When Pete made his exclamation, I went and looked in my full legnth mirror. My shoulder was serveral shades of black, blue and purple.
"I just stopped a guy from falling off a hill. I promise you Pete it looks worse than it feels really."
"That may be Den, but I'm speaking from experience. You better let it be for a few days. You could easily aggrevate it right into being useless."
"You know damn well I have a meet coming up Pete. I can't afford to not practice."
"You may think so Den, but I'm telling you not to push it. I bet your coach will tell you the same thing tomorrow when you go to practice."
"Yeah well we'll see about that. Right now, I'm going to sack out."
I was up right at 5:45 the next morning and got changed for jogging. Part of the bruise must have been visible as Gordon and Aiden both noticed.
"Damn Denny what the hell did you do to your shoulder?"
"Geez I wish all of you would give it a rest. My shoulder feels fine, just a little stiff. I'll work that out this afternoon."
We started our jog and picked Karl up and he damn sure noticed my shoulder but wisely said nothing. We completed our laps and the three of us went in to shower. When Gordon and Aiden saw the true extent of the bruise, both of their eyes got big, but they didn't say anything.
We got downstairs and Karl joined us for breakfast and then we were off to our classes. Monday went fairly easy and I was back to my room between the end of Accounting and the time the apparatus room opened.
A quick check of the email showed only spam once again. Maybe I was expecting too much. They had only been looking for a couple of weeks. I pretty much finished up what there was to do for Wenesday classes and headed over to the rec center.
I didn't even manage to finish changing before the coach was there.
"That's a pretty mean looking bruise My Sawyer. I think you had better sit the day out."
"Honest coach it isn't hurting me that much and with the meet in less than two weeks I need all the time I can get."
"Very well, but the first tremble or badly missed move I see, you are on the sidelines until further notice."
I went out and stretched out and went and started with my horse routine and that went well. I moved on to my vaults and they were ok and my shoulder wasn't screaming at me yet. Parallel bar routine went well and so did the high bar.
It was the rings that my shoulder finally caught up with me. One to many hard jerks and I lost my grip. Luckily I landed without a mishap.
"That is it Dennis! Office now please."
I picked myself up and headed into the office.
"I'm surprised you lasted that long Dennis."
The coach went to a cabinet and pulled out a bottle of something.
Take off your shirt Dennis. This is going to sting like hell but it should help your shoulder heal a little faster."
He was right. It was liquid fire against my skin as he massaged the ointment into my muscles.
"Change up and no shower or pool tonight. You can shower in the morning. You can show up for the mandatory practice, but you will NOT be working out tomorrow. I'll take a look at your shoulder on Wenesday and determine if you can get back to working out or not. Rest that shoulder and I don't mean maybe Dennis."
"Yes sir."
I went to change and more than one of the guys asked if I was going to be alright. I reassured them all that I would be fine for the meet.
When I got back to my room Pete was there working on stuff and looked to the clock.
"You're early. Shoulder finally give out on you?"
"Yeah I'm not to use it for anything really physical until at least Wenesday."
"Maybe next time you'll listen to me."
"Maybe, but I wouldn't count on it Pete. Guess I'll just rest until Karl gets here."
Karl showed up sooner than expected.
"I went by the room and you weren't there so I figured you be here. The shoulder hurting you?"
"Not in the sense of physical pain. It just gave out on me in the middle of my rings routine. Coach says I'm on the sidelines for at least tomorrow. He still wants me at practice though so now early day I'm sure."
"Let's head downstairs then."
Karl and I headed down to the cafeteria and had an uneventful supper and our walk. People were still talking about the "big game" and how we managed to win it. So for now at least it looked like I was yesterdays new; which suited me just fine.
We found our shadow for our good night kiss and I went upstairs to my room. No heart so I went in and Pete was out. I surfed the web until I got my usual message from Karl and I sent mine back. Pete showed up as I was getting ready for bed.
"The shoulder doesn't look as bad as it did last night if that's any consolation Den."
"It is a bit Pete. Means maybe the coach will let me start working out again on Wenesday. This being the first meet since he moved me up to the primary spot is going to be important. I want to really do well for the team."
"Yeah I hear ya Den. Just don't try and push it too hard."
"Yeah, well we'll see how things work out."
Soon enough the lights were out and I was off to the land of nod.
Sooner than wanted the 5:45 alarm went off and I rolled out and got my jogging stuff on. Both Gordon and Aiden were ready for me this morning and though they didn't say anything, they both made a point of looking at my shoulder. So it was down and out and our laps run and back in for our showers. Karl was soon over to the cafeteria and we all had our breakfast and off to classes.
Both classes went without a problem today and I was once again back to my room to wait until the apparatus room opened at 4 for our mandatory practice. I got my reading done for Thursday and then headed over to the rec center. I didn't change but went straight to the apparatus room.
"Dennis, how does your shoulder feel?"
"Feels fine coach."
"I'll check it later. Today I want you to keep your eyes open along with Dwayne and Gary."
"Yes sir."
Practice started and I was keeping any eye open for anything that seemed off. I paid particulat attention to Jack, the guy who I bumped from the squad. I noticed a couple of little things that were costing him tenths of a point here and there and tried to work on them with him.
"Why you taking such and interest in me Dennis?"
"Because god forbid something should happen to somebody, you should be the best that you can be. I mean look at how many times I was called up and I haven't even been on the squad the whole season."
"Yeah I suppose your right. Thanks for pointing things out."
Finally practice was over and the coach motioned me into the office.
"Shirt off Dennis and let me take a look."
I stripped off my shirt and coach went to probing my shoulder a bit.
"Looks and feels a lot better. Another shot of this liquid fire and you should be good to go by tomorrow, but be damn careful with your workout."
"I can do that coach."
The stuff did sting that's for sure. I soon enough got my shirt back on and headed out to find Karl waiting on me.
"So what's the verdict?"
"I can workout tomorrow so long as I don't push myself too hard."
"Like there's any chance of that happening."
"Hey I know how to take it easy if I have to."
"Yeah and I believe that because?"
"Because you love me."
"Well, there is that I suppose."
I let the suppose part slip as we headed back to the cafeteria. Dinner was soon over as was our walk. We had our good night kiss and I headed up to my room. Pete wasn't around at that point, but Aiden and Gordon were.
"How's your shoulder doing today Den?"
"Coach says it's looking ok and I can get back to working out tomorrow. I just have to take it easy."
Aiden didn't say anything and Gordon just raised an eyebrow as if to say 'yeah right.'
"Give it a rest you two. Unless there's something you want to talk about I'm calling it a night."
"We're good Den. See you in the morning."
I went into my room and booted the computer. Tonight there was something there from the lawyers simply tagged update.
I opened the email and it was to inform me that they were working on several leads and to date none of them had yeilded any information.
I surfed the web until Karl sent me his usual message and I replied with mine. Pete showed up about that time and lights were soon out for the night.
Wenesday morning went much as they all had and we were soon done with our laps and breakfast. We were off to classes and we were all seated when Mr McEmbers came into class and he was rather banged up.
"Just so satisfy everyones curiosity, there was a bit of a disturbance at my other job last night. End of subject."
Class then proceeded as usual, but I stopped in my way out.
"The club survived I hope?"
"Yeah a few glasses and a couple of tables. Someobody got 'handsy' last night and the dancer didn't appreciate it. I ended up having to break it up. I'll be fine Dennis now get out of here."
I headed out to my next class and got through Ethics and then went to grab some lunch.
Accoutning went well and then I had time to kill before the apparatus room opened. I went back by my room to drop things off. When I rounded the corner from the stairs I spotted a man standing in front of my door.
