I got out my phone and called Pete. There was no answer. I tried Aiden and then Gordon. No answer at either one of them.
"Shit! Shit! Shit! I'm not getting an answer from anybody!"
"Don't you remember Den? Anytime there's any kind of situation now they cut the cell service to the school so there's no outside communication just in case. They even cut the internet repeaters."
"Stupid policy. The shots have to be hitting the quad side of the dorm, right where my room is, and Gordons and Aidens as well."
"Just breath lover. The chances that they were hit inside of the building are fairly small I'd think, unless the shooter is targeting them specifically and if any of them were stupid enough to get in front of a window once things started."
"Shit you know that the first instinct is to look and see what the hell is going on, and that would have happened before the shooter alert was sounded."
"Just relax Den think good thoughts. They are all just fine. Pete was going out to meet Susan. Gordon and Aiden are likely in the cafeteria at this point. If the shooter is up high getting an angle into there will be difficult."
"I hope you are right Karl, you don't know how much I hope you are right."
"About as much as I do lover."
At that point all of the lights went out all over the campus. Muzzle flashes could be seen even this far away and the reports heard.
Then there was a single muzzle flash from a different spot and then silence.
10 minutes later the lights came back on, but we weren't allowed back onto campus just yet. I tried my phone again and Pete answered immediately.
"Are you ok? What about Aiden and Gordon?"
"I'm fine Susan and I were in the theatre. I don't know about Aiden and Gordon. listen I need to call mom."
"Ok I'll catch up with you once they allow us back on campus."
I disconnected and tried Gordons phone and it went straight to voice mail. I tried Aidens phone and he picked up.
"Are you guys ok?"
"Phyisically yeah, but Gordons a basket case."
"Call your mom if you haven't already and call Gordons if he can't. We'll be back when they let us in."
I hung up and turned to Karl who was on his phone. He soon enough hung up.
"I heard what you were telling Pete and the guys and just called home to let them know we're alright."
We waited to be let back onto campus. Several ambulances took off with lights and sirens going while we waited. Then a coroners van was seen going onto campus as well and not much later it headed back out. By this time the networks had shown up and they were interviewing those people still around the gate. One of them headed towards us and the look that I gave her was enough for her to seek someone else to speak to. Karl had noticed.
"You don't care for them do you love?"
"Does it show? No I don't. They use what they want to slant the story as they want it. Just my opinion of course. Damn it are they ever going to let us back on campus?"
Someone must have been listening.
"Please have your ID's ready to get back on campus. Those without ID's will not be allowed in, that includes press."
Once we were finally allowed back onto campus Karl and I made good time back to my dorm. The front of the building and a good half of the quad in front of it were cordoned off. A good many uniforms were seen combing the area. We were allowed back into the dorm by one of the side entrances and when we got back upstairs I was a bit surprised to see all of the rooms on the quad side of the building standing open. Then the logic of it hit me. They would have had to have checked all of the rooms along this side for wounded or dead.
I fairly ran down the corridor to Gordons room to find it empty. It was quickly down the hall to Aidens room which was also empty. I knew the guys were phyiscally ok but I needed to see them to satisfy myself. I got the phone back out and called Aiden again.
"Where the hell are you guys?"
"We're still down in the cafeteria. I can't get Gordon to even stand up."
"Shit. We'll be right down, if they're letting people in and out of there."
"They are as far as I can see. Have you heard what the hell this was all about?"
"Not a word yet, but I haven't seen a tv or gotten online or anything. Hell we might not know anything for days."
I hurried on down to the cafeteria with Karl right behind me. We found Aiden holding Gordon close against an inside wall. Gordon sat there with his knees to his chest just rocking back and forth even as Aiden tried to hold him.
I got down to Gordons level.
"Gordon?"
His eyes flickered to my face and then away again.
"I think it's going to be a very long night Karl. Your choice to stay or try and get some sleep."
"Are you serious? Nobody is getting any sleep tonight I'm betting. I'm staying."
I sat down on the other side of Gordon and put an arm around him and he pulled away from me.
"Ok. Just know that I'm here if you need me."
Karl sat down on the other side of me and put his arms around me.
My phone rang several times and I had to assure everybody that I was just fine, and the night wore on.
Before I knew it the sun was peeking through the windows. Word filtered through to us that classes for the day had been cancelled.
"Maybe we should try and get ourselves up to our rooms?"
"We may damn well have to carry Gordon Den."
"Then we carry Gordon and hope to hell they get some counselors in here. I don't have the foggiest on how to help him. What did he see that has him so out of it?"
"He was standing right next to somebody who got hit. I grabbed him and hauled him over to this side of building. He hasn't said a word since."
"That would do it. Gordon I don't know if you can hear me or not but we will get you through this."
He must have heard me as his eye flickered in my direction once again.
We finally made our way upstairs and got Gordon into his room. Aiden stayed right with him. There were still a few police officers working the floor, digging slugs out of walls and floors.
We went into my room and found Pete already there with several holes through the window and holes in the floor.
"Damn good thing we were out I guess."
"Ya think Den? At least our room has been processed. The guys further down the hall are still waiting. The police said we can put some cardboard over the holes in the glass until the school can get somebody up here to replace it. Looks like ours was one of the hardest hit rooms, but as far as anybody knows,or is saying, just because we are center of the building. The whole damn side took damage from what I was told."
"I'm betting they want to talk to us just the same after all of the shit that happened over the fall."
