I turned to the others.
"Mall stop?"
"Oh hell yes."
"Oh hell no. If what I have isn't good enough for him then the hell with him."
I went and turned Aiden around and walked him down the hall from the others.
"I know how you must feel Aiden, but I'm asking please let us do this for you. If Gordons dad is trying to make an effort,we don't want to go screwing things up just because he might think you're not good enough for his boy."
"This sucks Denny."
"I won't disagree with you, but you need to do this for Gordon just as much as you do for yourself."
"Fine then lets get this done with."
We quickly headed down to my car and were at the mall in minutes. We got into a mens store and found a clerk and got right to it.
30 minutes later Aiden was outfitted in a new pair of slacks, with a button down shirt , and a sports coat along with a new pair of shoes to replace the beat up pair of sneakers he was wearing. We made damn sure all tags were removed and Aidens other clothes went into a bag.
"We need to haul ass. We've only got 10 minutes to make it to Riskins."
I stayed within the speed limit and pulled in just behind the Bartletts limo.
"Now that's what I call timing."
"That's what I call better luck than management lover."
The limo had a little trouble finding a place to park and we waitied at the door for the Bartletts.
"Good evening gentlemen. Nice to see that being on time is still in fashion."
"Good evening sir, Mrs Bartlett."
We all went inside and were immediately shown to a table. The four of us were apparently all "raised right" as we waited until Mrs Bartlett was seated before we sat down. A little thing that didn't go unnoticed by Mr Bartlett.
Kevin was once again our waiter this evening and made the usual request for drinks. Mrs Bartlett set the tone by simply ordering coffee with a rather pointed look at her husband. He got a disgruntled look on is face but ordered coffee as well. It was coffee or water for everybody and I held my breath moment as it got around to Gordon.
"I'll have just water please."
Food orders were quickly placed and soon enough our salads were delivered.
"Well I can tell that dinner is going to be good. Any establishment that serves a "real" salad such as this should very well know what they're doing."
"We certainly thought so on our first trip here Mrs Bartlett."
"So Mr Harris, tell us about yourself please."
Not so much a question as a demand.
I could already see the storm clouds gathering around Gordons eyes, let alone Aidens.
"There's not yet much to tell sir. My father died when I was 9 and now both my mother and stepfather are both working people. I'm attending college on a trust fund set up by my birthfather."
"Working people you say?"
"Yes mother is a seamstress and my stepfather is shop foreman in a shoe manufacturing plant."
"And your heritage?"
"Father that is quite enough! I will not have Aiden questioned like an applicant for a job in one of your businesses. His 'pedigree' is none of your damn business."
It hadn't been shouted thank goodness so there were no embarassing stares, though Mrs Bartlett got a rather satisfied look.
Mr Bartlett wasn't so impressed. It looked like he was about to give Gordon whatfor, but then his look softened.
"Quite right son. My apologies Mr Harris."
I'm sure Gordons wasn't the only face with a surprised look on it.
"Apology accepted sir. I understand that you're just looking out for Gordons best interests, but my interests are in him and not what I can get out of a relationship with him."
That Aiden could be that insightful and understanding was a bit of a surprise to be sure. Mr Bartlett seemed a bit impressed as well.
"I see. Well.....shall we enjoy our dinners then?"
Our steaks were delivered in short order and everyone enjoyed their meals.
Kevin was back to ask about dessert.
"I can highly recommend their cheesecake. At least three inches high and not the usual chiffon, but a good solid cheeesecake."
"You make it sound positively decadent Mr Sawyer."
"It may well be Mrs Bartlett. All I know is that it is extremely good, at least to me."
"I'll second that motion Mrs Bartlett. We should probably do an extra lap in the morning just for the cheesecake."
"Goodness, then I suppose I shall have the cheesecake young man."
"Sounds like cheesecake all around young man."
"Very good sir."
We soon had our cheesecake drizzled with caramel sauce and the look on Mrs Barletts face after her first bite was a wonder to behold.
"Oh my that IS good. I can well understand why you might think and extra lap is in order Karl."
"As do I. You didn't understate the cheescake at all Dennis."
