We eventually had dinner and got ready to head out for the evening, still with no set destination in mind. We drove around for a bit and finally ended up at Mannys.
The place was pretty crowded on a Saturday night, especially with all of the folks home from college. Friends dropped by to say hello and we generally just kicked back for a few hours. It really didn't help my mood much.
I kept my eyes open all the way home, but didn't see anything suspicious. Karl and I made our way into my house and I made sure everything was locked up. Karl was waiting for me in bed by the time I was finsihed.
"Come and try to get some sleep lover."
I stripped down and crawled in with Karl. He wrapped his arms around me and turned out the lights.
"Deep breaths lover and try and relax. Nothing's going to happen to us tonight."
"I hope to hell not."
Eventually I fell asleep only to have the alarm go off far to early this morning. Regardless we got up and got some jogging clothes on and headed out to meet Roland and Aaron. Again my head was on a swivel as we headed down to the track. Our laps finished we headed back to our houses. Karl and I quickly showered and went over to his house for breakfast with his family.
"Well boys, what's on yur agenda for today?"
"No idea what we're up to today dad."
"Why don't you boys take a hike, the three of you."
It was Stans way of reminding us that we hadn't spent a whole lot of time with Bobby this trip.
"What do you say Bobby? We haven't walked the hills in a long time."
Bobbys face lit up like the Christmas tree that was still in the den.
"Yeah sure! Let me get my things!"
Bobby was up from the table and out of the room like a shot. When he returned it was with hiking boots and a small backpack. Karl went to is room and got his own hiking boots. The three of us trundled over to my house and I got a few things together along with my own hiking boots and we headed out and got in the BMW and headed out. We did stop and get ourselves a bit of a picnic lunch and then headed out to the state park once again.
The trailhead was in a different part of the park from the riding stables and we had no problem getting a place to park. The three of us started up the trail and into the hills. They weren't all that steep but there was enough elevation when we reached the top to give us a fair look around.
The whole trail was about 5 miles from end to end. Once we were at the top of the hill we took time to have our lunch.
We were heading back towards the parking lot when I noticed that the trail had collapsed a little and there was loose dirt at the edge of it. I was about to bring it to Karl and Bobbys attention when there was a shout from behind us.
"Hey Bobby!"
Naturally Bobby turned to look and as luck would have it he had just stepped into the loose dirt. It gave away under him and Bobby went tumbling down the hill off of the trail.
Karl and I were both after him without even thinking about it. When we finally caught up to him, Bobby was pretty well scratched up.
"Easy Bobby don't try to move anything yet!"
Karl and I both started to check him over and everything seemed fine until we got to his right ankle. Karl tested that to see if there were any broken bones and Bobby screamed.
By this time the kid who had yelled at him and apparently the kids father were there with us.
"Jeez Bobby I'm sorry I didn't mean to make you fall."
"You didn't make me fall Eddie. I'm a klutz and we all know it."
"Nobodies fault. Shit happens. That ankle isn't going to support any weight so we need to carry you back to the car Bobby. As undignified as it is I think we're going to have to piggyback you."
"I'm to old for then Den."
"Maybe Bobby but we don't have any other way to get you down. For right now you get between us and let's get back on the trail and then piggyback from there."
We eventually got ourselves back to the car. Karl called his father and told him what had happened and that we would meet them at the hospital.
Stan, Gert, and Connie were there when we arrived. Booby was scooted off to xray and they found that the ankle was only sprained. They wrapped the ankle and gave Bobby a pair of crutches and told him to keep off the ankle as much as possible for the next week.
We all finally got back to the houses and Bobby surprisingly didn't try to milk his ankle for symapthy. If he wanted something he damn happy well got up and got it for himself, much as Gert tried to keep him down.
The rest of Sunday passed uneventfully and well before 11 even Karl and I were sacked out.
Monday morning and I was full paranoid as we met Roland and Aaron to go do our jogging. If this guy held true to form, something, was going to happen today. I wasn't the only one this morning. Even Roland and Aaron had their heads on swivels as we made our way around the track. We got back to the house none the worse and Karl and I went to the shower and were shortly dressed. We didn't wait for Mrs Ohanlon to get us breakfast as I wanted to be out the door and to the office early. I knew Mr Bellows got to the office an hour earlier than everyone else. I wanted to get into my fathers office without being seen so that I could come back in the summer with none the wiser about who I was.
