The name Warren had set a little bell off in the back of my head. I took a closer look at his name tag "P. Warren". Whatever it was would have to wait until after practice.
"Is everyone here Mr Cosgrove?"
"Everyone except Dwayne Randal."
"Mr Randal, unfortunately will not be joining us for the forseeable future. He caught a round in the leg over the weekend. Not life threatening, but there was a good deal of muscle damage. It will be several weeks if not next year before Mr Randal will be able to compete. Which leaves us with only one alternate. Which of you is Mr Sawyer?"
"That would be me coach."
"Do us all a favor and stay healthy, that goes for the rest of you as well. Now let's see everybody over on the vault!"
We all proceeded to the vault and did our best move. So it went through all of the rest of the pieces of apparatus. Coach Warren didn't say a word throughout the whole thing. We finally gathered up when we were finished.
"Gentlemen you look to all be in fine shape. I may make a change or two but that is something that I need to think about. You will be informed. Practice next Tuesday."
I went and changed into my bathing suit and did a couple of laps and then went to the whirlpool. Once I showered and changed I was back to my room and that little bell in the back of my head was still going off.
I booted my computer and searched for P. Warren. It took a little digging but I finally uncovered the whole story. Coach Prescott Warren had been accused of doping his high school gymnastic squad. It had been four years ago and had been quite the scandal. He was finally acquitted of all charges.
I pulled the photo up to be sure. He had gotten rid of the moustache and the long sideburns, but it was the same guy.
I had to assume that the college had done thier due diligence before they hired the guy. Still it didn't sit very well with me.
Karl was soon over for supper and we went downstairs to the cafeteria. Everything had been cleaned up and you would never have known anything happened.
I must have been more preoccupied with Coach Warren then I had thought. Karl said something and I just automatically agreed.
"Dennis! Wake up! You just agreed to have sex in the middle of the quad at high noon. What the hell is going on?"
"Sorry. It's just we have a new coach and I'm having reservations."
"Why?"
"He was involved in a doping scandal about 4 years ago. I only remember as I was researching every team we might come up against. He was acquitted, but I can't shake the feeling that he was really innocent in the whole thing."
"And you're going to second guess the college for hiring him because?"
"No I'm not, but I'm sure as hell going to keep my eyes open. This team has worked to damn hard to have it screwed up now. We have four more meets before we can go to the all state in May. We have a damn good shot at taking those all states. I don't think the team would survive for next year if somebody screwed that up."
"You going to tell the rest of the team?"
"That's a damn good question. If I say anything I prejudice the whole team against the coach and they won't listen to him. If I don't and something happens then I've let everybody down. It's a no win for me whatever I do, unless of course I'm right, and I'm, not to sure that's a win either. Hell I can't be the only one who remembers the whole thing. Maybe somebody else will speak up first."
"Yeah maybe. You'll just have to wait and see I suppose. When's the next practice?"
"Next Tuesday. Guess I'll just have to wait and see if anything happens before then. I should get back upstairs and check on Gordon. It's probably been a hell of a day for him."
"Yeah probably. Can we at least get our walk in first?"
"We sure can lover."
We were out the door and around the campus for about a half hour and even though it was still light out we found a place for our nightly kiss before Karl headed back to his dorm and I headed upstairs.
I knocked on Gordons door and there was no answer so I walked on down to Aidens room and knocked there.
"It's open."
It was Aiden who had answered.
"Hey, just thought I had better check and see how things went today."
"It was rough for Gordy Den, but he got through it. He's still talking to Dr Garner and I need to go get him in a few. You coming with?"
"Only if you think it will help my being there."
"Don't see how the hell it can hurt."
"Why didn't you stay with him?"
"They will have been at it for about 3 hours by the time they're finished and Garner didn't want me hanging around so Gordon had to do for himself."
"Well then I guess we had better get going. Your car or mine?"
"Gordon will be looking for my car."
We made our way down to his car and then we were off campus and into a section of town I hadn't been through before. We finally got to the building where Garner had his office.
