From Chapter 2

Tom texted me on Saturday.

"I know you've got your first baseball practice Monday, but how about after practice you come over and we can have that meeting we talked about yesterday?"

"Yeah. That works."

It's funny. Tom can hop a ride 10 times to Cupid's but he's afraid to leave too detailed a message on his phone. As far as I know, his parents have never checked his messages. But then, I guess the topic is a little more sensitive than 'I'm going out to xyz' said directly to one or both of them.

Monday

I'm so excited today. And not just because I'll be meeting a few other gay boys from town after practice, but I got an A+ on a piece of short fiction I had to write for as assignment in English last week. Mr. Bernard thinks it may be good enough to submit to a high school writing contest he knows about. The assignment was to write a short piece, about a thousand words, but no more than 1200, describing a potential moment in your future, attainable or not. It's complete fantasy, but I pitch for the school baseball team. I'm nowhere near as good as the character in my 'story.'

CHAPTER 9 - The Meeting

School dragged all day. I questioned myself about everyone I looked at in the halls or classrooms, 'are they one of the three?' I'm so distracted I hope I don't fuck up in practice. Although with the team having barely enough pitching, I'd need to fuck up badly AND have a freshman or two decide to try out as pitchers. While there were a couple new pitching prospects, even distracted I think I was still better than they were. Even if I wasn't, having one or two more pitchers wouldn't be a bad thing. We had 5 total last season, all of us also playing other positions on some of our non-starting days. Having only 5 extra players in the first place didn't really leave any room for cutting players. Having Connor makes us a barely competitive team, but we still lose more than we win. There's also an incoming transfer student, junior Ken Smithson, who looks like a pretty good player. I have to ask though. Why the fuck would anyone move INTO this god forsaken town? Anyway, practice/tryouts are over. It looks like we may be able to not only replace last year's 3 graduating seniors, but actually grow by 2 or maybe three players. Maybe we'll break .500 this season. Anyway, off to Tom's house. He lives close to the school, most of us do, maybe 10-15% of the students live a little outside town and get bussed. Never needed to myself, so I'm just guessing.

I get to Tom's house and hesitate before ringing the bell. I'm nervous, mostly about three more people finding out I'm gay. Yeah, they are too and would have nothing to gain by outing any of us, but that doesn't alleviate my worries. Suck it up Avery and push the bell.

Dum dum dum DUMMMMM.

Oh great, a fancy Beethoven's 5th doorbell. I never noticed it before. Probably because every time I've been here I/we came along with Tom and had no reason to use the doorbell. Or would it be a doorsong? Doorsymphony? Anyway, Tom opens the door.

"Hi Avery. Glad you could make it. Come on in... How was practice?"

"Practice was pretty good. I didn't fuck up too badly, so I'll keep my spot on the team and there's a new kid that looks like a pretty good player."

"Cool. Well, come on down to the family room, the others are already here. I didn't tell them your name ahead of time. Loose lips sink ships and none of us wants to be torpedoed. Although going down like a submarine is always fun. Ha ha."

Tom's parents both work and he only has older siblings that are away at college, so it's just the 5 of us. I kind of do a double-take because one of them is Andre's best friend Carl Tipton. He's the competitive Tom mentioned. I don't recognize the junior, seen him in the school but don't know him. And the final one pretty much takes my breath away. The hottest guy in the school, always has girls hanging around him. Even the straight guys think he's gorgeous. Senior Patrick Marks. Carl and I have almost the same reaction.

"Oh shit." "Holy fuck."

"I see you two know each other. Pull your tongue in and close the jaw before you drool all over my parent's carpet Avery. I'm guessing you don't know David Anderson, based on the lack of recognition that crossed both your faces."

It takes me yet another moment to recover from the shock of seeing Patrick here.

"Um, yeah. Nice to meet you David. I guess you prefer David since Tom didn't call you Dave."

"Very astute. Nice meeting you too..."

"Oh, yeah. Duh. David, this is Avery Kensington."

"Wait... Carl isn't your... friend's surname Kensington too?"

"Yeah, they're brothers. This makes me extremely uncomfortable."

The room is quiet for a few moments, nobody knowing what to say. Finally Patrick tries to settle our nerves.