"Dennis what the blazes are you doing here at this hour of the morning?"
"Mr Bellows, I need to know if dad left you anything for me that you haven't turned over."
"There's nothing that I can think of. Why what's going on?"
"I found a safe in my parents bedroom and I have no idea what the combination is. I was hoping he left something with you, or in his office. I didn't want to be seen going into the office so that I could come back again in the summer."
"Well I can certainly let you into the office and when you are done you can exit through mine. We do have that connecting corridor."
"I appreciate that Mr Bellows. If this turns up nothing, I'm going to have to call the safe company and have them come open it."
"Well I can certainly give you access to your dads office, though I have no idea what you might find in there."
"Mr Bellows if he expected me to come in and take over at some point, I'm hoping he might have left some kind of clue or the combination to the safe or something that will help here for me. I've searched the house and the lawyers are pretty sure they've turned over everything, the bank would have said if he left a safe deposit box there I'm pretty sure. That just leaves the office as far as I can determine."
"Sounds like you've covered the bases to me Dennis. Well here you go. Try not to make too big of a mess please."
"We'll leave it in good shape Mr Bellows. I'd hate to come into a mess when I do come and lay claim."
Karl and I stepped into the office and it was just as I remembered it. I started with the file cabinet to see if there was a file with my name on it. Karl started going through the books to see if anything turned up there. Nothing turned up in either place.
I went to the desk and started going through the drawers. All of the time I was doing that there was something at the back of my head trying to make itself known. I checked each and every drawer and even the bottom of the drawers in case something was taped there. I even checked for false bottoms. Still something kept tickling the back of my mind and it was most aggravating.
I pushed back from the desk and just sat there stareing at it for several seconds. It took a few minutes but I noticed that the drawers were not the same on both sides of the desk. They didn't seem to go all the way down on one side.
Not a false bottom, but a false drawer! Now all I had to do was find the release mechanisim. I started running my fingers over the desk and Karl looked at me like I was nuts.
"There's a hidden drawer here Karl. I just need to find the release."
I finally found it in the crennelation on the corner of the desk and the hidden drawer popped open. Sitting there was a small lock box. I pulled it out and tried to open it. Obviously it was locked. I don't know what had possessed me to do it, but I had grabbed my fathers keyring before I had left the house. I proceeded to try each key that even had a possibility of fitting the lock. None of them worked.
"Why the hell did dad make this so frigging difficult?"
"He must of had a reason lover."
I put everything back to rights and headed for the connecting corridor to Mr Bellows office. I did have the presence of mind to knock on the connecting door just in case he had someone in the office as it was well within business hours by now.
"Come on in Dennis."
Karl and I entered the office and held up the small box for Stan to see.
"First time I've seen that. I take it you don't have the key to open it?"
"Not on dads keyring and I don't know of any others."
"Well that should be a damn sight easier to get into that a safe."
"I would certainly think so, but I don't want to force it unless I have to. Might be something fragile in there."
"Whatever is in there I just hope it gets you where you need to be Dennis. So still plan to come back in the summer?"
"Yeah that is still my intent, so mums still the word."
"Of course. Well good luck with the rest of your year at school."
"Thank you Mr Bellows."
We stepped out of Mr Bellows office and there was a woman sitting at the desk there, she looked up.
"Oh my stars Dennis... I mean Mr Sawyer!"
I knew her instantly
"Mrs Hines! I didn't know you were still here!"
"Oh but it is so good to see you. I knew you were out of the hospital and wondered why you hadn't been by. Then again I didn't see much for the time I was in the secratary pool."
"Must be why I never ran into you when I was working here last summer."
Stan was again with us by this point.
"There was no need to keep Mrs Hines at her desk next door once your father passed. I brought here back here after that incident with Janice."
Mrs Hines had seen what I had in my hands.
"Oh I haven't seen that box in years! Well then I guess it's about time I gave this up then."
She reached behind her neck and undid a chain. When she pulled it out there was a key attached to it.
"Your father, god rest his soul, told me not to give you this key until I saw you holding that box."
