Dear Readers,
Cole is such a flirt, a tease, and yet, he seems to be really kind hearted. Because his character is always entertaining to be around, I wanted to get to know him a little better. As a result, the next few chapters will tell us what Cole's life was like before moving into the Community. I hope you enjoy the interlude. As always, I love hearing back from you guys.
Chapter One Hundred Twenty-One
Cole sat in the recliner and looked around the room. This had been his home the past two days, and by now he was familiar with everything in it. His awful experience remained like a bad dream in his memory. He leaned back in his chair and felt a pain spasm shoot through his body. He wondered if he would ever feel normal again.
Randy had stepped out to talk for a moment with Cole's nurse. He returned to the room just in time to see the look on his patient's face. "Everything alright over there?"
Cole gave a slight nod and said, "I'm okay"
Randy walked over to the boy. "Are you being truthful? You know I can order something for your pain."
"I know. It's gone now."
The door suddenly opened, and Dr. Bailey entered, followed by two other men. The third man closed the door behind him.
Dr. Bailey greeted his patient with a smile. "Good morning, Cole. I'm glad to see you out of the bed. How are you feeling this morning?"
The presence of the two strangers caused Cole to feel cautious and very uncomfortable. "I'm okay."
Dr. Bailey was quick to pick up on his patient's mood. He introduced the two men with him. "Cole, I'd like for you to meet Doctors Wilcox and Thomas."
The doctor stepped to one side, and the two new doctors took a step forward. The brown haired man said, "I'm Chad Thomas, Cole, and I'm happy to meet you." He extended a hand and watched the boy hesitate a few seconds before returning the handshake."
The Blond haired gentleman also reached his hand out. "I'm Tim Wilcox."
Cole felt his mouth get dry as fear took over his body. He pushed his body as far back against the chair as he could.
Randy was standing beside Cole's chair. "Cole, I think you should listen to what these men have to say." He placed a hand on Cole's shoulder.
Dr. Bailey introduced Randy to the newcomers. "Randy's a nurse, and he hasn't left his side since Cole was admitted in the ER. Randy, would you please see if you can find chairs for our visitors?"
While Randy was out looking for chairs, Dr. Bailey said, "First things first. Cole, you have my word when I say that you can trust these two. Saying this, Chad, why don't you go first?"
Kindness showed in Chad Thomas' eyes as he spoke to Cole, explaining who he was, and what he did. He explained about a community he had established. He explained his reason for the Community and what its purpose was.
"You see, Cole," Dr. Thomas continued, "my school years were miserable when I was growing up. Things couldn't have been better at home, but life away from home was hell. I hated school. Let me correct that. I didn't have a problem with school, but a lot of the students were jerks and assholes. In the locker room I was called every name possible, and all because I had more body hair than any of the other guys. While I was in college I met Tim, here, and we became good friends. We also realized that we'd had a lot of the same problems in school, and while earning our degrees, we came up with the idea for the Community. We wanted a place where guys could come and live without having to deal with ridicule about their bodies. Also, Tim and I are gay, which added to the problem. Tossing our thoughts and ideas back and forth, the Community eventually became real, making a safe place for guys like us to live."
As Cole listened to the doctor talk, he felt some of his fear melting away. His own hairy body had caused him grief after puberty arrived. When the man had finished talking, Cole's comment was, "It sounds like living in a city."
"I suppose the Community could be considered a city. It has just about everything a town does. There's a supermarket, gym, swimming pool and a bank. There's also a soda fountain, pharmacy and a cafeteria. And just like a city, it has rules as well."
"Sounds like it's really something," Cole said. "What rules?"
"Mainly respect of property, other students and staff members. Nothing too strict."
"It is a great place," the other doctor, Tim Wilcox, declared.
Chad Thomas looked directly into Cole's eyes and asked, "Would you like to live there?"
Cole looked surprised. "Me? Live there?"
