Home Is In Your Arms
Chapter 16
Elena sat finishing her coffee, and enjoying the quiet of the house that Monday morning. It was Milen's first day of school for the new school year, and he left about 10 minutes before, and their parents had already left a couple of hours before to go in to work for the day.
As she sat there, she finished the last of her coffee, then as she rinsed out her cup, her phone rang. She looked at the display, and frowned. It was the number to the hospital in which her doctor worked, and she hoped that the results from the physical she had done a few days before came back with no troubling findings, but it still worried her all the same. She answered the phone as she tried to prepare herself for what news Dr. Jones might have for her.
"Elena," she began. "I'm glad I was able to get ahold of you personally."
"It's good to hear from you," Elena said. "What's going on? Why did you need to get ahold of me?"
"I wanted to ask what you have going on this morning," Dr. Jones asked.
Elena felt a lightning bolt of fear rush through her. She wondered why Dr. Jones was wondering what she had going on. If everything came back clean, then why did she need to know this?
"I don't have anything going on this morning," Elena said trying to keep from trembling.
"Would you be available to come in at around 10:30 A.M. this morning?" Dr. Jones asked. "I got back your test results."
"You can't tell me what was found in the blood work?" Elena asked.
"This isn't strictly about the blood work," Dr. Jones answered. "This is concerning the abdominal scans we ran last week. I read over them last Wednesday when we took the scans, then I had a colleague with whom I work review them. She looked at them Thursday, then we checked them again on Friday just to be sure."
"Just to be sure of what?" Elena asked, and now she was afraid.
She wished her parents were there at that moment, and she was starting to think that she knew what Dr. Jones was going to tell her.
"I really do need you to come in to the office Elena," Dr. Jones said. "I'm sure you'd like to know what's going on right now, but I'd rather tell you in person. Do you have anyone who can come with you, or are you coming alone?"
"I'll drive myself," Elena said, then they ended the call.
Once in her car, Elena sat there before starting it, and it all was coming back to her.

When she was 20, she had been casually dating a guy named Marc, and they went on about a month's worth of dates before he asked if she'd go all the way with him. She knew from other people around high school, and them talking like that just exactly what "Going All the Way" meant, and she didn't want to do it at that moment. Elena knew from a young age that she wanted to wait for a long while before having sex, and she knew that she wanted it to be special, as well as the fact that she wanted kids someday, but with the right guy. Given Marc's attitude of liking jokes that almost always were at the expense of others, she didn't think he'd be life partner material, and she told him after that month of dating that she thought that they should see other people.
He cussed her out calling her a Slut, a Whore and a tramp who was just being a tease all along. They were in the driveway of her house by this time, and she got out of the car, but not before telling him that she didn't want to have any further contact with him if he wasn't going to stop calling her names.
"Suit yourself Bitch!" he yelled out the window after her, then he squealed out of the driveway and down the road.
"Bastard!" she thought as she went inside and locked the door after making sure that it was latched completely.
A week later when she was walking home from the store after buying a couple of last minute items for dinner, she got a text from Marc, and he said that he wanted to apologize for how he had behaved. He asked where she was, and not suspecting what might happen, she told him where she was.
Once he met her, they went to his car, and they drove a little ways away from the store, and to where the park was, and after a couple of minutes of him apologizing, he tried to kiss her. She pushed him away, and he grabbed her, and let her know that a spiteful little Bitch like her wasn't going to reject him.
After making several threats, he made her do what he wanted, then he drove back to where the store was, and called her a Whore, and told her to get the fuck out of his car.
As she exited his car, she thought that she had never felt so humiliated in her life! She went in to the restroom in back of the store, and she was glad that it wasn't within the store. She checked herself carefully, and cleaned up some of the blood that she found, then just sat there for a few minutes. Nothing felt real, and as she felt a slight pain down there when she stood up, her mind began drifting away. Things didn't seem real; this wasn't Elena, this was a character on a movie or a TV show, the Son of a Bitch who had just raped her wasn't an entitled scumbag, but only an actor in the same show, and the pain wasn't actual pain, but just acting for the benefit of the audience. She wanted to believe that, and now her mind was splitting as if down the middle with one side keeping the denial, and the other side trying to tell her, more like screaming at her the reality of what had happened. She didn't know how she would get through that night, but somehow she did.
