arrangements.
Pete came in not too much later and he knew something wasn't sitting right.
"What now?"
I just pointed to the monitor which I hadn't turned off as I was thinking.
"Well damn. What are you going to do?"
"Let my password guy know I want to speak to Stimson."
11 came and Karl and I exchanged our messages for the night and I was soon asleep.
5:45 and I was up and out, with Aiden and Gordon behind.
"Strawberry...tangerine"
"Contact wanted."
The guy merely shook his head and was off.
Classes went about as you would expect and I was eventually back to my room. I swept it and then got things put away for the day. Soon enough there was a knock at my door.
It was Stimson and he just questioned me with his face.
"We're clean."
"Ok so what's the problem?"
"I emailed Mercer Campbell last night just to see how he was doing. He responded to me to be careful, that his teammates didn't jump him. I flat out asked if it was Teramedies and he said yes. I asked him if he had any proof and he said no. I don't know if that gives you anything to work with or not."
"Unfortunately it doesn't but it does confirm our suspicions. He is also right. You need to be damn careful."
"Hey I'm still putting up with this password thing every morning aren't I? I check the car before I get in. I don't know what the hell else I can do except go into hiding and that just plain isn't my style."
"Will you let me plant a guy on the gymnastics team to keep an eye on you these last two meets and the all states?"
"Not my call and you know it. I don't want it either. It could well spook the whole frigging team for a new guy to show up out of nowhere and that is the last damn thing I want. Load the venues with as many people as you want, but leave the team alone."
"I don't really need your permission Mr Sawyer."
"No you don't but I don't want to see the team messed with. They've all worked to damn hard this season. I don't know how far this all goes, but I'd like to think we earned all of our other victories this year, and I don't want to see that attitude screwed with at this point."
"I can't promise that there won't be somebody put with the team, but this is now something that I have to bring to my superiors and the call is theirs. I'll be sure to let them know your feelings on the subject. Anything else you need to talk to me about?"
"Not that I can think of,other than whoever is coming up with these passwords really needs to get a life."
Stimson just gave me a "I hear you" face and turned and left.
Karl was over soon enough and we went down to supper. We actually ended up being alone for a change.
"I talked to Stimson a little bit ago. He wants to plant somebody with the team until at least after the all states."
"And I know you love. You told him to stuff it didn't you?"
"In so many words yeah. A stranger showing up this late in the game will just set everybody off I think, and I don't know why."
"Yes you do whether you remember it or not is another question."
I sat there and thought about it for several minutes.
"Doug.....Henderson our junior year. He transfered in from......somewhere. He didn't really fit in well with the rest of us for a while and it cost us ....what 3 meets?"
"That's the one I was thinking of yeah."
Even this late there were still some memories that needed to be shaken loose.
"Regardless, he said it was up to his bosses now but he would make them aware of my feelings."
"So if they do plant somebody just ignore him and don't say anything to the others and it shouldn't screw with them."
"Operative word being shouldn't."
"Finish your food and let's call it a night. Like I said yesterday, I've got a feeling coach is going to work us hard tomorrow."
We finished our meals and took our walk about campus and had our good night kiss. Karl knew I was going to sack out early so there would be no 11pm message tonight.
I even slept in and didn't go jogging here on Saturday morning. I went down and got some breakfast and then waited until it was time to head over to the Rec Center for practice. I did jog over just to get the blood flowing and my passwors guy was right there to pass me again today.
"Tangerine.....ugli"
Made me wonder if my comment about getting a life had gotten back to somebody.
I got inside and changed and went out to the apparatus room. Other than the team it was strangely empty. There were always at least a couple of people around during practice. Soon enough Coach Warren came out.
"Alright then. Practice is going to remain closed from now on. I don't want any scouts seeing just what some of you are working on. Save that for the competitions and the all states. Stretch out and let's get to this team format."
Which for us meant that we were all going to work the same apparatus instead of spreading out. It would make a long day but serve to get us ready for the all states a little as this was the format that they used.
Everybody was pretty much on their game today as we went from the pommel horse to the vault and then to parrallel bars and the rings.
When we got to the high bar Coach called out to me.
"Dennis throw the triple today please and for all closed practices from now on."
I did my usual routine and threw the triple on my dismount and only wobbled a little bit on my landing.
We all moved on to our floor excercise and then we broke for lunch. Everybody put on their "sweats" and headed over to the student union to grab something quick and then get back to practice.
After lunch we ran the whole thing again. This time I landed the triple without the wobble.
"OK everybody good practice. I'll see you all on Tuesday for our final. Dennis a word please."
I followed Coach into his office.
"I had a really strange phone call this morning Dennis. Dean Evans wanted to add some personnel to the team. You know anything about that?"
"Damn it! yeah I do. It's involved with this whole gambling thing. I can't go into details but I'm against having anybody added at this late date. First off it's highly unusual for something like this to happen this late in the season if I'm not mistaken."
"You aren't."
"Which I'm betting everybody on the team knows. This is going to put everybody on edge if you allow it and that just won't help us at all. I told the guy wanting to do this the same thing. We don't need to be screwed with right now."
"Pretty much what I told Dean Evans, and he told me it was what he had expected to hear. We'll be watched, but from a distance. How long have you been sitting on this Dennis?"
"Pretty much since the meet was forfeited to us."
"So what happened to change things?"
"Mercer Campbell, the one who was being blackmailed, got beaten up a while back. I emailed him to see how he was doing and he told me to be careful his teammates didn't do it to him. I asked some questions and got answers I didn't like and reported them. This is the upshot of it."
"And we've been however loosely under watch since then?"
"I don't know about the team, but I have been yeah."
"I think I'd be a basket case if it were me."
"I've tried not to let it bother me. I'm kinda used to watching my back with the last year and a half I've been having."
"Oh?"
"Too long to go into Coach and hopefully pretty much all in the past at this point."
"Okay. Well the extra help has already been refused so just be damn careful Dennis. Now get out of here."
I went and hit the whirlpool without doing my regular laps today, showered up and headed back to the dorm.
When I got there Pete was out so I swept the room just because and it was green. The phone beeped with the downloaded photos from the camera and it only showed me, Pete, and Susan.
I stretched out on my bed and must have fallen asleep because the next thing I knew there was a knocking at my door. I opened it to find Karl there with a pizza box in hand.
"We haven't had a pizza party in forever Den and it's your favorite, a meat lovers."
"Then how can I refuse? Get in here."
I went and turned my stereo on,but not loudly. We sat on the floor and ate our pizza and just plain relaxed for I don't know how long. We eentuallly finished the pizza and cleaned things up and went for our walk.
It was quiet around the campus for a Saturday night, but that was alright with us. We had our kiss, well more than one, and I headed into the dorm, only to find a big red heart on the dryboard. I made my way down to the dayroom for a bit until I finally got the all clear from Pete.
I didn't know how long it had been betweeen the time Karl and I left the room and the time Pete and Susan got there so I swept the room just to be sure. It was again green so I checked my phone for the pictures from the camera and there was nothing startleing there either.
I did a quick check of my email and found that there was one from the lawyers.
Note to the curious..... the use of the word "ugli" is not a typo. According to my dictionary it is a misshapened Jamaican citrus fruit that is a three way cross between a grapefruit, orange, and tangerine.