"Looks at it this way Carl. Avery has nothing to gain by outing any of us. The first question he'll get is 'how do you know' and I can see that as being an even more uncomfortable situation for him than this is for you."

"I guess. But a lot of the discomfort is due to the thought of doing anything, um sexual, with him. Aside from being a little bigger, he looks just like his brother."

"Shit. I should have recognized that. I'm sure you mentioned Andre a couple times Carl, but I didn't make the association when I discovered Avery's preference. I don't think we can do much about the discomfort, aside from saying, you know we don't do something if the other person says no. This would be a special case there. And nothing we say or do in our little group ever 'leaves the room' so to speak."

"Well, it's too late to change history now. If that was possible Chester Bennington would never have died."

"And many others. Linkin Park fan Carl?"

"Very much Avery."

"Cool. I like them too."

So, we continued getting acquainted or more acquainted as the case may be before the discussion turned to sex. Since we're at Tom's house, he acted as quasi-moderator at this point.

"OK, now that we all know each other a little better, does anybody feel any additional discomfort about talking sex? Like who likes or dislikes what, who has done what or not?"

We all agree that it's a bearable topic at this point.

"OK then, I'll start, it'll be short. If two guys can do it, and involves hands, dicks, mouths, and asses, I've done it."

"Gee Tom. Never had anyone cum in your ear?"

"Don't tell me you have Pat."

"Ewwww. No, just trying to be funny. Score minus one for me."

"OK, since you haven't had anybody cum in your e... Wait. Have you cum in someone else's ear?"

"Guilty as charged Tom."

"Oh, we need to hear this story at some point."

"True that David."

The rest of us agree with David and Carl.

"OK, who's next. I think I see your hand up Avery."

"Huh? Was I stretching or something?"

"He's kidding dumbass."

"Oh, thanks Pat. Um, I'm quite a ways behind Tom. Probably all of you depending on how long this little 'club' has been together. Aside from things one can do alone, I've only participated in a couple handjobs, been blown twice and sucked three different dicks."

"OK, thanks for being honest Avery. It could get tricky if one of us tries something you said you did, but didn't do, with you. Pat? You can leave out the ear for the moment. That needs to stand alone."

"Well, I guess for Avery's benefit because anything I've done has been with one of you. Almost the same as Avery, except I also have both topped and bottomed, um, guess I shouldn't have include 'been with one of you,' three times."

"We'll continue downward in grade order. David?"

"Same as Pat, but have only topped with two people."

"And Carl?"

"Um. OK, this has to be just between us. I've bottomed for two and topped 4."

I'm wondering if his hesitation means one of those tops and bottoms was my brother.

"Good. Time for a break. Let's go into the kitchen and grab a pop. There's chips and pretzels, maybe more, up there too. Help yourselves."

We hit the kitchen and discover that Tom's parents are already home. It's a good thing they didn't interrupt us at an inopportune time, even though we were just talking.

"Oh, Tom. I didn't know you had a gaggle of friends over. I suppose I can adjust the dinner plans if they're staying?"

"No mom, we just came up for a quick drink and snack. Probably be done with our discussion in a half hour or so. I don't think anybody was expecting to get real food."

We all agree with Tom that the snacks are fine.

After we've finished picking our snacks and drinks, we head back down to the family room.

"I guess she's seen you all here at one time or another, myself included, but does she have any idea what our relationship is?"

"Fuck no Avery. Shit, my parents don't even have a clue I'm gay. Not happening in this town. Not as long as the douchebag Watson brothers still live here."

"Watson brothers?"

"Watson family, really. OK, I'll pre-empt Pat's ear story. The Watsons are like 4 and 5 years older than us. Pretty close to my brothers' ages. I think Jeremy graduated the year Benny Watson should have graduated. Andrew Watson graduated a year earlier. At least I think he graduated. Apparently you've never heard the story Avery, but a few years back there was a kid, Jim, um... Can't think of his name..."

"Nelson."

"Jim Nelson, thanks David. Anyway this guy Jim, well, he was gay and didn't care if the world knew it. New to town, didn't get a chance to change his attitude until the Watsons changed it for him. Jim got beat pretty badly. Nothing permanent, except emotionally. His parents pressed charges, but our town leaders are so corrupt it's not funny, old man Watson allegedly paid off cops, the prosecutor, a judge, shit, probably half the town council. Nothing ever came of the beating. A few months later, the Nelsons moved away."