Things went on normally around the house, but her parents as well as Milen noticed that she was more quiet than usual, and she had been staying in her room more and more as the days went by, and then about three weeks later she began throwing up in the morning. On that third week she went to her doctor certain that she knew what it might be.
As she drove up to the front of the hospital, she remembered when it had happened.
"That Mother Fucker didn't use protection when he did it!" she thought.
All for those last few weeks she hadn't gotten any testing done for STDs or any follow-up care. She was trying to deny what had happened, and she couldn't go through what other girls in society had gone through after being raped, and she told herself that she wasn't going to be a victim!
What she suspected was true, she was pregnant, and after Dr. Jones did an STD Panel which came back negative, she asked Elena who the father was.
"Just some guy," Elena answered, and Dr. Jones who had been treating her for the last year knew she was lying.
"Elena if you're feeling embarrassed about anything, I want you to know that there's nothing to be ashamed about," Dr. Jones said. "If you believe you rushed in to sex with someone you thought was the wrong guy, you're not a bad person. I won't judge you for who you were with, but it would be helpful if I knew a little more about who the father might be. It could be helpful in the event that there might be any genetic issues on the father's side of the family that we might have to worry about. I'm not saying that there are, but I want to just be sure."
Elena sat there, then she remembered the horrible things that Marc had said to her before, during and after he did what he did, and she began crying. Dr. Jones put an arm around her, then after the worst of her crying was done, Jones sat beside her on the exam table.
"Elena if you don't want me to ask anything I won't, but I'm starting to get the feeling that there's more to all of this, and if this guy is doing anything to make you feel afraid, then I can help you deal with him," Dr. Jones said. "Does your family know about anything that's going on?"
"No, I haven't told them anything," she said. "Also, if you really can do something, then I'll tell you."
Elena told her everything, and Dr. Jones had to work to not lose her temper.
"I think the first place to start is to look at your options medically speaking," Dr. Jones said. "I know that you've talked about being pro-choice in the past, but obviously it might be different now given the situation, but I think the first thing to get figured out is to ask if you actually want to carry this pregnancy to term. I'll respect which ever choice you make, and I'll give you however much time you need to take to try to figure it out."
"It is rather different now, but I'm not keeping the option off the table to terminate my pregnancy," Elena said. "This isn't how I ever wanted to fucking bring a child in to the world!"
"No woman should have to have children in this way, and again I'll support which ever choice you make."
"Thank you Dr. Jones," Elena said.
Once back home, she sat down with her and Milen's parents, and after telling them everything, they held her, and when Milen got home they explained the situation to him as best as they could, and he too hugged his sister for a long time.
Elena's procedure was scheduled for two weeks later, and after it was over and the anesthesia was out of her system enough for her to stand and to walk, she rode back home with her family, and she tried to sleep on the way home, but she could only think that nothing was supposed to turn out this way. Who would want her now? What man would ever want to be with her, but also what kind of guy would ever want to have kids with a woman who killed her first ever unborn child?
All of this ran through her mind as they drove home, and over the next few days she talked with her and Milen's parents about everything she was thinking, and they got her to a counselor that was good with helping with these sorts of issues as well as with dealing with psychological trauma from rape. She worked with Elena in the coming weeks, and it was a good thing too, because not only did she have many flashbacks about the rape, but she also had horrible nightmares about her unborn baby.
In one nightmare she dreamed that she was standing before a crowd on a hot sunny day. They all had huge rocks they were holding in their hands. Their arms were positioned as if ready to throw them at her, and one man who was obviously the leader stepped forward.
"Alright Bitch, you killed your child who was a gift from God, now it's time for you to die!" he yelled at the top of his lungs!
The first stone came towards her in slow-motion, and she sat up in bed still hearing the roar of the crowd in her head! She had no idea how she'd get through the rest of the work she had to do to try and rebuild her life; somehow she would find a way.
Over time Elena came to recognize what Marc did to her as the crime that it was, and she came to understand that she had the right to make the decision about her pregnancy that she had made. She didn't choose for that Bastard to rape her! She didn't choose to bring a child in to the world because some entitled asshole believed that he and he alone had the right to make her his possession in the worst kind of way! As far as she was concerned, Marc could burn in hell for all she cared, and once he was arrested a couple of months later after most of Elena's therapy was underway, he was sent to prison for at least the next two decades, and she hoped that his life was a true living hell while he was in there!

