6am and we were again up and down to breakfast, today at the Wave.
The monorail was taken to the transfer station where luck would have it,we were given the nose car to ride in over to Epcot. Again I had no idea just how expansive the Disney property was as it took us several minutes to get over to Epcot. Natuarlly the "big golfball" was the first thing we saw. Spaceship Earth is the real name for this attraction.
A nice relaxed ride through the history of the world.
Once done and out through the various attractions at the end of the attraction, we turned left and went into the Universe of Energy exhibit. Once again a nice relaxed ride through the Jurrassic period and how we got to fossil fuels and where the future of energy would be. The ride itself was powered by a bank of solar panels on the roof of the building.
Down the way and into GE Journey into tomorrow. Once again a relaxed ride showing us the possible life styles of the future from living under the sea to orbiting colonies and robot farming in the desert. The nice feature here was they gave you the option of how you wanted to end your trip.
General Motors, once again a nice relaxed ride through what has been called "a playful look at transportation." Some of the things man has tried were enough to make you cry.
We were headed back to work the other side of the park when we caught site of a pavilion that we hadn't really noticed in hitting the major attractions.
We went inside and found Body Wars. It is a motion controlled ride and much like the movie "Fantastic Voyage", shrunk you down and injected you into the body of a person. The mission, to remove an embedded splinter. The ride got a bit wild when we were near the heart. The mission succeeded naturallly and we were returned to the "real" world.
We then made our way across to "The Living Seas". A ride down to Seabase and a tram ride through a large tank. Somewhere on the order of 5 million gallons if I had heard right. The tram ended in a working scientific seabase. Several exhibits around giving a rather lot of information about the sea. There was a diving chamber located to one side and divers were going in and out of the tank to work with the various fish there. The central shaft of course provided specacular views of the entire tank. The dolphins were being particularly playful today and they completley ignored that 8 foot shark swimming around. Smaller fish of a great many varieties were about as was one of the giant sea turtles.
I was greatly surprised that the pictures I was taking through the glass were coming out so well. After who knows how long we had spent down here,we finally decided it was time to get going.
We took a different elevator back to the "surface" and found ourselves in close proximity to the Land pavilion.
It was getting close to lunch time,so we headed downstairs in the Land Pavilion and visited the "Farmers Market" there until we both had what we wanted for lunch. There was a regular sit down restuarant there but we hadn't made reservations so we though it might be a bit difficult to get in there.
After lunch we went back upstairs and took the boat ride through the hydroponics gardens. They were growing a vast variety of vegetables and fruits here without any soil whatsoever. The claim was that they provided a good percentage of the fruits and veggies used at the many easteries around the entire Disney property. They even have there own fish farm in there. There were two more attractions there to be seen, but the day was wearing on.
Out and to our right was "Journey Into Imgaination." Once again a nice relaxed ride and another one of "those" songs. We would probably drive people back at school nuts humming these songs for weeks after we got back.
Figment and Dream Finder take you through a journey showing you just what our senses and our minds can really imagine and some things that were just plain magical to watch occur. This is the only ride that offers a photo of you while you are riding in Epcot.
Once done here there was another attraction built in called "Captain Eo." It was what amounted to a 3D Micheal Jackson music video.
Once out of "Joureny Into Imagination, and through the dancing water jets, we made our way across the bridge to the World Showcase.
We turned left to go into Mexico. A pyramid like building the front portion of which is a galleria of various forms of Mexican art, some of it quite breathtaking.
Inside is the plaza of a "typical" Mexican town. Shops for everything and a boat ride that if you didn't know it was there you could easily miss.
Having already had lunch we didn't stop to sample any of the food here today. So after the boat ride were out and on to Norway.
Norwegian shops and crafts were on abundant display here and the boat ride where you almost go over the falls backwards was a bit of a surprise.
From here it was on to China. The heart of this area is the temple constructed here. It houses another 360 degree theatre and they had thankfully provided grab rails as the perspective of 360 degrees can give you vertigo as easily as riding in a airplane, which is exactly what you are doing at one point.
As with any of the countries represented here at the World Showcase there were both dining and shopping oppurtunities galore. I was sourly tempted to go crazy, but we weren't even half way around the World Showcase lagoon yet.