"So, if nothing ever came of it, how does anybody know the Watsons did it?"

"You apparently don't know the Watson family too well Avery. They fucking bragged about doing it. They said if they ever found any other gay boys in town, the beating would be so bad... Well, I think you can imagine. The fact that there are anti-LGBTQ posters in the police station, courthouse and all the churches doesn't help either. Just proves that if anything were to happen to a gay person in town, nothing would be done about it."

"Except a parade and statue in the perpetrator's honor."

"Yeah Pat. Wouldn't surprise me."

"Wow. I've seen some of the posters, kept me in the closet just on that alone. But this. Geez. I wish I was going away to college and not the community college over in Hillside."

"OK, something more upbeat now. Pat. We're all ears."

Groans all around.

"Thanks Tom. Well, there isn't much of a story. This was a few years ago. I think I was in 8th grade. As you all know, I get chased by both guys and girls. I don't think the kid was truly gay, or just had the hots for me, but he offered to blow me one day after school. I already knew I was gay by then, but even if I wasn't what 13 or 14 year-old turns down a blowjob no matter who offers it? Anyway, I brought him over to my house, laid down on my bed, and he started sucking. When I told him I was about to cum, instead of pulling away, this dipshit just turned his head. My cock lined up perfectly with the opening in his ear. Fortunately for him I didn't cum a whole lot back then, but it was enough to freak him out. He held onto his ear and ran out of the house like I had beaten him or something. Needless to say he hasn't said one word to me since."

We were all practically rolling around on the floor laughing halfway through the story. Not to mention for a minute or two after he finished.

"Oh God. That's rich."

"Yeah, I laughed longer and harder than you guys did Carl, when he took off running, holding his ear like it was falling off."

This kicked off another round of laughter. When it died down, Tom decided to adjourn the meeting.

"OK guys, if you want to, give Avery your numbers, he'll share his, and whatever you do behind closed doors is nobody's business. But feel free to share if any of you cums up someone's nose."

Once again, we're all laughing like raving lunatics. We trade numbers, even Carl gave me his, saying he'd probably only use it if he wanted some advice, my guess would be probably about my brother and him. After that is done, we all go our separate ways. I get home just in time for our dinner.

"Dang Avery. Why couldn't you stay out a little longer? I could have had your steak too."

"So there was a third pig on the ARK, huh?"

"Very funny."

"I guess you went somewhere after practice. How did that go?"

"Pretty good dad. There's a new kid, Ken Smithson, he looks like he's going to be pretty good. Not Connor Markham good, but hopefully it'll give us a chance to win more games. Two more tried out for pitchers, a freshman and a sophomore that wasn't on the team last year. They didn't look great, but we're so weak there, warm bodies would be worth it."

"That's good. Then what?"

"Then w... Oh, just went over to Tom's for a little while to hang out, play video games. You should have tried out for the team too Andre."

"No way. I'm no good running 90 feet at a time, anything less than a quarter mile and I'm the slowest there is. Longer, I'm one of the fastest. I'll stick to track, thank you, even though the team's so small we can't really compete head-to-head."

"Yeah, that's true. You have enough invitational trophies to justify that decision. I'm proud of you kid."

"Thanks Ave." (Rhymes with save, not have.)

After dinner is cleaned up, a family task, we all head to the living room to watch the Royals (Ick. Both Andre AND dad are Royals fans). Well, at least there aren't too many games to cause conflicts with my Cards. Although mom is in there for the company, knitting or crocheting, or whatevering her latest project. The Royals are playing in Detroit so it's an earlier game. 7:00 Eastern start but 6 here, and therefore an earlier finish. At least they kept it close, only lost by 1 run. After the game is over, Andre and I head to our respective rooms to do homework. About an hour later, I hear a quiet tap on my door.

"Come on in... Hey ARK, what's up?"

"I need to ask you something... But I need you to keep it between us. Mom and dad can't know, nobody in school. Nobody."

"Sounds serious. I guess as long you're not about to ask how to kill someone, I promise not to tell a soul."

