We were up again at 6 so we had plenty of time to have breakfast and catch a boat from our hotel to the Hollywood Studios.

We entered the Studios to find ourselves in the "golden age" of Hollywood, the 1950s. The front part of the park was mostly shopping and dining oppurtunities.

The first real attraction we came to was the Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular. This was exactly what it sounded like. The show opened with Indy breaking into a temple, avoiding several traps and then the iconic scene of him blanacing the sand against the weight of the golden idol. If you are a fan of the movies you know what came next. Yep that big ass boulder came rolling after Indy and you would have sworn he got rolled over. Everything turned out ok as it was a well rehearsed stunt. Then they started off by asking for volunteers, and mine was the first hand up. Yes I know the old axiom "Never volunteer", but hey this was Disney World. What was the worst that could happen?

I was picked to be a "featured player" Myself and a young lady were to be the featured screamers of the piece. Along with the other extras that were selected from the audience. When I let out my sample scream, I got a lot of "verbrato" into it and saw more than one head peer out from around the scenery that was being moved.

We extras were supposed to be the entire population of Cairo for the street scenes from the first movie "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

The premise was that they were shooting and the whole scene from the first fight sequence through to the truck being blown up was re-enacted.

It was great fun to be involved in. The extras were dismissed and the final scene was to be shot. This on was where the Ark had been loaded on the plane and the fight sequence between Indy and the nazis was staged culminating in the explosion of the aircraft. Let me tell you those flames were real and hot even as far away as we were back in our seats at that point.

In between the scenes were little "bits". The one that standsout the most to me was where one of the primary actors used one of us "extras" to show how a fight was staged. It really looked like she was connecting with the poor guy. It soon became obvious that the guy was a plant and an accredited stuntman.

We next were on our way over to "Honey I Shrunk the Audience". We were first allowed to explore the backyard of the house where everything was oversized as if we had been shrunk. Soon enough we were into the theatre which incorporated a few special effects to complete the illusion that we had been shrunk. We were evetually returned to normal size and moved on once again.

We were just about to the "Star Tours" attraction when all of a sudden we were confronted with Chewbakka. I got a picture of Karl being near smotherd by the tall wookie. We moved on into line for the "Star Tours" attraction.

This was another motion controll ride. We were supposed to be going on a nice gentle tour of the stars,we ended up being in the middle of a space battle and our craft had to do some pretty serious manuevering to keep from being blownup. Soon enough were back safely on the ground.

From here we moved onto the "Muppet Vision 3D." A tour of the Muppet studios as well as an excursion over into the Muppets Labs. All very well done and entertaining.

By this time we were ready for lunch and made our way back over to the "Backlot Express". Just your regular fastfood fare.

From there we went to take the tram ride known as the "Back Lot Tour." A somewhat behind the scenes look at things. We rode past the exterior of the house being used for "The Golden Girls" as well as other "neighborhood streets".

The bone yard had the life size mock ups of the exteriors of every thing from the space ship used in "Flight of the Navigator" to a section of the large gears from "Dick Tracy" and the street car from "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" as well as all kinds of vehicles. There was even a set that would have you believing you were in New York City.

The capper to the whole tour was Catastrophe Canyon. It was set up to look like an oil drillers sight. Operations were in full swing when there was an explosion and ensuing fire, with a tanker being precariously balanced and slipping towards you.

All of a sudden there were hundreds of gallons of water streaming over you to put out the fire and everything was reset for the next tram to come through. Our tram moved out and around the back of the set to show just how much engineering had to go into making a scene like that come to life. The amount of piping alone was enough to stagger me.

We next made our way over to the Grumanns Chinese theatre, which houses the "Great Movie Ride". On the way into the attraction you are surrounded by all kinds of movie memorabilia. From the gown Liz Taylor wore in "Cleopatra" to the Lost Ark of the Covenant from "Indiana Jone and the Lost Ark" and everything in between. A movies lovers nirvana.

The attraction itself was another tram sytle ride through sets and movie clips and a bit of a set up with your tour guide. Altogether a movie lovers delight.

We didn't have a lot of interest in the animation studios or attractions that were available here so moved up Sunset Boulevard.

Our first encounter here was the "Twilight Zone Tower of Terror." You entered a 50's style hotel lobby and are confronted with Rod Serling prepping for a trip into the Twilight Zone. Seated in a elevator car you are whisked up to your floor and the car is guided through the corridors and then you are presented with a view over the Disney park before the elevator "slips" and you are raised back to your floor and then the bottom drops out of everything and you are in free fall for approximately 11 stories.

