Chapter 16: Summer of `24
Dear Journal,
Pour me up a double shot of whiskey! It's been a wild one for sure and the Summer of 2024 has been a hot one. I got a chance to practice some more with Coach Jay and get really toned up over the summer. We had a few more encounters with each other and I'm pretty sure, if I were a girl, I would have been pregnant by now...LOL! We had sex so many times after practice and gym sessions. "But Dad, I think I can handle it, it's not like I'm going off to kindergarten or this is my first day in high school." I said.
"I know, but this is different and navigating college is different from high school and you need to be prepared, especially since you are officially a D1 athlete." said Dad.
"Okay, well you don't have to stay long and Josh is going to be just a few miles over from me, he's flying out towards the end of the month." I said.
Dad doesn't know that Josh and I have already talked about getting an apartment together because staying with a total stranger is just creepy to me and Josh doesn't want to really room with anyone else but me. I'm sure we can't do that our first year, but we are definitely looking into it soon.
"Son, I know you're a very smart and fine young man, but this is college and every moment counts. I know you'll do good in your studies and excel as an athlete. Your mother and I are very proud of you. So we are going to make sure that we take care of your transition from Florida to California." Dad said.
"Dad, dad..I love you and thanks for everything you and mom do for me. I don't want you or mom to worry and know that I'm going to work hard at both school and track." I said.
I also wanted to take this moment and be transparent with my Dad and tell him about my sexuality but I just don't know if this is a great time to do it or not. When I think about it, I become so nervous and scared. I just don't know how he will accept me or what will he say, how will he look? So many thoughts run in my head, but I want to tell him soon.
"Oh I just remembered, I'm meeting one of my old colleagues from med school, we are talking about expanding the practice and adding another location in the city, I need to get going." Dad said.
"Wow Dad, that's awesome!" I said.
"We will talk about it later tonight for family dinner with everyone." Dad said.
"Hey Dad, I wanted to talk to you about..." I said
"We will discuss it tonight at dinner, see you Son and have a good day. Love you." Dad said.
That's just like Dad, always on the go and rushing out of a lot of my conversations. I'm never going to tell him about my feelings it seems. I definitely don't want to do it at dinner tonight and with me moving across the country, I doubt we'll even have time to talk about any of this.

I hopped in my truck and turned on the radio and headed down the highway to grab my boy Josh. I'm so glad he's joining me on this journey and things worked out for him, I don't know what I'd do if I were in California by myself. I wish I could bring Coach Jay with me and pack him in my suitcase. I rolled my eyes and turned up the music and we both sailed down the highway and got off the exit about 15 minutes later and found a good parking spot at the mall. Josh was hyped as usual and was ready to spend some of the money he made while working this summer. He found a job at the local burger place a few blocks from his neighborhood. I can't wait to get him out of here and in a different environment!
"Let's hit up the food court first and grab something to eat." I said.

We made our way into the mall and it was super packed for a Wednesday morning. I guess since school is out, people are bored and looking for things to do. The mall is definitely one of those gathering places for us teens to just escape from the parents for a while. We made our way into the food court and stopped at the pizzeria. I had a couple of slices of pepperoni and Josh ate a supreme pizza and soda.

Josh picked up my phone before I could grab it from him and started opening up my photo album. I didn't jump because I didn't want to panic or seem as though I were hiding something from him. I just trusted him and didn't think he would go to my photos. Josh opens my albums and flicks through them fast.
"WTF Alex!" Josh said.
If magic were real, I'd wish to disappear at this very moment because I just know Josh just saw something on my phone.

"I just realized we don't have any recent pictures together bro. I'm looking at your photos and don't see any of us." Josh said.

Josh hands me my phone back and I look at him and sigh because I thought he came across a couple of photos that Conner sent me a while back. I drove Josh to his house and dropped him off and I headed back home. I pulled into the driveway and entered the house and got upstairs to try on my new stuff. Dad was still away working and Mom was finishing up some court hearings and baby sister was in her room sleeping. I took this time to put on my new shorts and admire my body in the mirror. I gave my little sister the biggest hug and felt like a ton was lifted off my shoulders. We both went downstairs and started clearing the table and taking out food to cook for dinner. Mom texted us and said she was making pasta tonight! Mom got in first and came straight into the kitchen and we all helped her get the meal going. I was in charge of putting the salad together and Mom and Jasmine worked on the pasta. A few minutes later, Dad pulled into the garage and greeted us and came in and gave everyone a kiss and he was on bread duty. It felt so good to have my family in the kitchen and cooking together like the old days. I'm going to truly miss this and being with them. I'm appreciating moments like this because I know there will be some homesick days ahead.