As Elena came back to her surroundings, she looked at the clock on her phone and saw that it was 10:15 A.M., and she knew that she would be a couple minutes late. She called Dr. Jones and let the receptionist know that she was running a little late. Fortunately the woman at the other end of the phone understood, and told her that they'd see her when she got there.
Once at the hospital, and after the nurse checked Elena's vitals, Dr. Jones came in, but she wasn't alone. With her was another female doctor. The guest introduced herself as Dr. Anderson, and she was an abdominal surgeon. As they sat down, Dr. Jones explained everything.
The upshot was this; Elena's scans showed that her ovaries had become damaged, and they went on to explain that there was scar tissue that had built up from an infection that was just now starting to show up.
"Have you been feeling alright lately?" Dr. Anderson asked. "I see in one of the entries in your chart that you did have an abortion back about two years ago, but I don't think that that's what's causing what we're seeing. I also see that you went for medical care several weeks after what had happened."
She added that last part and was trying to keep her face blank of any emotion.
"You mean around the time that I was raped?" Elena said with some anger in her voice. "You can call it what it is, and I'm not angry at you. A part of me is still angry that I've even had to go through any of this at all! I've felt a little nausea, and a little more tired than usual over the past week or so. I didn't think anything of it though."
"That must be really hard," Dr. Anderson said. "I want you to know that I don't blame you for what happened at all, but I do need to tell you what I believe is going on, and I don't want you to think I'm saying anything that sounds like victim-blame."
"I just need to know what's going on," Elena said getting more worried now.
"Because you hadn't been to see your doctor shortly after the rape, and because of some of the small tears that were caused, it appears that bacteria got in to the areas around your reproductive organs, and over-time they began growing, but not enough so that they were noticed," Dr. Anderson went on. "Had they been noticed by Dr. Smith, the doctor who performed the abortion, then obviously she wouldn't have went ahead with the surgery at that time. Also, I don't mean to imply that the abortion caused this, and as far as I'm concerned it didn't, so we can take that off the list of possible causes. I'm quite certain that what we're seeing is as a direct result of the bacteria that got in when you were attacked, and they've had time to do damage to your reproductive organs as I mentioned."
"How serious is this!" Elena asked feeling like the floor was dropping out from under where she was sitting.
"The biggest thing we have to worry about in the immediate future is your possibly having kids," Dr. Jones said.
"What have your thoughts been on that over the last couple of years?" Dr. Anderson asked.
"I've not thought about it much, but I was hoping to still have children someday," Elena answered.
"You should still be able to," Dr. Anderson responded. "That being said though, given the damage that we're seeing on these scans, I'm not optimistic that you'll be able to conceive the natural way. If that's the case, then you and any partner with whom you decide to share your life will have to start making some decisions about possible options concerning adoption."
"You said the biggest thing right now to worry about," Elena began. "What else is going to possibly happen?"
"I'll want to keep tracking your reproductive system," Dr. Anderson answered. "Given the changes occurring, there could be damage down the road that could cause mutations that could eventually lead to either Ovarian Cancer, Uterine Cancer or both. We're not there yet by any means, but I can't end our meeting today and not tell you that. I can only imagine how scary all of this might seem right now, and I as well as Dr. Jones will be here for you through all of this."
"We absolutely will be," Dr. Jones added. "If you need a couple of days to think about what we said, I'll understand. That being said, we'll want to continue monitoring your reproductive organs for the immediate future, so any future appointments you have will be to do that so we can track what all is going on. I don't want to wait and find out on a routine physical months or years down the road that you have cancer in any of the organs in question, and worse that it might be out of control enough so that nothing can be done.
"I understand," Elena said as she tried to focus on what was being said.
"How soon before you go back to college?" Dr. Jones asked.
"That's about a week away," Elena said as if just realizing that suddenly at that moment.
"I could refer your case to a couple of colleagues near the college, as it's about three hours from here, and you will be needing to have these appointments possibly every two months if not sooner depending on what may or may not be found," Dr. Jones said.
Elena considered what Jones had said, and she made her decision.