Was that some kind of a breakthrough? Dennis and not Mr Sawyer from Mr Bartlett? It was the first time all evening that he had used a first name, unlike Mrs Bartlett.
We were soon finished with our meals and were headed back out to our cars. Gordon and his mother exchanged kisses and the rest of us got a handshake as Gordon saw his mother to the car.
"Gentlemen I shall see you in the morning."
It was handshakes all around for Mr Bartlett, except for Gordon who got a hug from his father.
The four of us stood there as the limo pulled away.
"Well that went a hell of a lot better than I dreamt it would."
"Amen to that Aiden."
"You can say that again. I thought we were in for it when you stood up to your dad Gordon."
"I thought so too Dennis. I don't know what has come over him, but I think I like it."
"Let's hope it is permanent. Come on, we should be getting back to campus. I don't know about you guys but I still have stuff to do before I can crash."
"I'm sure we all do."
Soon enough we were back on campus and I gave Karl his goodnight kiss before he went across the quad to his dorm.
I was up to my room and no heart on the door tonight. Pete was there when I went in.
"Well look at you all dressed up. Does Karl know you had a date?"
"Karl was there. It was dinner with Gordons parents."
"Really? I don't see any blood."
"Actually it was pretty civilized once Gordon told his father to knock it off."
"Gordy mouthed off to his dad? Damn wish I could have seen that."
"I thought we were in for world war III,but Mr Bartlett took a deep breath and.....wait for it.......apologized to Aiden."
"Damn now I am pissed that I missed it."
I changed out of my good clothes and slipped on a pair of jeans and went to work on what I needed to get ready for tomorrows classes.
11 pm came as did Karls message and I sent mine back and was shortly crashed out.
5:45 and I rolled out of bed and got into my jogging stuff. I was out the door and Aiden and Gordon were right there waiting for me. We made our way outside and Mr Bartlett was waiting on us. We took off and Karl joined us and our laps were run without incident or words this morning.
Gordon and his father shared a brief hug before we headed up stairs and got showered and changed. I went down to the cafeteria for breakfast and Gordon and Aiden took off for other parts before classes. Karl was soon over to join me.
"That was a hell of a dinner."
"No shit. I hope this is the start of a new relationship with Gordon and his father. I had the feeling before this it was kind....pro forma. Now I'm hoping that they get to know each other."
"I bet it would sure make things a lot easier on both of them."
"I suppose only time will tell."
"You got that right."
"Well another Thursday to get in gear I guess love."
"Yeah, one more day closer to spring break. Have we decided if we're going anywhere?"
"We're waiting on what the lawyers turn up on the brother front."
"I hope you're not really holding your breath on that one lover. 19 years later it's going to be damn difficult if not damn near impossible to find him."
"I know but I have to hold out hope Karl."
"Yeah I hear ya, just let's not put life on hold too long."
"I hear you love. I'll try not to let that happen."
We had a quick kiss and then headed off to our classes.
Macro Economics seemed to drag on forever this morning and was I happy to get out of there. Now it was time to kill until Historical Events.
I grabbed a light lunch and just relaxed outside until it was time to head into class.
Historical events also seemed to take forever today. Was it because I was still thinking about coach Warren? I have to admit he had been at the back of my head all day, hell since I verified my suspicions.
Historical events finally ending I decided to go over to the atheletic center and get a bit of a work out in. I hit the weight room and worked my way around the different stations, uping my weight another 10 lbs this time.
I had a good sweat worked up by the time I finsihed getting around all of the stations. I then hit the stationary bike for a good 10 miles. Changing into my bathing suit I then went to the pool for a few easy laps.
Then I headed for the whirlpool. There was only one other person sitting in the pool and when I looked I saw it was Dana;the gymnastic team leader.
The whole thing about coach Warren came to the front of my mind unbidden. I slipped into the whirlpool with Dana.
"Hey Dennis."
"Hey."
We sat there for a few minutes without saying a word to each other. I decided as there wasn't anyone else around to put the cards on the table and let Dana decide what we should do.
"Dana, I need to talk to you......about coach Warren."
"Crap."