Chad smiled. "Yes, live there. More students are coming, but they won't be there until the middle of June. If you decide to move in, you'll be the first one to arrive."
Cole seemed lost in thought and suddenly a look of anger appeared on his face. "My dad would never allow this."
"I think he would," Chad assured him.
"I don't think so," Cole disagreed.
"Cole, the Community has an excellent lawyer, and I've already talked with him about your situation. He's been in touch with the police officer that's handling your case. Your father has two choices. He can sign custody over to me, or he can spend some time in prison for his attack on you."
Tim added, "And if he refuses to sign, he'll spend time in prison and still lose custody over you."
Randy had returned with chairs and now the visitors were sitting in front of Cole. Randy and Dr, Bailey sat down on the bed and listened as the two doctors took turns explaining to Cole what his options were.
A few minutes later, they stood up, and Chad Thomas asked Dr. Bailey, "How much longer will Cole be in the hospital?"
"With his injuries, I think we can keep him at least two more days. He's still a ways from healing," Bailey told the man.
"I would like to tell you to take your time thinking about this, Cole, but it sounds as if we only have two days to set things into motion. If you decide to accept our invitation, there are lots of steps to be taken first."
Cole looked in Randy's direction. By now, the guy had not only been his nurse, but he had become his friend as well.
"I think you should do it," Randy encouraged.
Cole said, "I don't have to think about it. I've got nothing left here. My mom's dead, and my dad might as well be. I think I'd like to live in your Community, Dr. Thomas." Saying the words brought immediate relief to Cole.
Chad smiled. "I'm happy to hear that." He turned to the boy's doctor and said, "Chris, I'll set the ball rolling. I'll give Brad Stevens your number. He's the Community's lawyer. He will know what legal steps need to be taken." He turned back to Cole and said with a smile, "I'm so happy you've decided to move in. I'll be in touch. If Brad wants to see you, just know, he can be trusted. However, he won't have any contact with you without going through Dr. Bailey."
When Cole and Randy were alone in the room, Randy said, "I think this new life is going to make you very happy."
"I think so, too." Cole shrugged. "Hell, at its worst, it'll be better than living with my dad."
"I think Dr. Thomas is doing a good thing. I was lucky, in that I haven't had any problem, family or friend wise, because I'm gay. I do know there are lots of guys who do have problems. I'm so fucking sorry you've had to go through the shit you have."
Cole grinned. "Language, please."
"As if it offends you," the nurse grinned back.
While they were talking, their lunch arrived.
"What's today's specialty?" Cole asked lifting the lid.
"It's the hospital's version of Chicken Fried Steak. I ordered the same thing."
They talked about the possible changes coming to Cole as they ate their meal. When it was finished, Cole announced he was tired.
"I'll take the trays down and let you take a nap. I won't be gone long," Randy assured when he saw a look of panic in Cole's eyes. "Don't worry, everyone in the hospital it making sure that you're safe."
Cole watched his new friend leave the room, and he rolled over on his side and closed his eyes. The morning's events had been stressful, and now he welcomed a dark dreamless sleep.
However, he was wrong. His dreams were of a new life and what it might be like. As he dreamed, his body relaxed, and his nap turned into a deep sleep. When he woke up an hour later, he discovered Randy leaning back in the recliner. "Are you sleeping on the job?" he called out.
"Just resting my eye lids," Randy quickly assured him. "You took a nice nap."
"I did, didn't I?" Cole raised his arms and stretched his body. "Shit," he said quickly lowering them. The action had sent a wave of pain through his body.
"You need something?" Randy was by his side at once.
Cole smiled. "I do. I need my friend to sit here." He gave his bed a pat. "Let's talk."
"What about?" Randy asked doing as his patient asked.
"Just anything. Everything."
Cole suddenly found himself looking forward to his new life, and he wanted to discuss the possibilities with Randy. Although he didn't know it now, Cole was going to quickly adapt to his new way of life, and enjoy it to the fullest.