"I won't be returning to school," she said. "I need to stay here so we can deal with this, and I don't want to see new doctors who may or may not have read through each and every note in my chart. I don't want to have to start over with a new team of doctors having to get to know my case, and I'm just barely able to cope with what I've found out right now, and it would be harder having to go through retelling my story to new doctors some of whom might have attitudes that might cloud their judgment given the situation that caused all of this in the first place."
Jones and Anderson nodded. They understood what she was implying.
"Okay," Dr. Jones said as they all stood. "So we're all in agreement that you'll be seeing me for the foreseeable future, and so I want to ask if you have a place to stay, or are you still living with your parents?"
"I'll most likely be staying with my parents and brother," she said. "I'll need to talk to them about what we discussed today, and I'll let you know how that goes."
"I'd really appreciate that," Dr. Jones said.
"I would as well," Dr. Anderson added.
Once Elena got Dr. Anderson's contact information and put it in her phone's contact app, she scheduled the next appointment, then she returned home trying to process everything that they had talked about during that appointment. It was a struggle to slow down her mind to think about all that was said; she felt like her mind was going a million miles an hour.

Milen
I walked through the door of the house, and sat my bag down on the kitchen table. I looked and saw that my parents and Elena were in the living room, and I knew that something had happened. I went to them, and Elena was wiping her eyes, and now I was really worried!
"What's going on?" I asked.
They started by telling me that Elena had called them once she had gotten home, and she asked them to come home. She told them that she needed to talk to them, and once home she told them everything that they were all three telling me now.
I felt really sad for her, and I went to her holding her for a long time. She wasn't crying, but I was close to it! Elena didn't deserve any of what had happened, nor did she deserve what she was going through currently either! I was just glad that the Bastard who did that to her was in prison, and I was thinking as I held her that I didn't know what I would do if he was still walking around free.
After we separated, I sat there watching her.
"I'll be alright Milen," she said coming over and hugging me. "I'll do what I can to get through this. I know I have your support, as well as Mom and Dad's support. That truly helps."
"I'm glad to hear you say that," I answered. "I love you, and I want you to be alright."
"I love you too Milen," she replied. "And I will be. Whatever happens, I know that with all of you by my side, it'll all be alright."
Once in my room, I called Kyley. Elena said that it would be fine if I told him, as she knew that he wouldn't spread it around. Once he was on the screen, we asked about one another's days, then I told him what had happened.
"I'm really sorry to hear that," he said looking sad. "I had wondered if she had gone through what I had, but wasn't sure. I didn't want to ask, and make things hard for her."
"I know," I said. "I know how much you care for her, as well as for my parents and I. I love you for that as well as for all of the other reasons."
"I love you too Milen," he answered.
"I'm glad I have you to talk to about that," I went on. "It was hard seeing her like that when I got home a little while ago."
"I can imagine it was," he responded. "Will you be on later, I hear Michael calling me. I have to finish up the last of my homework. I'll call you after I finish it."
"I'd really love that," I said.
"Me too," he answered. "I love you, and I'll talk to you here soon."
"I love you too, and I'll talk to you when you call back," I said.
"That sounds good," he answered.
"Cool," I responded. "Oh and Kyley?"
"Yeah?" he said.
"About what you said about not wanting to make things hard for my sister," I began. "You always make things really special and good for her, and for all of us as well."
"Thank you Milen," he said with pure joy on his face.
"You're welcome," I answered.
We said we loved each other again, then signed off for the moment. I was glad that we had that moment together, and seeing his face really made my day as it always does!
Author's Notes
I hope everyone enjoys this chapter. I realize that what happened to Elena will be difficult for people to read, and I thought a lot about how I wanted to deal with that part of the story. I never had really written anything much about abortion in any of my previous stories, and I wanted to include a part of the story that has to do with that, mostly because of how I'm getting more of an understanding of a lot of these sorts of feminist issues as I've paid more attention to them over the last few years. I hope what I wrote above though does help people to come to see these issues past all of the pro-choice talking points, and really helps people to see the women behind what is being talked about when it comes to these subjects.
That being said, I hope everyone has had a nice Christmas even with things being as they are currently. I had a good Christmas, and just kept things low-key for this year.
I'll be sending out this chapter now, and I hope everyone has a good evening. I'll see everyone in Chapter 17.