We crossed a small bridge and moved on to the Germany section. There was no attraction here other than the dining and shopping. There was an "oompah" band that was entertaining.
There were beer stiens galore and Black Forest clocks which I was sorely tempted to buy. I did give in to myself and got one small stein, not that I ever intended on using it.
Next it was over to Italy The main attraction here was the reproductions of various Italian works of statuary and architecture. There were the usual dining and shopping oppurtunites as well. The Capo De Monte' dining ware was elegant, but not something that I would even consider buying.
The American Journey pavilion was next. A multimedia show using audioanimitronics to their fullest. From the ride over on the Mayflower through the expansion west, the civil war,the great depression and on into more modern days. It was quite inspiring.
Japan was next on our whirlwind tour. AS we approached there was a performance going on at the main Pagoda. An exhibition of the art of drum playing and what I have to believe was a bit of Kabuki dancing as well.
Again there were multiple chances to be parted with large sums of money here. From fireworks to pearls and Kimonos to samuria swords it was all available. I seriously looked at a couple of kimonos, but at well over $100 dollars I had to pass.
There was a kite museum here as well that delved into the ancient art of kite flying and kite fighting as well. It was interesting to see as far as I was concenred.
On to Morocco, again mostly dining and shopping oppurtunities here. I did get one of the moroccan outer garments here as they were a heck of a lot more reasonable than the kimonos.
La Belle France was presented as the afternoon was wearing on. Again there was no persay attraction here, but the dining was supposed to be excellent, as were the shopping venues. There were some "street performers" here along with the artists that were practically a fixture of Paris.
We moved across the bridge to Britian. Before we investigated the shops, we made a reservation at the Rose and Crown pub for supper. We then made our way through the various shops and displays and I even got a picture or two of Mary Poppins at her meet and greet.
We still had a good hour and a half before our dinner reservation so we went and hit the Canada pavillion. There is another 360 degree presentation here which takes you all over the country. Shopping as well as dining venues abound. The barbecue was rumored to be the best anywhere and it was nearly impossible to get reservations at that venue.
We crossed back over to Britian and had ended up getting outside seats for our meal, which was fine as it was still rather pleasant outside. I decided to get a bit adventurous and ordered a Black and Tan to go with my dinner, a steak and kidney pie. Karl had the shepards pie.
We had soon enough finished our dinner and headed back out. As we left the Rose and Crown I heard some music and I drifted off in that direction. It was coming from the the same coutyard as we had seen Mary Poppins at earlier. A live band playing "British Invasion" style music. My parents had loved this when I was growing up and it brought back a few memories with them.
As it got close to time for the Illuminations show the group finished for the night. We headed out to the main lagoon once again and ended up between the two major gift shops at the head of the lagoon.
The lights dimmed all over the park, the music swelled and the laser lighs were going off all over. Images appeared as if floating on the water and if one turned around they could also be seen on Spacehip Earth. Music was synched to image and then one by one, each with its own theme music, the countries were lit up all around the park.
Once the countries had all been showcased, the music once again swelled and one of if not the biggest display of fireworks I had ever seen started going off, the lasers flashed in a mutitude of colors and from all different directions and this continued on for several minutes. It ended with a final volley of fireworks from all around the rim of the lagoon that lit up the sky beyond belief.
Rather than fighting the crowd to get out of the park Karl and I ducked into the gift shop. I once again loaded up with a flag pin from every one of the lands we visited today.
By the time we were out of the shop a fair amount of the people had made their way to the exits. We took our time and made our way back to the monorail and to the transfer station just outside of the Magic Kingdom and finally back to our hotel.
Pleasantly exhuasted from our whirlwind tour of the world we fairly collapsed into bed.
Tomorrows agenda? The Hollywood Studios.
Once again apoligies to the Disenyphiles out there. As I'm sure many of you know, and as I stated at the end of the last chapter, a good many of the fine people who provided a good deal of the "heart" of Disney have been let go. The drummers and dancers, the street performers of France and the British Revolution among many others. As I said before I think Disney as a whole is going to be not such a happy place anymore.