"Going to go inside and wait or sit here?"
"Garner asked me to wait outside for him when I got back."
Soon enough Dr Garner and Gordon came walking out of the building. Aiden got out of the car and got their attention and they came over. Even though he was dragging Gordon looked a lot calmer than he had this morning.
"Dennis, Aiden. I'll need to see Gordon again next week please. I've made the appointment for the same time as that seems to work well for everyone. Just keep showing him your support."
"Thank you doctor we'll see that he gets here."
At that point I moved into the back seat so Gordon could sit with Aiden. We hit a drive through so the guys could get some supper without having to go to the cafeteria. Soon enough Gordon and Aiden were back in Gordons room with Gordon tucked right into Aidens shoulder.
"Ok guys I'll be next door if you need me. Both of you try and get some sleep tonight."
"Dennis?"
"Yes Gordy?"
"Why did this happen?"
"I don't know Gordon. As far as I know they haven't released any information yet. Even if they get a definitive reason they might not share the information publicly."
"It HAS to be somebodies fault Den."
"You would think so, but it might not even have anything to do with the college. Could just be that the guy needed someplace with a lot of people and a lot of oppurtunity. We may never know. The guy sure as hell can't tell us."
Of course it was an assumption on my part that the coroners van had been for the shooter. There had been an almost complete lack of news either local or national over the whole thing, which kind of had me wondering what was going on.
"I'll keep my ears open Gordon and let you know if anything turns up."
At that point I went back to my room and cracked the books until Karl sent his 11pm message. I naturally sent mine back and then tried to go to sleep. I must have eventually succeeded as the alarm was going off next to my ear.
I was up and changed and out the door and Aiden and Gordon both were right there ready to go. When we got outside Harrison Bartlett was waiting on us. It wasn't a big one, but there was a bit of a smile on Gordons face. Karl joined us as we passed his dorm and our laps were soon done.
"Will the four of you boys join Mrs Bartlett and I for dinner this evening?"
Getting affirmative nods from everyone I accepted for all.
"We shall be pleased to join you sir. Where and what time?"
"Six, at that steakhouse near the interstate. I've been told that is is quite good."
"It is sir. Karl and I've been a couple of times and never been disappointed."
"Good then we'll see you at six."
Gordon, Aiden and I went upstairs to shower and change while Karl made his way back to his dorm.
"I wonder what father is up to this time?"
"Maybe he's just trying to be a dad Gordon. Maybe he has accepted you being with Aiden and he's trying to make nice."
"He's never done nice before Den."
"Always a first time Gordon. Things....may have been brought into perspective for him with the events of last weekend."
"I suppose anything is possible, but I'm not holding my breath."
"Hey just get through classes today and worry about that tonight."
We hit the showers and got changed. I headed downstairs and turned to the cafeteria. Gordon stopped cold in his tracks.
"I won't try and make you go in there Gordon, but I've got to have breakfast to get my day going."
"Thanks Den. We'll catch you later."
Gordon was out of the building with Aiden right on his tail. Karl was soon over to join me and we had our breakfast and then were out to our classes.
Classes today were more throughly populated and things seemed to be getting back on an even keel. Intro to business lead into Ethics.
Here I was faced with the whole tell or don't tell problem. There were implications no matter what I did. I couldn't very well ask Mrs Flarety about it. I had given myself until I saw how things were at the next practice and I was going to hold to that.
I got some lunch and then headed into the accounting class and finally got through that. Gordon seemed to be holding up fairly well today with only one class left for him and Aiden. I made my way back to the dorm and did some bookwork for a while.
Soon enough it got to be time to shower and change for supper. Just to give ourselves plenty of time we were ready to go at 5.
I stepped out of my room with a good pair of slacks, a button down shirt and a sports coat. Gordon came out of his room in much the same and Karl show up similarly attired.
We were just waiting on Aiden, who came down the hall in a good pair of jeans and a polo shirt.
He looked at us and then down at what he was wearing.
"It's the best I've got."