Naturally you are safely returned to the ground to move on to your next adventure.

In our case we had to take a few minutes for our stomachs to catch up with us.

We then moved across the boulevard to the "Rocking Roller Coaster featuring Aerosmith".

You are on a tour of the recording studio when you happen into the session with Areosmith. They are late for a concert appearance and they invite you along for the ride. A limo should be pulling up in the alley for you in just a moment.

You board your "limo" and immediately accelerate through a ride from the studio, through Hollywood and finally to the concert venue.

We once again had to wait for our stomachs to catch up with us.

We had pretty much done all that we had intended to do here and it was only mid afternoon. We caught the boat back to our hotel and tried to decide what to do for the rest of the day.

"Shall we just kick back at the beach or do you want to do something else?"

"Yeah I think relaxing for the rest of the day may well be a good thing. I'm starting to get a little bit worn down."

So it was up to our room for our bathing suits and then down to the pool/beach area to relax for a few hours. We did get caught up in a game of vollyball with a few other folks.

After a while we decided that we would take the car and spend the early evening wandering around Downtown Disney. A collection of shops and restaurnts.

Once we got there and found a place to park we started at one end of the concourse and started to work our way to the other end. The dining options were plentiful, but we finally ended up at Ragland Road.

An Irish setting and we ended up in the bar, and from what I gathered we were lucky to get in there. The entertainment was in full swing when we got seated and we both had a Guiness with our meal.

There was a guy and girl seated just next to us and the guy was really getting into the entertainement. I heard the girl exclaim that the guy was getting to loud. The guy replies that it was an Irish pub, there was no such things as too loud. The waitress at the bar simply exclaimed "Damn right!"

I ended up getting the Banging Bangers and Mash, while Karl had the OMG Burger. We passed on dessert here as we had heard there was a Ghirardelli chocolate store further down the concourse.

We enjoyed our walk along and even went into a few of the shops, though we weren't really looking for anything. The shops were ones we didn't normally have access to at home and it was more for the expierence than anything else.

We did finally find the Ghirardelli shop and went in and got ourselves an ice cream sundae. We started back towards where we had parked.

You never think you're going to run into anybody you know when you visit a place like Disney.

"Dennis!"

It was of all people, Carlton and Devon, from my Historical Events class and occasionl frisbee players.

"Imagine running into you here!"

"Stranger things have happened I'm sure."

"You guys staying 'on property'?"

"Yeah we're over at the Contemporary."

"Nice. We're over at the Swan just outside of Epcot. So where have you guys done so far?"

"We rolled in on Saturday and started with the Magic Kingdom on Sunday, Epcot yesterday, and the Studios today. Thinking maybe we might just take tomorrow off and maybe check out some of the other resorts or may go to Universal or Seaworld, maybe even take the trek over to Tampa and go to Busch Gardens."

"We didn't roll in until Sunday night. We did Epcot yesterday and the Animal Kingdom this morning. When you go over there hit the Kilimanjaro Safari first thing. It starts getting hot out the animals head for the shade. Well you guys enjoy yourselves and we'll catch up back at school."

"You guys take care as well. Later."

We walked on back towards the car.

"I wonder what the odds of that happening were?"

"I would have said slim to none especially in the, what did I read? Something like over 30,000 acres that is the whole resort area?"

"Damn I knew it was big, but I didn't know it was THAT big. What say we take the day tomorrow and do a little exploring? I mean we have the car and the signs around here will likely get us where we want to be. Not like we can really get lost I don't think."

"Ok Karl. We can even sleep in a bit if we want."

"Does that mean we don't have to worry about how late we stay up tonight?"

"Why whatever did you have in mind sir?"

"Anything but sleep Den and don't give me that act."

"Then let's get back to our room."

Soon enough we were back to the car and found our way back to the hotel. Needless to say, the fireworks weren't the only thing that exploded that night.

Since I finished writing this chapter further word has come down from Disney. It now seems tha even some of the major attractions are being shutdown and the performers let go. Most noteably from this chapter, The Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular. Many other of the live shows and strolling performers have also been let go. Though I didn't use the the Toystory section of the studios, the roving army men have been let go as well.

It is,in my opinion, a sad day for Disney.

BTW just for the added chuckle, that "loud guy" at Ragland Road, was the real life me and my sister. It actually happened that way.

Next: Chapter 145