Although with an opening like that, I'm thinking it's going to make any interaction with me by Carl, F5 level uncomfortable for him. Well, me too. I can't very well help my brother's boyfriend cheat on him.

"No, I'm not killing anyone. Um, this is hard, so if I struggle, just be patient and let me get through it. And don't get mad at me. OK?"

"OK."

"Remember on Friday I asked about asking somebody out?"

"Yes."

I considered a wise-ass answer like 'I'm not senile' but let it go. I've never seen him this serious.

"Um, and you asked about it being about a specific girl?"

"Yes."

"Well, it was specific, but not a girl."

He rushed that out of his mouth so fast I almost missed it.

"Ahhhh. That would explain your nervousness. And you've never been this nervous or serious with me, so I knew it had to be big. Continue."

"Well, you're probably guessing it's Carl. And you'd be right. But. Um. Damn."

"Let me try to help a little. I know you slept over his house Saturday night. I'm guessing something happened. Don't say anything yet. This something solidified your feelings about him and now asking him out is a distinct possibility."

"Uh huh. How'd you know?"

"Big brother is watching. No, seriously, when you said it was Carl, and you're 14, probably horny all the time. Friends, um, lend a helping hand sometimes. Not a very huge leap of logic. Besides, I don't think there's much else that would have made you so nervous AND swore me to secrecy."

"And you're not mad?"

"No. Why would I be mad?"

"Because I'm probably gay."

"No. Concerned, yes. Mad no. If things do move forward between you and him, you need to be real careful. There are plenty of people in this town who might want to make an example of one or two gay people."

"Yeah, I've seen the posters. But it can't really be that bad. Can it?"

"Think of the worst you can think it could be."

He hesitates, thinking for a few moments.

"OK."

"Now triple it."

"You mean, like dead?"

"Unfortunately, it could possibly be that bad. Not likely, but from what I've heard, anything is possible for a few select homophobes in town."

"Fuck. I was all ready to move ahead and hope Carl was gay too and the weekend wasn't just 'helping hands.' But now I'm just scared."

"Sorry, didn't mean to frighten you, but you have to know the risks, no matter how far-fetched and unlikely. Now I need you to swear to secrecy."

"I swear I won't tell anybody."

"That means nobody. You can't even go to the cemetery and tell Grandpa, someone could hear."

"Wow. Yeah. OK."

"I'm gay too. Mom and dad are going to have to rely on Ernie for grandkids. Natural grandkids anyway."

Ernie is our older brother. He's almost 21, lives on his own and has a very long-term girlfriend. By the way, he's Earnest Lawrence Kensington. Bet you can't guess what his nickname is.

"Really? But what about Stephanie?"

"That was to try and persuade myself into thinking I wasn't gay. We broke up because she wanted to get more physical and by then I knew I couldn't. So she started seeing someone else. I found out and set her free."

"Whoa. I guess I couldn't have gone to a better source."

"There may be a few in town, but yeah, I was a good choice."

"And that's another reason you're not mad, like apparently the rest of the town would be. What about mom and dad. Do they know?"

"No, and like you, I want to keep it that way for as long as I can."

"Wow. So if I ask Carl to be covert boyfriends, if he's anything like the rest of the town, he might end up hating me?"

"I honestly don't think you need to worry about that."

He thinks that one over for a while.

"Again, how do you know?"

"I can't say. Just know he won't start hating you."

"But he won't want to be boyfriends either."

"That's only something he could tell you. All I can say is he won't 'unfriend you' if he knows you're gay."

"OK. Thanks for talking with me, and being understanding."

"Well, we're together on the closet gay boy boat, we gotta stick together. And let me know how it goes after you approach Carl."

Andre says goodnight, gives me a hug and leaves my room. The hug would normally be a surprise, but after our talk, hardly unexpected. Of course, now I have a dilemma. I just met three gay boys, one of whom my brother likes and may very well become his boyfriend. If Carl says anything in the confidence of the 'club,' and it could have an impact on his relationship with Andre, do I break that confidence and tell Andre, or let my brother be led on by someone who is not being faithful? And here I thought knowing more gay boys would be a good thing. Well as Jim Steinman wrote for Meat Loaf - Two Out of Three Ain't Bad.