Just at that point there would be a knock at our door. I opened it to find a man there in a sport coat and tie. A gold shield hung from his breast pocket.
"Detective come on in."
"Thank you Mr....Sawyer?"
"Correct."
"Any reason to think that this attack might have been aimed at you?"
"As far as I know sir all threats to me have been taken care of. Larry Brown as I'm sure you know is dead. His father and brother were taken into custody several days ago. Beyond that I can't say other than on his death bed Mr Brown did say he wasn't done with me yet."
"You think he might have some co conspirators left about?"
"The only person who has said anything that might be construed as a threat was a Mr Scott Clay back home. I can't however see him getting into something like this."
"None the less we'll check him out. We may have more questions for you once we've identified the shooter."
"I'd appreciate being kept informed Detective.......?
"Martin, Clayton Martin."
"Well Dectective Martin, if it will help you out any when you get in touch with my local police you should probably talk to Officer Dana Pembrose. He is the one that is probably most familiar with all of the facts at that end."
"Thank you sir, that should make things a little easier. You guys going to be alright?"
"Yeah I think so. Can't say as much for my friend next door at this point."
"Taking it hard is he?"
"Somebody next to him got hit. I'm sure he is fairly well traumatized. I hope to hell they get some professionals in here PDQ."
"I can tell you that the call went out very early this morning. I suspect they will have someone making the rounds by noon. You try and relax. Right now the current thinking is your room took so many hits just becaue it was the center of the building. I'll let you know if anything different turns up. Try and have a better day."
With that the Detective left and Karl and I went next door to Gordons again. He and Aiden were still huddled on his bed. I looked around and found that his room had taken a couple of hits as well. By this time Gordons roomie Dave was back as well.
I tried talking to Gordon again but he was still unresponsive.
"Why don't you try and get some rest love. I'm going to sit here for a while, if you don't mind Dave?"
"Not a problem Dennis, not if you can help Gordy."
"Think about the only help I can give right now is moral support."
There was now a man at the open door.
"Sorry didn't mean to eavesdrop, but moral support may just be about the best thing that you can do for your friend. I'm Doctor Garner, I'm a phsycologist. Seems your friend could use my help,if he'll let me?"
Gordons eyes just flickered to Doctor Garner and he then took a death grip on Aidens arm.
"Take it easy young man. He can stay, but I'd like you other three to give us the room for a while, unless you need some help as well?"
"I've been through enough shit lately that I think I can handle this. Please do what you can for him. I'm Dennis and I'll be right next door if you need me."
"Yeah and I'm Dave. How long you going to need the room?"
"No way of telling at the moment. I'll leave the door open when I leave."
Karl and I went back to my room and Dave took off to somewhere. Pete had left our room at some point.
"I hope to hell that guy can help Gordon, otherwise it's going to be a really lousy second half of the year."
"Lousy ain't the word for it lover. It will be pure hell I'm sure."
My phone rang at that point and the caller ID said it was the law firm.
"Hello Mr Jacobs. What's going on?"
"Just thought you should know that Mr Brown and Joey were released on bail this morning. Restraining orders are in place."
"Thanks for the heads up. I realize it's only been a couple of days, but anything on that other matter?"
"Not as yet, but it is being worked on. These things take time I'm afraid. Serching records from almost 20 years ago before things were so heavily computerized takes a great deal of time."
"I understand Mr Jacobs. Please keep me informed."
"Will do. Things starting to get back to normal up there?"
"I think we are a far cry from normal and will be for some time."
"I can certainly appreciate that. Try and have a good day."
"You too sir. Good bye."
I hung up the phone.
"Well looks like life is going to continue to be complicated. Larrys dad and brother got released on bail."
"Shit. As if things around here weren't already screwed up enough. Well at least his job should keep him at home."
"And the conditions of his bail I'm guessing as well."
We just tried to relax for a while until there was a knock on the door.
I opened the door to find Doctor Garner there.
"How's he doing Doc?"
"He is at least calm enough now that he is taking a nap. Gordon is going to need a lot of support from you guys. Do you have any type of routine other than classes?"
"The four of us go jogging every morning."
"That's good. See if you can get him back into that as soon as possible. Anything else that you normally do as a group should help as well."
"Large groups?"
"What do you mean?"
"I'm on the gymnastics squad. The guys usually go to the meets even if I'm not on the "A" team."
"That may or may not be such a good thing at first. He was in a large group down in the cafeteria."
"Then we won't force him to go, but hope for the best."
"Ok then. Sounds like you two are going to be handleing this just fine, and I've got an appointment with Gordon for tomorrow. Here's my card just in case. I need to keep moving."
Doctor Garner went on down to the next room.
"Ok lover, why don't you head over to your room. I need to try and catch a nap. I'll call you later."
"You sure Den?"
"Yeah I don't think Pete would take kindly to a heart on the door that lasted several hours, not after last night. I expect he'll be back needing a nap as well."
"You're probably right and truth to tell I could sure as hell use one too. I'll catch you for supper lover."
"Sounds like a plan."
I gave Karl a kiss and closed my door and went and pulled the drape to try and darken the room a little. I laid down and soon enough was asleep.
It was a sleep troubled by dreams of cars twisted around trees, bullets tearing up the ground by me feet, gun muzzles pointed out of car windows and muzzle flashes in the distance.
I woke up no more rested than when I had gone to sleep. What if this lastest incident was tied to me? Did I have any right to be putting everybody on campus in danger?
